Jaga Jaga
« #224 on: March 30, 2007, 09:06 PM »

The rains are coming gradually and things are not getting any better. Electricity jaga jaga, electricity jaga jaga, mtn jaga jaga, glo send sms and take money but no delivery.  The weather this days is very conducive for strolling but the atmosphere is a bit unpredicatable. Some road construction work is being carried out across major roads in Port Harcourt but will they last?

April 1
« #225 on: April 02, 2007, 05:59 AM »

It was Palm Sunday the other day and the heavens opened up in PH. Even with all the cold and rain; ma people still went processing. There was no NEPA anyway so me stayed at home. At about 5pm in the evening we heard sporadic and heavy moving gunfire on campus which is supposed to be closed down. Apparently some students are not in a hurry to go home; some cultists gunned down a final year mechanical engineering student in the cool of the evening. Its a muslim holiday today and still there is no light but the weather is still very cold.

An odd day
« #226 on: April 04, 2007, 01:52 PM »

Since the brutal murder of the other day; a lot of students have gone home and the university is like a ghost town. There are still a handful of students trying to finish up with their registration. Everywhere is a bit dull and today i did not feel like working. The rains are not helping matters, thank God there is NEPA.

Banking in Festive Seasons
« #227 on: April 06, 2007, 05:50 AM »

Going to the bank during any festive period is a very painful experience. For the past 2 days "the server has been down" at all branches in UBA Port Harcourt. This started Tuesday afternoon and ended on Wednesday. Thursday morning and the banking halls are so full with people trying to get money for the easter; alas there is no money to pay. What is the essence of having N25b and yet can't pay your clients money when they demand it? People have to spend nothing less than 6 - 7 hours hustling for their own cash. There was no work today as it appeared even the NEPA guys were in the banking hall.

Holliday & Boredom
« #228 on: April 07, 2007, 08:45 PM »

Today is good friday and before long the heavens were opened. All of a sudden everywhere was dark with heavy clouds and NEPA promptly took an excuse. Went back to bed hoping by the time I awoke things will be a bit clearer but my friend said that the Ore portion of the Lagos - Benin express road was so bad that buses stayed there for 5 hours. I will remember this day as very boring and cold.

Easter Sunday
« #229 on: April 09, 2007, 05:11 AM »

Expected the church service to be very emotional and dramatic not long. The girl that sat next to me did not have a bible and was trying to borrow one from the person in front so that "we can use it together". This did not augur well with me as I will have preferred to be alone but she kept looking into my sermon notes for spelling and this put me in a bad mood. Our country Nigeria will be better off if people practiced what the bible says especially those that shout "Jesus I Love You" inside church. Elections are around the corner.

Off Dull
« #230 on: April 10, 2007, 03:37 PM »

Holiday is over and we are at work today. Every where is quiet as the count down to politics has begun. Felt a bit sick earlier but the rains fell and the winds blew and I felt better. Had this earthquake of a toothache which also started giving me a headache. Today is looking dull; wonder if I'll make it to rehearsals in the evening. Bought Tuesday guardian for N200 instead of the advertised price of N150. Thinking of my future lady lately and have committed her into God's hand only let her not go there very soon.

Election Fever
« #231 on: April 11, 2007, 05:14 PM »

Different fever na im dey, jaundice fever, yellow fever, malaria fever, hay fever, election fever na im dey bring the mata na we dey.  Out of the blues, early in the evening we got wind that there is a public holiday tomorrow thursday and friday.  government magic is at work. I'll just relax and do some academic exercises; perhaps watch a DVD. The weather is so beautiful, am tempted to take a stroll and just chill.

GSM Confusion
« #232 on: April 13, 2007, 06:01 AM »

I have been testing the GSM facilities here at the university & wish to state my findings here. CELTEL; expensive, mast runs out of diesel at least once in 3 weeks mostly on weekends, good service of quality at least they do what they say. GLO; excellent voice quality, good products but if you call outside the network you could loose all you credit especially when you call MTN. Text sent to other networks sometimes behave like a virus. MTN; cheap and very available, poor voice quality, some advertised products are not working.

Election Update
« #233 on: April 16, 2007, 12:30 AM »

What can I say? A lot of people were disenfranchised long ago because where they registered is different from where they reside. In this category must include at least 90% of students in Nigerian universities. The fear of violence kept many people indoors; P D P is having it big. This one is worse than a Tsunami, am still telling myself that this "demoncracy" is far better than military rule but its unfair.

Port Harcourt Rains
« #234 on: April 18, 2007, 04:59 AM »

Port Harcourt rains when in season never really stops. Its a little more than a perpetual drizzle with dark clouds in the sky; very unpredictable. Sometimes the dark clouds heavy with moisture unleash a short burst of torrential downpour causing the roads to be in a very sorry state. There is an increase in the number of malaria cases and power outtages at the initial onset but in time normalcy is restored.

GSM further Tests
« #235 on: April 19, 2007, 05:50 AM »

After activating my celtel family & friends and making about an hour long call; Its now becoming clearer that there is little difference between them and MTN in terms of voice clarity billing system and promos only that MTN with its large client base has the edge and is also cheaper because of that. GLO on the other hand is still the best rural network with a better voice quality than the others. No comments yet on 3G. MTN gives 3 Nos on family & friends at 50% reduction, GLO gives 4 at 40% reduction while CELTEL for now gives 5 at 50% reduction.

Fuuny Weather
« #236 on: April 21, 2007, 02:42 AM »

I don't know if its a result of the climate change I hear about on BBC but the weather this days is very hot and today it was behaving as if we were in harmattan. There will be yet another public holiday tomorrow and my body is very happy because it needs rest and a break from the routine. Went around the Port Harcourt metropolis for a drive and the whole place was scanty with most cars trying to get out causing traffic jams on the lanes leading out. I have decided not to comment on the ongoing elections because its all too predictable.

The Aftermath
« #237 on: April 25, 2007, 06:29 AM »

When I look at the politics being played in my church then really OBJ has not fared badly. Infact I was not surprised to see a newspaper report online that Mbang defends Iwu. These Politicians and Pastors are one and the same; you don't have to look far before you find out whose interests most of them are serving. Suddenly, we are in darkness as NEPA is trying to recreate another environment. Uniport students who are tired of staying at home are already coming to school after spreading rumors that the ASUU strike has been called off which they now want everyone to believe. See as Nigerians engage in self delusion to their own harm. The University authorities have postponed the resumption date but some people don't want to know.

Mixed Box
« #238 on: April 26, 2007, 06:23 AM »

Yesterday was quite cold and not much was accomplished in the office due to the absence of NEPA. The weather was dull and very inviting but my body system did not really want to go anywhere. Did eventually subscribe to driving to the shopping center to take a shave, the area was largely empty. MTN has an issue with loading of credit today and a lot of people are complaining. There is a massive investment in the provision of student accomodation in the outskirts of the university and infact a hotel it appears is being built by a private investor.

Unusual Disappointment
« #239 on: April 27, 2007, 06:04 AM »

Work this days has been very demoralizing. The website that am maintaining has been under a massive renovation for the past 2 days so updating it and querying its database seems to take forever. The electricity situation has been a stumbling block for as soon as the PC has come on and the site manages to come up with the results then there is an outtage and then we work until our big UPS runs down. Its really been a disappointing challenge. Little by little, the students are coming back to come and chill in the university; hoping and waiting for the resumption of major academic activities.

Unusual Outting
« #240 on: April 28, 2007, 09:32 PM »

I don't normally attend weddings because I feel its a waste of human resources. But then I decided that instead of staying at home in the name of PDP i will be better off going for a muslim wedding ceremony within the university campus for a change. It was quite different from what we are used to in the churches but what really thripped me was when the absence of "you may kiss the bride" drama. The Iman's sermon was quite educative as he condemned the PDP "show of shame" amongst other things.

Monday Morning
« #241 on: April 30, 2007, 10:29 AM »

Quite a long weekend but it was eventful. Church service on sunday was so much fun though it was quite hot. Infact I would have fainted because of the amount of water I lost through sweating. It eventually rained heavily in the evening so staying indoors was the only option. Had a fruitless debate/gist in the office about some culture stuff; quite interesting way of catching up on people's views. Tomorrow is a holiday so I guess work will be light today and the banking halls full.

Is it possible?
« #242 on: May 02, 2007, 05:08 PM »

Its funny how I talk this days about human interactions. The day looked quite congested at the beginning, the sun was shinning bright so I did some laundry and also some electrical installations. Went visiting and was quite amazed at the differences in behavioural patterns that exists at various locations.  A lot of young ladies behave one way in church and another way in their houses. Many of them arrange indomie 24/7 with Mr. Biggs; its funny though how the trend is more in the pentecostal churches. Is it my destiny to see her in the roman catholic church?

Cheap Points
« #243 on: May 04, 2007, 04:52 PM »

How will you define undue advantage? My best friend came to see me in the office and asked to browse. The atmosphere in the office was a bit tense so I told him to be quick about it as I reluctantly gave him a staff system.  After a while my colleague came and was like he could continue browsing as she wanted to do other things but i insisted he quit the system. Not long after then he begged that he really needed to check some other things on the internet so I gave him another system from the pool and then the drama started. One girl just came and before long my friend forgot he had some important thing to browse online and started checking her email; soon after she was browsing full time. I was so furious; I started smiling because this is the last time I will give him a system. I hate it when "ugilities" score cheap points from a guy who is actually having free lunch at the expense of another guy.

JAMB MADNESS
« #244 on: May 07, 2007, 03:59 AM »

The centralization of examination into public nigerian universities by the federal government is an evil that I can't understand. Going out of my house this morning to the cyber cafe, the entire atmosphere was supercharged with people running up and down. A system where majority of the invigilators have decided to increase their wealth through examination fraud; you wonder what is all the shout of electoral malpractice against PDP. The least invigilator is supposed to be paid N10000 but cases abound where at the end other names who did not work are substituted for those that did the job so those in the halls make "hay while the sun shines". Doing the right thing in this country is becoming increasingly difficult due to bad leadership but we must continue to hope.

« #245 on: May 08, 2007, 10:12 AM »

Today was quite somehow. There was a general staff meeting scheduled for 1pm so its like we were waiting from 9am till then. Most people came early and the cleaners even swept the office after like three days or so. I dressed corporately and everyone was just teasing. Everyone was in a relaxed state and the meeting went well thereafter the office closed and am back at home with a place of garri which almost killed me. Watched a bit of music videos and then went strolling with some friends.

Business Trip
« #246 on: May 10, 2007, 10:32 AM »

It was imperative that I take the day off from work to go renew my driving license amongst other things. As God will have it, there was no electricity in the campus where my office was so most of the staff where outside gisting under trees. I left for the licensing office after filling my petrol tank up by 12.30pm. From there to Federal Housing Estate, Agip to make preliminary business contacts.  We then went to see a friend on Ada George Rd and then proceeded for a business dinner by 6.15pm at a very beautiful place called Margaret's Restaurant on Trans Amadi rd. The food was nice and the atmosphere simply excellent. Took a social drive to Abuloma by which time it was about 7.30pm; returned back to the University by 9pm and began some installation work which ended by 11pm. Thank God for friends, strength, health and you my journal readers.

Dumping Ground
« #247 on: May 12, 2007, 06:15 AM »

The other day my sister bought a foreign cereal from a popular departmental shop. When I compared the naira value with the advertised british pounds value it was quite good which caused me to wonder. It was later that I checked the expiry date and found out that it was just a matter of 7 days. Yesterday I bought hobnobs from another store and also checked the expiry date which revealed that it will expire within 3 weeks. Our country has become a dumping ground for soon to be expired food from the UK which as a result of the low travelling cost to London yet the NAFDAC woman will be making noise.

The Problem with Nigeria
« #248 on: May 14, 2007, 04:00 PM »

Finally I hit the very crux of matter. The problem of Nigeria is not religion, tribe or gender; its something linked to poverty but closer to a mental condition. To cut short the long story, greed is our problem as a nation. How can you explain the forming of activity by politicians two weeks to their departure - awarding billions of contracts and engaging in many infrastructural development projects which are very well going to be abandoned. This country great o.

Somehow
« #249 on: May 15, 2007, 04:14 PM »

Long fuel queues have started appearing in Port Harcourt indicating that such stations are selling at N65 a litre. Most of the others are selling at N75 and it appears its going to go up. The poor state of electricity in the campus today did not allow me to do any meaningful work. Spent most of the time gisting away and then got to meet an FLP marketer.  The weather is very conducive for strolling but i have to reach church this evening for choir rehearsals.

Wonders of Nature
« #250 on: May 18, 2007, 12:35 AM »

I noticed this particular bird that happened to look into the side mirror of our neighbours car. It kept coming back to perch on the side mirror and sometimes fly stationary perking at the image of itself on the side mirror. This has been happening for the past 2 days but by today it has brought another friendly bird so you need to see the 2 struggling to get a view of the small side mirror of the car.

Different Strokes
« #251 on: May 21, 2007, 10:28 AM »

Came to the office and was greeted by no light. Talked with my colleagues on the interview of OBJ the previous night. He made quite a bit of sense although his remarks about ASUU shows that we are in for a long fight. On the whole, it does appear that he had great plans but could not conclude them. I hope the incoming administration will do well to utilize the options he has left. God Bless Nigeria.

Rainy Season Intro
« #252 on: May 22, 2007, 10:58 AM »

We are slowly entering the rainy season and especially the Port Harcourt rains demonstrating their characters. It starts with strong winds then a heavy downpour and then eases into a never ending drizzle. Having become used to it, the people move about with umbrella's and appropriate dressing. It appears there is some relationship between this weather and the number of people falling sick especially at the initial stage.

Anger
« #253 on: May 23, 2007, 10:56 AM »

Its been a while since I became angry. Some people are just mean. The system too does not help matters. What is the difference between being malicious and callous? I'D have to check out the dictionary meaning of both words but I find that both together with serious bad belle exist in one particular large soul. The girl has the nerve; I'll teach her one of the life lessons of Father Abraham. No need to be nice; it just does not work.

Signs of the Time
« #254 on: May 24, 2007, 08:25 PM »

Can you imagine some people have started rejecting the old N5, N10 and N20 notes? This is very absurd. There were unconfirmed reports of shooting at various locations in Port Harcourt. I wonder if this is not connected with the May 29 handover date. There is talk of strike here and there but am really not bothered. The scarcity of petrol has caused an increase in transport fares and some civil servants are responding by coming to work 3 days out of 5. The university campus will be reopened tomorrow so we are getting ready to receive the students.

Sunny Days
« #255 on: May 26, 2007, 02:49 PM »

The past two days have been very sunny in Port Harcourt, I am a little afraid because of the type of rains that normally occur afterwards. Thank God, I did some laundry because we were asked to come to the office on saturday to make up for the monday - tuesday holiday abi is it strike. I hear petrol has gone up to N150 a litre. This our country is really an interesting place because nobody is even raising an eyebrow.
