Its no more news now that the petrol prices have been officially increased to N75. What a beffiting gift from our beloved president? The challenges ahead for the incoming administration are so many. Did not leave the university campus this weekend. Trying to refocus myself to take advantage of opportunities that surround me. Lets pray for the peace of Nigeria.

Today was fast turning out to be a boring day when compared with the weekend activities. Did i tell you guys I went for private party? It was a very interesting experience especially the cool evening breeze. Something came up and I had to drive to town. The roads were largely empty and they were petrol queues everywhere for the price of N130 per litre. Stopped by at everyday emporium, Rumuola Junction to pick one or two items. This is the best place to shop in the entire Port Harcourt as its big, air conditioned and well arranged. Saw a Nigerian Actor Hilda Dokubo enjoying the services too.

Aftermath

The handover has come and gone and things seem to be getting back to normal. The petrol prices in Port Harcourt are still on the high side with long queues. The DPR officials are going round to enforce the N75 a litre. The weather is most times sunny with the rains appearing either late at night or early in the morning. Its been a while since I went to church which is well inside the hustle and bustle of the metropolis; hopefully I should be there this weekend.

While driving to Church for stage rehearsals, i noticed that the roads were unusually empty; infact it was only one petrol station I saw selling at N130. On the following day I had to go to Isiokpo and as far as Elele to purchase petrol at N120 because it was so scarce in Port Harcourt metropolis that people were in long lines for N180. Took some jerry cans, infact jerry can sales is big business in Elele. There was no public electricity most of the day but the weather was cool which helped in no small measure.

Hot Mess

Before I knew what was happening; it was like I was perceiving something. Was it the beans I ate or the cough medicine I had been consuming previously? The bottom line is that my colleagues get confused when an easterly wind blows. What a chemical weapon I have built. Went to church for rehearsals and decided to try it out; it was no use as the anti defense systems were too strong. After a series of releases, I gave up the exercises and concentrated on singing my lines. Isn't this world a funny place?

Yes, I have been taking the back bench for some time; No be small thing o. Had some things to take care of out of the office. Port Harcourt metropolis is not growing as fast as the population. The banks are crowded, the roads are crowded, even inside the church toilet na traffic jam dey there especially on cold days. Petrol is still dancing between N100 and N150. The poor man is suffering and smilling.

This weekend has been very interesting. Port Harcourt was held to a standstill as Asari Dokubo arrived; his boys ensured that everyone was turned into a spectator. They blocked a number of roads causing traffic hold up. I got Petrol for N120 and considered myself quite lucky. Feeling very funny; might have to take some malaria treatment. The weather has been very erratic, mostly sunny in the day time with heavy rains towards the evenings.

Malaria
« #263 on: June 19, 2007, 03:22 AM » |

The time is 3.15 in the morning and I am unable to sleep. It occured yet again to me that I might be having malaria after like 7 days of some confusion. Am not one that dreams in the night (lol) but over the past few days I have been sleeping like a fool and having nightmares. Started the 5 day treatment today and felt very terrible. The roads in Port Harcourt are empty and trekking in all directions is quite normal. The few stations that had petrol sold for N130 a litre and am considering packing my car till this nonsense stops.

At last the "Mother of All Strikes" has begun; I mean Enough is Enough. The same old politicians have started squandering our resources, starting from where OBJ left off. The worse part is the gullibility of the common man even those that say they are educated. O the wickedness of a weak mind. The looters have increased their salary by 150% and yet say the common man should be deprived of his 15% and still bear with the new government. By the way there is nothing new about this government because their modus operandi is still the same. Illegality is the other of the day and the people continue to suffer and smile.

DAY 2
« #265 on: June 22, 2007, 05:49 AM » |

The streets are largely empty and it appears most parts of the country have shut down as the people are indoors. A friend of mine bought petrol for N75 in Lagos but here in Port Harcourt its going for N150 at the pump. All my friends in the banking sector went to work and indeed most small and medium private companies have insisted that their staff come to work even though there has been a remarkable increase in transportation fares.

NLC WHY?
« #266 on: June 25, 2007, 03:09 AM » |
|
When I woke up on Sunday morning, I discovered that the NLC strike had been called off. They claim that there is an agreement in writing by the president not to increase prices in the next one year. A lot of people are disappointed and sorry for embarking on the strike as they feel labour should have counted all the costs. Personally, its irrelevant and that is because we did not observe any effects of strike here in Port Harcourt.

Its raining, its pouring, the old man is snoring and the price of petrol is slowly getting back to N70 per litre. A friend of mine bought for N120 from the independent marketers and did not find it funny. There has been some reassignment of desks in the office and by July I will be operating mainly from downstairs. I love office politics because of its simplicity. Just when we thought we had it all worked out then GBOSA, like a shot from the sky came we down to earth and boy was it wonderful

Little by little, the pressure was building and instead of letting the steam out I was trying so hard to forget it. How monkey go dey work? Baboon chop steady come dey mess pollute everywhere. I will have to start speaking up and out so that an explosion does not happen. Petrol is still N100 a litre and mediocrity abounds. My mom once said that poor people spend most of their cash on clothes and then have a poor quality diet.

The last two days has been very hot and sunny. Getting petrol has been uppermost on my mind. Few petrol stations are selling N70 with extreme long queues while those going for N100 have no queue. A rumour of impending examinations at the university has sent a lot of people to the library and classrooms. Could not make it to choir rehearsals today as I really needed to rest. I hear that long queues also exist in Benin and Warri.

The University campus is very full today; no thanks to the termination of the nationwide strike by university lecturers. So many people everywhere. Went to the Bank today and did not bother to enter because from far I could see the crowd. There was this group around the ATM machine and a queue to enter true the security door. The weather has been very fair and my mood has been cool.

Did I tell you guys am getting really pissed off in the office? It appear that while some people are working; others are just chopping. There is one lady whose only work i see is to collect money for staff & their spouses who have either given birth or whose children are about getting married. I call her Mrs. Welfare; at least she comes to work everyday. There is another one I call Mrs. Sleep and yet the worse I have christened the Bishop of Demons; all she does is to come once a week and stay on a PC speaking in tongues. A lot of lousy people who laugh irresponsibly and then you start wondering.

When last did you encounter a time waster? I refer to particular human beings who waste your time whenever you meet. Last Sunday afternoon I happened to come across one of my acquaintances who wanted to "JOB" me. He tried to sell me a Car deck which was not original; now I knew I should have put my foot down and insisted in the negative but then the deal looked cool. He claimed to be better than my consultant so I let him and then it was "Lights Out" The guy almost permanently ruined my car audio system and in the end I had to run back to my good old consultant who then replaced most of the fuses that had been burned up in the process. This whole ordeal lasted for more than 7 hours.

I still am of the opinion that for the majority, there is no relationship between attendance of all/most weekly church activities and "decent human behavior". I still don't know how they arrived at such a conclusion that consistency in church attendance, membership of service units e.g prayer chain, choir e.t.c. is synonymous with increased maturity of the saints. Most ladies say they want to marry a God fearing man, what they mean by that really; I don't know.

There was quite a heavy downpour here in the university mid morning which seems to be localized. I am learning new things every day; today I have learned to always give people the benefit of doubt and not judge them. In every way, at all times, I'll do the right thing in view of my understanding at that particular time. This life is an interesting classroom and I love learning

Malaria

Been out of action for some time due to malaria, the treatment with artequin which I understand is slow acting. The campus has been quite after the end of the first semester examinations. Work has been very somehow but I will not be moved. Church people have equally been a little demanding and the gsm networks are in a world of their own.

How my car key got broken inside the lock on the drivers door is not more alarming than the discovery of the broken spare inside a bag in my room. In either case, i had to give the car another round of attention; no wonder a friend of mine called it my wife. The weather was very unpredictable and by evening it was cold and the rains were adequate.

There is a problem with the reward service in Nigeria. Mediocrity of an excellent value attracts the highest form of compensation. Was it the bible that asked us not to be too good? A new colleague of mine who has not been here for 3 months has already taking casual leave amounting to 2 weeks and yet they thought to work me to death but I will not agree. My mom says the more work you do the more you will be giving with no added increase in finances. Looking forward to this weekend; suddenly all my waka waka done dey tidy.

Not Again

Talk of the devil; petrol is suddenly missing overnight in Port Harcourt. My mom had to queue up to buy at N90 up from N70. What is this country turning to? The roads are ever so bad and the season is not helping matters. The government by the way I don't know what they are doing.

Making calls on the 0702 platform using the HUAWEI handset is not a pleasant experience. The handset gets very hot as the calls exceed 5 mins that is if it manages to go as there seems to be an interface problem with other networks. I have decided to put it permanently off until such a time that there is a tremendous improvement in the network. I have always postulated that most of the companies that make noise by way of adverts have very little to offer and STARCOMMS has proved me right.

Decided to leave the cyber cafe and go to the barbers quite early. The time was about 8.15am and there was already a queue there. There were barbers saloons around the cyber cafe but I choose to pay N60 to and from this particular one because of his excellence and really I have never been disappointed. While having a haircut which costs N100 a guy entered in accompanied by a lady which is unusual. I wonder if the guy has an inferiority complex or perhaps the lady feels insecure. On my way home another funny sight, a man in his late 60s on his way home in his car parks and decides to urinate on the roadside. I started wondering because his house was not very far from there.

There was a terrible fight this weekend between the two seasons with the rainy one prevailing. One minute sun will be shinning and all your laundry will be out drying then the next minute its like in the days of Noe. Visiting was very tasking and the cold was something else. Some gunshots and the sound of a very loud explosion Sunday night advised me to cancel all evening engagements beyond 8pm - them say na dynamite but the sound odi very loud.

The level of gun running in Port Harcourt is at an all time high. It has never been this bad before. From the normal hotspots e.g Borikiri, Abonnema wharf to Mile 1 fllyover area with the headquarters at Education Bus Stop it is now spreading to Transamadi - Artilery area, Government House Junction, Wimpey junction - Ikwerre road axis, Rumola flyover then Ozuoba junction with two communiites; Ogbakiri and Ozuoba having some cult war. How did it get to this?

Self medication and the menance of fake drugs landed me in the University Teaching Hospital. Thank God that I have some doctor friends who were assisted by NEPA. Port Harcourt is now under curfew; for the avoidance of doubt there is no movement between 7pm and 6am. The rainy season seems to be acting as a natural hindrance to the violence of the criminal gangs.

Some people have been shouting at the top of their voices in unknown tongues since midnight and some dogs decided to join the prayer meeting. Port Harcourt is gradually returning to normal. The curfew has ceased to be of any effect in the University campus; so human and vehicular traffic has been on the increase. Church activities has been reduced to weekends only; hallelujah.

Was woken up today by the voice of a MAD man. How else can you explain the behavior of a human who comes with a Public Address system and starts to preach at the junction by 5am all in the name of evangelism. It took the intervention of my neighbor a reverend father who declared that he has a "right to sleep" to drive away the wicked fellow.

AIDS is killing Africa; so says the late abami eda. The rate at which married men are getting it from outside and dishing it out inside is unbelievably increasingly efficient but that its a story for another day. Its no more news now that there are no good roads in Nigeria and we have a government in power. Good girls are still in short supply and there are many, many.

Passover

Passover, Does that strike you? Some of us have become so accustomed to eating on the move; we find it hard to sit down and eat our meals even in our houses. Congratulations Nigeria as we mark yet another independence anniversary. There is some feeling of national pride in the air and really anything that will distract us from our sorrows is welcome. At least there won't be a petrol increase this time I hope.
