« #32 on: June 20, 2006, 07:45 PM »

Perhaps it was the rainbow or can it be the music? The evening was turning out fine, my colleague eEe! was doing DJ work and his combination was thrilling me. Its one of my dream to start a campus radio cause i know we have at least 2 good deejays around.

At the sight of the clouds today people started running. They were black with fury, angry at being restrained from unleashing their moisture.  No need to drive to the cyber cafe cause the traffic jam afterwards could be very tedious. So with my umbrella and special rubber slippers, I carried my body inside a sweater in the desired direction. No sooner had I reached that the rains started and as usual NEPA briefly switched off to access if it will be a heavy rain without wind and lightning before coming back. The smell of the rain again makes me happy and I start off the music with some saxophone tracks from fela then to mike aremu and lagbaja. Its going to be a swell day.

How things went from bad to worse within 30 minutes; I really can't tell. Yahoo messenger suddenly stopped working, then the browser started getting slower. As if that was enough all the normal diagnostic tests pointed to the fact that we should browsing very fast. In the ensuing confusion we had to shut down the cyber cafe to trace the fault. I was not prepared for this but its the work.  We lost a total of 6 hours not to talk of the abuses we received from aggrieved customers.

Its been a hectic day. Yahoo website administrators and the weather really dealt harshly with us. I tried to reactivate my msn messenger but I could not because I lost the password and my alternate email is in yahoo which cannot open. You needed to see the commotion caused by the yahoo problem. Babes were just calling to cancel their yahoo lunch chat appointments with their oil company bobos.

Last night was so cold, i did not sleep well. Its morning and the sun is smiling sweetly; my spirit is upbeat but my body needs a break. I have been running full steam in the last 10 days or so. Right now am feeling lazy and my nose is running but am already in the cyber cafe. I don't expect to spend more than 3 hours here today in all.

Friends and Pretenders
« #37 on: June 22, 2006, 09:47 AM »

I heard a pastor once say no permanent friends and no permanent enemies; only permanent interests. Isn't that revealing? I think it is sad. Indeed the love of materialism and personal comfort in our times is leading to selfish tendencies and weak relationships. Inspite of the travails of Major Hamza Mustapha, Fanny Amum says he won't deny their friendship. We should be careful about the people we call friends and brethren.

Today is Thursday, midweek service at my church and already I have received a flash from one girl. She expects me to call back but things have changed. I have made up my mind not to drive to church again because these "sicksters" will want a ride. Funnily enough when am on foot I don't see most of them especially the "ladies".

Different Strokes
« #38 on: June 22, 2006, 06:51 PM »

I went to pick my director from the airport and she was so glad to be back home. She said that the Local wing of the Abuja airport was busier than that of the Port Harcourt airport but that the latter was bigger and more organized than the former.

She attended a conference at The Women Center in the FCT and remarked at the regularity of darkness in the territory. One of the participants who came from Ghana said when she lived in Nigeria 15 years ago it was Never Expect Power Anytime and now with Please Hold Candle Near its even worse. Indeed we that live in the University of Port Harcourt and the adjourning villages of Aluu and Omuoko are really enjoying.

Yesterday our president said he had done a lot. This must be a wonderful statement.

Body No Be Khaki
« #39 on: June 23, 2006, 10:32 AM »

Yesterday was really something else. I was tired and running a slight temperature so straight to the restaurant not the usual one - a plate of garri and native soup (N200); i don't think I got value for my money but oh well. I then went home to sleep; quite some time since I enjoyed a good siesta.  But before then I was chatting a friend in front of the banking area and could not help but wonder at the emptiness of the school. Anyway I will not overstretch myself much especially when there are other people who are supposed to be participating in the work.

Mood Swings
« #40 on: June 23, 2006, 02:42 PM »

The sun has been shouting since morning and In The Cyber Cafe, I have been in a very unpredictable condition. Just when I wanted to stick to my schedule, there is an electricity outage so going home is going to be boring.

Funnily enough a colleague of mine who is now at University of Jos stopped by for a visit. She said that the girls at UniJos were prettier (i think she was serious) and the cost of living there cheaper N40k for a self contained as against N70k here. As she was about leaving another set of friends came too and it appears my weekend is going to be swell; the only problem being the money aspects cause N1k2 had just walked away. Its okay, don't get to entertain 3 beauties all the time. Another has just walked in and I decide to go home before things get mixed up abi them blow whistle. I need to rest so as to have enough strength and purpose later in the day during choir rehearsals.

It was about 5 minutes after 1600 hours that we had a power outage from the our generator. There was a little commotion as some clients demanded a refund. The atmosphere was charged and I actually did loose my cool. The Cyber Cafe was shut down and my weekend which looked promising earlier started taking a dive.

In The Cyber cafe
« #42 on: June 28, 2006, 03:40 PM »

Saturday morning and the Sun is shinning brightly as usual. Did some laundry and went for a shave. There are very few skilled barbers in and around the university and the work was poorly done. The worse part was that there was no public electricity. It was rather hot and I did not intend to reach the cyber cafe today.

About 3.30pm the weather started changing and before you could say jack robinson - a mixture of wind and lightning started landing on the university. It struck the outdoor TV antenna in the house which caused some of the channels to be very clear and others to be horrible. I got a call from the cyber cafe saying that it appeared the equipment had been hit by the lightning too. My boss was around to check things so my presence was not needed. I was not feeling too well so I spent most of the time resting and watching the world cup.

« #43 on: June 28, 2006, 04:28 PM »

Its 5.23am sunday morning and the rain is pouring with strong winds. Did not plan to go for church meeting and the weather made my sleep even very nice. Had an early breakfast of bread, fried eggs and cornflakes then went to see a friend. The weather was so dull, i had to drive to the place. There was a power outtage and we went back to my parents house for the sunday usual (PS2 gaming and checking the Tuesday/Thursday guardian newspapers)

My uncle came in from Lagos, he drove in a Peugeot 406 and was at UNIPORT by 12 noon using about 6 hours. It appears I will be having the entire parlour to myself this night and so I prepare to read most of the time. I end up watching CNN and e.tv, a film "jackal" caught my attention and it was TV watching till about 4.45am; don't blame me, am not used to sleeping on the couch.

Oh my God it's Monday but the cyber cafe is not open. My boss is running around to get the equipment replaced. The weather condition on Saturday caused a power surge which blew the indoor unit. I had to dress formally and go to the graduate school to see my supervisor. There is an accreditation team from the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) which is currently visiting the school to see if the minimum standards are being surpassed in the MBA. Did not achieve much as every one is up and doing to see that our "August" visitors are impressed. The weather is pretty ok, especially for strolling.

ASUU strike
« #45 on: June 28, 2006, 04:47 PM »

It has come to my notice that there is to be a nationwide ASUU strike beginning tomorrow. This action is to last till Monday next week and should serve as a a warning to the government. I don't know when all this will stop. Right now Mr. President is not in any mood to listen to anyone since the third term debacle so why is ASUU engaging in such an activity?

Student week in the university has been fixed for next week which means there will be a total disruption of academic activities for another 14 days. This our country na wa.

Am still a Student
« #46 on: June 28, 2006, 05:02 PM »

Had a class today and it was quite a tedious one. Very few students in Nigerian Universities will tell you they enjoy their various disciplines. It ended after like two and a half hours after which I went to see my supervisor. While I was in class, my boss called but I could not answer. (Thank God, it was on vibrate mode) I sent him an SMS that I was in class but GLO said not sent.

Had to stop by at the cyber cafe on my way home. That lightning really did some havoc; about 3 ports on the hub were fried and the printer was misbehaving.  It took me some time to sort this out. It appears the SMS did get to my boss afterall. The Internet link is still misbehaving but on the overall it is at least "working"

A Ride in the Rain
« #47 on: June 30, 2006, 02:50 PM »

Who does not like a good thing? I got an opportunity to cruise a brand new peugeot 406 today and it was really cool.  The feel was great and the car was just flying. Rain was falling but I still made use of the air conditioning. Actually went to feel the tank with petrol but it was scarce so I took me a while to drive round. Got home to a good meal of fried plantain and peppery stew with hot cup of milo. Did not stay much at the cyber cafe today. The place is a bit scanty due to the forced holidays we are undergoing. The rains are becoming more their usual selves - it starts and just when you think it will stop, it starts again with the intensity going up and down with less lightning and more cold.

New Month, New Role, Different Style
« #48 on: July 01, 2006, 02:46 PM »

I have been giving a new assignment at the cyber cafe and my desk moved into a less conspicous place which suits me quite fine. I don't have to worry now how staff treat clients or the other way round as I don't get to see both parties. It will also afford me time to work on my masters theses and gather more knowledge about some softwares. I love to reflect on each passing month and make new resolutions in the new month.

Won't be going to church this sunday because the whole town will be going to celebrate our anniversary and am almost certain the atmosphere will be electrifying but then after that what? Jesus commands us to win souls to his kingdom but it appears some are trying to create the kingdom here on earth.

In this new month am going to make new friends, people that can use their thinking faculty and reason. O yes, some will be christians - but they will have to be "real".  I am equally going to give some people "rope" as am tired of their religion. There is an abject lack of brotherhood within the christian circle due to the prevalence of a "God will bless You gosel" I am equally going to rest my glomobile number as it has brought me nothing but pain. Those people really have the nerve to do as they like with my sms; which is mostly undelivered. Their coverage in Port Harcourt is still very funny and its due to a poor deployment of their masts

Sunday Feast
« #49 on: July 03, 2006, 12:17 PM »

After watching brazil loose 0 -1 to france, i decided to attend our anniversary service on church the following day. It was a rude shock, never have I seen such an embarrasing disorientation; they simply had no purpose and the coach hold I responsible.

Sunday service was great and the atmosphere out of this world. The music, dance, sermon and the feast afterwards was grand. I took a lot of digital shots and will share just one later on. Indeed some spiritual truths were brought to my remembrance which I have decided to practice.

The rains have really arrived, the weather is cool most of the time and the environment wet and muddy. Some of the roads are really bad like the Ozuoba section of the NTA road. Public electricity in the campus is quite stable and I must give kudos to Mr. President on that.

student week
« #50 on: July 03, 2006, 07:59 PM »

Its student week in University of Port Harcourt and the atmosphere is noisy. There have been many processions by students of various departments complete with live marching bands. There has been a lot of display by some ethnic nationality affiliations show casing the diversity of our different cultures, indeed the religious brethren are also not left out in this one week of licensed partying.

Bank Robbery
« #51 on: July 04, 2006, 11:23 AM »

Despite the rebuilding of the broken down walls at the Choba campus of the University of Port Harcourt, armed robbers still had access into the UBA branch situated in the vicinity in the early hours of Monday July 2, 2006. About some minutes past the third hour the entire area was filled with the clattering sound of military type guns. They were shocked when they got into the bank because there was no tangible sum contrary to their expectations. Ever since WILBROS (an oil servicing company) started paying their staff through this bank, there has been 3 assaults on the bank to coincide with month end and each time its the same thing - no money.

This time around, they ransacked and scattered all the physical assets they could see and when they were done proceeded to the classroom area to rob students who were reading. It appears they were not still satisfied with their catch that they proceeded to some of the hostels around. This whole ordeal happened with enough gunshots sounds for over 90 minutes and there was no police in sight. The following day the bank put a notice that they will not attend to customers. We are now forced to close the cyber cafe latest by 8 pm in the evening.

Rain Party
« #52 on: July 05, 2006, 06:10 PM »

I came back from choir rehearsals to meet the campus in a party atmosphere even though the weather was wet and cold. It was the annual student bonfire night but it appears the  show was going to start only after the world cup match between Italy and Germany; in any case it was going to be all night.

The weather has not been very friendly and I was looking forward to my late dinner of hot rice and chicken stew plus a hot cup of milo. The sound from the party grounds filled the entire campus making sleep a little elusive; at about 4.30am my neighbours came back with so much noise as they were locked out.

I relocated to the parlour to watch a little CNN and then noticed that the music had given way to prayers. Indeed we are a very religious people; can you beat that? And the crowd moved out from there to the east - west road junction to hijack vehicles for free transportation to town for the rag - day.

Weather and Feeling
« #53 on: July 05, 2006, 07:04 PM »

The weather today has been very dull, wet and cold. It appears I am ill; needless to say, I spent so much time sleeping and taking a lot of medicines. I also wrapped myself up. Tried to read an academic book and still ended up sleeping; Bible nko? I read it and continued sleeping. At a point I decided to do some light lessons on my bass guitar but I still ended up in my bed. Maybe I should take a hot bath, that only made the sleep afterwards even sweeter.

Its about 3pm now and I force myself up and into the kitchen for lunch, beans with hot milo but am not feeling good at all. I decide to watch VOA news while preparing to go to the cyber cafe for my shift. In the cyber cafe and things are a bit better, it appears the Lord has touched me because am feeling a little better.  Took a little stroll to the vendor for today's paper and went to the post office to pick up my sister's mail. The weather is still dull and cold; its rainy season anyway.

Sickness vs Confusion
« #54 on: July 07, 2006, 03:13 PM »

There seems to be a remote relationship between sickness and confusion, to say I woke up in the morning might not be a very fair assessment because I don't remember falling asleep. My body was running a high temperature and was in no mood to go anywhere. I quickly placed a call to my doctor friend who gave me a temporal prescription pending when she will examine me on her way back from work. From the blues, my mind started playing tricks on me and then everything started falling apart. I needed urgent prayers so sent I many sms to those people I recognize as my friends and brethren; the response was quite overwhelming. I thank God for the ability to have friends in deed and even those in need too. It was quite late in the day when I received some injections which stabilized the situation; at least I slept for good 4 hours in the night.

Sunny Day
« #55 on: July 10, 2006, 04:49 PM »

Today has been pretty sunny. It was about 6am that my best friend woke me up with a knock at the window. He was on his way to work and dropped a book for my colleague in the cyber cafe. After collecting the book, I returned to my bed to catch a little sleep. By the time I opened my eyes it was about 9am and it was time for my medication. I am still not fully recovered from last week's breakdown.

Did a little laundry and then had breakfast, only to return to bed cause I felt tired. It was about 12 pm that I polished some of my leather slippers to put out in the sun and then proceeded to start reading my school books. Its really quite sunny and I think its having a positive influence on my mind and body. Lunch was ready by 3pm followed by another round of medication and I was good to go to the cyber cafe for my shift duty.

Semester Examinations
« #56 on: July 11, 2006, 01:34 PM »

After the festivities in the University of Port Harcourt last week, the faculties have just released their various time tables for semester examinations and already the students are running helter skelter whispering "blue murder".  The cyber cafe is not as full because the students are suddenly trying to cover their course outline overnight. Jamb results have been released online and i shiver at the scores am seeing - they are so high you start wondering what happened; quite a number where withheld. Although the weather is dull, strolling is very convenient and most pleasant. The public electricity is fairly constant and its funny how suddenly i feel very mature overnight. Let me go and see my lecturer.

Flashback
« #57 on: July 12, 2006, 03:12 PM »

Most of my colleagues are on exam break to face their studies. Spent most of yesterday evening hanging out with my best friend and his clone. There was almost nothing we did not talk of under the moon. Got home after 10pm and activated my GLO me2u. Listened to the weather forecast and then went to straight to bed but not before taking my antibiotics. The night passed away very quickly to my surprise and it was morning. My boss has asked me to go to the cybercafe to check out one or two things as he will come in late. The weather is neither here nor there with scattered showers. The university authorities are serious about the payment of development fees and the students are crying because its another added expense. MTN is having serious network problem today and its affecting communication; this was noticed around mid - day.

Management
« #58 on: July 13, 2006, 09:29 AM »

Its amazing the number of resolutions I have broken this year. Oh yes, I have managed to keep one which is stop driving to church in order not to attract undue attention. The rest has not been easy, but I have to take hold and keep to budget. There has to be control over my time and money. Today, I took a friend for lunch and by the time we were through I could not find N600; infact it was when I returned to the cyber cafe from the restaurant that it occured to me. The cyber cafe is quite busy today and a colleague of mine who is on break actually came in to help out which was quite thoughtful. It is such people that I need to be spending time with.

Age and News
« #59 on: July 13, 2006, 09:53 AM »

I got home at about 9pm and met my family chilling. They were actually watching NTA News after which they proceeded to CNN. I wonder why a lot of parents like news. As usual, the Arabs are fighting the Jews on two fronts, fighting themselves in Iraq and trying to start a debate in Iran. The US is continuing their own as the world police (at least they now have terrorists to chase both at home and abroad) and it appears the Indians don't want to be left out. I suggest they all come to nigeria then they will have understanding. Our Satellite system has a mind of its own; maybe because its free. TV channels come and go but some remain constant.

Rainy Day
« #60 on: July 14, 2006, 08:01 PM »

It appears the rainy season started today in Port Harcourt. I woke up to see the rains and went to the cyber cafe in it. The client turnout was quite poor, actually 2 people at about midday. Went to CTL office at GRA and the traffic was very light, both on the road, in the office and even in the bank. Went to see a friend afterwards; and then back to the cyber cafe. Driving in the rain was fun and there was no police road block. Got back to the cyber cafe and the place was averagely full. Went home to catch some rest before my shift by 5pm. Just heard that there was some cult related violence at the faculty of law in the state university some 2km away. Fell asleep while trying to take a decision and then woke up to see that it was 4.30 in the evening. Took a brisk walk to the cyber cafe and it appears a bell was rung in the market; it was full. People are checking jamb results and some are filling their course forms online, still others are paying school fees. Its going to be a long day i suppose.

Beautiful Day
« #61 on: July 15, 2006, 06:07 PM »

Its amazing how much of the creator one learns by looking at His creation. I had a couple of experiences and my perception towards life has changed. Taking a work to and from the cyber cafe I could not help but look and laugh; but maybe I was in a good mood.

Most of the clients today are paying for an hour with N500 note so getting change its a problem. One of my smallies just flashed me and when I called back; she was asking if am going to church with my mother's car (Ouch) and i thought she was a good girl. O dear I wont be calling back if "she" or any other "she" flashes.

The sun has been shinning intermittently today with light showers. On the whole its a beautiful day. Went to have breakfast at a restaurant which I normally don't go to and I regreted. Even the maltina seemed to taste so bitter, I swallowed the jollof rice, stew, meat and all down into my stomach; wont be going back there in a while.

The Internet connection has started acting up; it appears the cyber cafe will be closing early today. Kudos must be given to PHCN; the power supply has been quite stable (it appears NEPA has ears - they have just taken the light).

Rain, Rain, Rain
« #62 on: July 18, 2006, 01:50 PM »

In Port Harcourt, we now have morning and evening, no afternoon. The rains ensure that the weather is always dark and gloomy with a wet environment. When u combine that with no electricity then you will now understand why a lot of people are born in March. Its takes the grace of God and a deep sense of purpose to move around even if you have a car. Some roads are now mighty rivers and the attendant traffic jams are quite complicated.

I was impressed with the type of service I received at GTB trans-amadi branch, they had their security men behave like ushers getting you out of your car and into the banking hall. Purchased 2 chicken pies and 2 doughnuts from King Fisher at the cost of N340, Mr. Biggs is really robbing us at the University.

Had to enter by the main Gate as there was a hold up from the UniPoRT junction up to the AP filling station by the mechanic garage. Its still raining only the intensity is not as heavy as before.

Broken Rules
« #63 on: July 18, 2006, 02:03 PM »

One of my friends flashed me from shagamu and I could not resist calling back. She is a good girl and we talked for like 8 minutes; tomorrow is her birthday anyway. She actually flashed to know which phone I was carrying so that she could send an SMS.

Do you know that I visited the girl that called to inquire as to my mobility to church? Oh yes' I took her up on that issue and she agreed that majority of women are materialistic in approach but went on to say that majority of men are taking to good looks only and that does not come cheap. She also went on to say that its because we are friends that she bothers to make such an inquiry;  I apologized for thinking otherwise and assured her of being a reasonable person.

Anyway lets just say as the spirit directs is the line i'd take subject to rationality since I keep breaking all my resolutions. I did not go to church on Sunday; went to visit a friend who was ill.
