SAMSUNG ML-1750
« #352 on: May 28, 2008, 05:28 PM »

It was a friend that recommended that I get that printer for the cybercafe though am HP - biased. Direct on PC (DOPC) decided to emulate Technology Distributor (TD) who popularized HP by bringing in SAMSUNG products. All of a sudden they have done a policy somersault and now we have a printer with no where to buy original toner. The ones i have got so far are all fake and its a terrible thing. I wonder if I could get some loan from SAMSUNG company to market their products here in Nigeria.

Mobile Weekend
« #353 on: June 02, 2008, 10:35 AM »

Spent most of this weekend on the move. The rooms in my house are being tiled so I have to be supervising the work which has made my whole house dirty. As its usual with Nigerian artisans, there was underestimation of materials which meant my movement to the building material section on ikwerre road. Am on suspension in the choir for being AWOL so i had to be there on friday evening even inspite of the heavy downpour. Saturday and Sunday again saw me in church and really my petrol expenses this month must be quite large. Had to relocate temporally to my parents house till they finish the work in my house and its been quite supportive especially in this my time of need as regards church discipline. The roads are so bad, moving up and down is not a very pleasant task and its worse at night.

Rainy Dead
« #354 on: June 03, 2008, 12:57 PM »

Received a phone call from my mom while at the office today that i should remain in the permanent campus that the administrative campus was under fire from cultists. Soon enough people started running helter skelter; some two fast moving cars apparently conveying the dead (because those cultists don't leave any injured) got to the back gate of the teaching hospital alas the security men had all run away. They had to come down and enter the gate through the pedestrian side and open the car gate for access. Its actually been raining since morning and now every where is looking deserted. 5 people are confirmed dead, 1 of which is a lecturer who actually taught me in my secondary school.

Looking Back
« #355 on: June 06, 2008, 11:19 AM »

They are so many things that looking back now I wished were done differently but its not too late to undo some of them. My suspension from choir should be over this weekend and am really looking forward to the future. They just told us that our final MBA defense should be next week and we should arrange something for the board of examiners. This country is wonderful; we were told on sunday to arrange something too for our man of God whose birthday was coming up. The campus is quiet after all the hullabaloo of the previous days; I really don't feel like staying in the office today especially when i have correction to make on my project. My car too is in need of servicing, the tires are shaking but they have not paid may salary yet.

Its All Over
« #356 on: June 09, 2008, 10:56 AM »

At last sunday has come and gone; HAPPY BIRTHDAY PASTOR. The service was like a party, and in the end I was tempted to change my mind but then its better we parted ways even if its for a while. For sure I am leaving the choir permanently as my schedule will not allow me to be regular. The weather is suddenly very damp and wet; got home in the rain. Visited with my neighbours who were quite boring. Got home and then noticed that I was feeling sleepy with slight temperature; took some paracetamol and ate just a little. Suprisingly we have NEPA light.

Malaria
« #357 on: June 10, 2008, 10:51 AM »

Supposed to have a project defense on tuesday but discovered that i had malaria monday so I decided to hold on with treatment till wednesday but the symptoms were becoming unbearable. Rushed down to the pharmacist to get a one day dose of HALFAN. There is no electricity in my office today so I was at the cyber cafe for a while before going to see my supervisor for what i hope will be the last time. Wheezing slightly as a result of the malaria medication; to my surprise and happiness the project defense was postponed by a day. This should enable me recover by God's grace; had to go pick my mom from the airport and the aluu road is very bad.

First Things First
« #358 on: June 13, 2008, 09:59 AM »

Was very angry today, how could my manager in the cyber cafe switch on the generator in the midst of a storm? The lightning blew the new generator AVR and proceeded to fry the cable modem. This is a time when our cashflow is under pressure and the timing is so bad. Students who are our major clients are on holidays and the bandwidth subscription is due. Got to my parents house and met all the paper dustbins full; and afterwards my sisters will go to church. What a way to start the weekend?

Quiet Weekend
« #359 on: June 17, 2008, 12:18 PM »

Decided to spend the entire weekend in the solitude of my apartment; the weather actually making matters very easy coupled with the the power outtage. Washed the car of friday evening and packed it at my parents house then took transport to my own house. There was this "important" wedding of my doctor friend i thought i'd attend but decided to maintain my status quo - I don't attend church Weddings/reception. I'd prefer traditional wedding  even muslim wedding than church because of its colonial roots. My sister was the chief bridesmaid and my other sisters plus mom were there but trust my dad and I to be absent.

Real Cold
« #360 on: June 19, 2008, 03:10 PM »

Its been long since I experienced this kind of cold weather with rains that is currently tormenting Port Harcourt and its environs. Looking at the weather report on AIT news which I rarely watch, Jos and PH had the same weather of 25 degrees celcius but with PH being worsened by the rains. Oh well i have to dress warmly as much as possible; thank God i have been delivered from all forms of night church activities - never again will i be held down by such fanatism. By the way are fanatics lunatics or vice versa?

Around Me
« #361 on: June 20, 2008, 03:57 PM »

Its amazing the type of things you see when observation of the environment is made. Came down from an okada today and noticed a guy wearing trousers without a belt and he tucked in his corporate shirt for that matter, it appears the trousers were designed without those belt holders. Then i remembered i had seen one guy in church do the same too; It looks quite awkward to me but then o well. Even with this cold weather the kokolets are still wearing their is it sphagetti tops while am looking for a second and even third sweater to put on. Was advised to always fill a form using black ink and letters should all be in caps.

I'll Miss Her
« #362 on: June 23, 2008, 01:02 PM »

Met her in March when i moved into my new apartment and we just took to each other though cautiously. She lived in the flat next door but that might just be an excuse; we got talking and became cool friends with an understanding not to take it to the other level. Its June now and she will be away to Lagos for 6 months courtesy of Industrial Training Attachment; boy am i going to miss her.  Together with 3 other girls she helped me fit into the new environment even though it was at times inconveniencing and yes we had our share of misunderstanding. One thing I learnt from her is that spending of money is not the way to a girls heart, infact how much will you spend that some other person cannot bring even more. Just relax and be nice though not over familiar; knowing when to give some space.

Bored
« #363 on: June 25, 2008, 01:23 PM »

Everything seems to bore me this days and the worse is the office. Majority of the regular students are supposed to be on break and not a few are still in their residential campuses. The cybercafe is dry though things seem to be taking shape - NEPA being the greatest challenge currently as we can't afford to burn 5 litres of diesel for every hour of alternate darkness. Today's sunshine should have been quite refreshing to my spirit but then no inspiration. Tried arranging my formation the other day in PES 2008 and got a continuous whipping with few shots at goal. Something tells me that a great change is about to happen - by the way i have just changed my MTN number.

Bored & Cold
« #364 on: June 26, 2008, 10:25 AM »

They say its not good for man to be alone but I think its cheaper in term of finances. Left the office because of the dark clouds hoping to get to the house before my clothes on the line get wet but it was not to be. A stop at my parents house and a little chit chat with the reverend father professor ensured that not only did the rain beat my clothes but it beat me silly on the bike; thank God the man got me home safely because there was a ghastly bike accident the previous day. In any case my boring day assumed a an added quality of being cold, all my friendly girl neighbours who seemed like a nuisance wont have been minded on a day like this. To add salt to injury there is no electricity from those PHCN people and I don't feel like switching on my inverter so i guess it will be an early to bed day.

Baby Boys
« #365 on: June 27, 2008, 10:51 AM »

One of my neighbours just put to bed and its very interesting. She had 3 boys before now and obviously wanted a girl but alas its another bouncing baby boy so she now has 4 boys. I wonder how they will cope; the 3 boys seemed to wear them out on a daily basis running around the whole place scattering everywhere. Looking back now or is it forward, would like to have just 3 boys and no girl but its God that gives children. The evening was crowned with a beautiful sunshine which made me rush home to hang out my clothes and air the house. Met NEPA in the house and decided to switch on the TV where AIT was trying so hard to show LIVE the testimonial march in honour of Jay Jay Okocha but alas it was not to be due to some technical issues. In any event NEPA soon disappeared and had to busy myself some other way.

Nocturnal Creatures
« #366 on: June 28, 2008, 11:52 AM »

This NEPA people are trying so hard to turn me into a nocturnal creature; not when they bring the light  by 10pm and take it about 5am everyday. When i get back home, I find myself going to bed only to wake when the NEPA guys do their stuff. Spend most of the time trying to utilize the light by boiling water, playing game or watching TV. Its weekend again and the university is supposed to reopen for the second semester so students are being expected to be around anytime soon. Had a private birthday reception to attend in the administrative campus which I had been avoiding but then some kind of necessary evil. Got there with my sister and had ice cream with meat pie and then watched some programs on cable.

Welcome Distraction
« #367 on: July 03, 2008, 11:15 AM »

Even with all the office politics and meetings I was bored and needed some distraction. Decided getting an International passport wont be a bad idea and at the same time renewing my car particulars. Its been a while since I drove to the town; maybe am spoilt by the serene environment of the university campus. The road was full of police check points extorting money from the unlucky ones coupled with fuel scarcity there was so much hold up. I was suddenly very irritated and tried to calm down by using the car a/c and listening to music. The immigration people insist I bring my original birth certificate but i did not want them to know that I was born in Canada; parted with 18000 for something that costs officially 8750. God bless Nigeria

Local 419
« #368 on: July 04, 2008, 03:23 PM »

My boss in the office received a call 2 days ago from a certain Engineer who claimed to be working with SHELL at Escravos and that he had a supply contract which he wanted him to execute but that he should call him back for details. Now this crook had called my oga who is an ijaw man by his native name to get his attention but failed in the fact that my oga asked him to continue as he had a pen and paper ready to write down the details at which the phone went dead. He now told us the story and we just laughed at the whole thing only for another call to come through that my oga should call back immediately as some people are planning to kill him. How far will this people go? My oga will have none of that and just told us of the new development; sounded like a fairy tale.

Decision Time
« #369 on: July 07, 2008, 10:16 AM »

Took a vacation from the internet this weekend and it was worth it though there was no NEPA most of the time. Have this weekend course am doing somewhere at Aba road; with the downpour of Saturday most of the roads had heavy traffic and it almost got me upset. Little things reveal the true color of an individual and it just occurred to me that i had been slacking. Have decided to review my open door policy consequent upon some particular character but really its all my fault. In the name of born - again we suspend all common sense then plead the blood of Jesus or is it embark on some form of fast. Actions they speak louder than words; I have been giving my pearls to the pigs and now they want to trample on me but it wont be. I'd use em to make some type of stew instead.

Its my fault
« #370 on: July 08, 2008, 02:14 PM »

See me see prosperity o, ever since my "no2" came back from holidays in her papas house she has been misbehaving. The other day she came to my house and was just talking rubbish but it did not stop her from ransacking my well stocked fridge. I happened to figure out that her papa asked them to come back to school and gave them small cash with a promise to send a balance later which they felt was inadequate. Needless to say, after I teased her the following Sunday she just flared up and went to town. I did not bother with her though as it was the Lord trying to tell me something; in any case her status has been downgraded to the girl next door. Am trying to attribute her behavioural pattern to the fact that she grew up in Sapele; even though she go say she born again. Its my fault though, I should have known better than to interact with such people and they are 3 of em - gals.

Cold Dark Night
« #371 on: July 09, 2008, 12:52 PM »

The night was dark(thanks to NEPA) and very cold, even though I closed all the windows and wore warm clothing it still was not enough. At about 1am the entire estate was aroused by heavy gunshots coming from a robbery attack on an estate behind ours. This guys shot continuously for like 2 minutes then proceeded to bang on the gate for another 2 minutes shouting on the gateman to open it. This whole scenario was repeated like five times but still the gate did not give way. The cold disappeared from my body fast fast and I visited the toilet like twice, my prayers went to the occupants of that estate as the bullets kept landing on our own roof. Sorrow, tears and blood was going to flow in excess when those guys finally gain entry into that place i thought but as God will have it men of the force landed and rescued the situation. The time was 2.35am and though I lay in bed, sleep was very far from me, was later to learn that a university staff was killed by the robbers in his house while another was beaten into an unknown state.

Locked up
« #372 on: July 10, 2008, 01:49 PM »

Have you ever locked yourself up within? Its an exercise that sometimes makes a whole lot of sense. Once I get into my house and lock the door it is till the following day before I open it again. Scarcity they say increases value and now everyone in the estate is looking at me with respect and its all good. The electricity situation is really helping matters though its been causing me to sleep in excess this days. I wake up about 1am in the night to take a break and last night was terrible because I was just sneezing all over the place. Sent some sms to some old acquaintances and then decided to take a drink and wow was the sight refreshing. My fridge was intact unlike when I was my sisters keeper with some them estate babes coming around. My colleague thinks am just suffering myself for nothing that am not bein myself but we will see.

Busy not Idle
« #373 on: July 20, 2008, 10:33 AM »

Its amazing how focused I get when am under pressure and so busy; my mind just does not start wondering in any direction. This weekend has been so packed with activities which revolve around the cybercafe. Worked late into the night I had to sleep over at my parents by 1am only to get back out by 5.45am. I wonder if the financial returns will be worth all the sweat eventually because my body alarm sensors have been flashing red for the past 48 hours.

Feeling Good
« #374 on: July 24, 2008, 08:16 AM »

Its been a long time since i felt so good with myself. Got to the cybercafe today and chanced to hear 9ice ft 2face and that just made my day. I really owe nobody no apology for the way I live my life and I'll be doing myself a lot of harm if i don't take out time to enjoy myself each and everyday. There are some truths you get to know when you come to yourself; as in the case of the prodigal son. And he came to himself and said to himself; felt on top of the world. No going to church everyday even when am fatigued "in the name of serving God" worse still "committed christian" God bless 9ice and 2face.

Once Beaten, Thrice Shy
« #375 on: July 26, 2008, 01:38 PM »

It always surprises me when I see poverty stricken people steal from their fellow compatriots and I did promise myself that its really no use giving to such people as it amounts to nothing. The other day I came up with a win - win formula for some agents at the cyber cafe and this fellow came to plead that he be given preference as a former staff and possible christian brother. A former staff would have passed by internal radar system but the "Christian bros" talk triggered an alarm but I decided to ignore it and what do i get in return - "Christian wayo"  Grin

Post UME
« #376 on: July 28, 2008, 04:20 PM »

This week will be a holiday for us because there is no nepa and also the entire school is mobilized for the post ume examination by default. Gisted a lot today then went to town and came back. Police presence in the university is very strong and the Man O War people are doing their normal gra gra. The sun is annoyed and everyone is sweating.

Brutal Week
« #377 on: August 04, 2008, 11:41 AM »

There is something wrong somewhere with our educational system. Its not by force that everybody must go to the university or polytechnic or college of education to be someone in society. Come and see the mammoth crowd of titans that came for the post ume in the university. For each candidate there were at least 1 other escort in some cases 5. So many impersonators were caught and giving the beating of their lives by the security personnel who sometimes extorted as much as 5K from them before releasing them. Handsets retrieved in the hall were initially seized but later smashed. At some point gun shots had to be fired to restore the peace. The police were on hand to help out with a number of arrests of which money will change hands

Recovery
« #378 on: August 06, 2008, 05:29 PM »

This has been a recovery time for all of us here at the cybercafe, business was booming and after it all our bodies are now crying for rest. Had to get to our ISP today to make payment for bandwidth but before then I got to queue for petrol and it was not a funny experience. Decided to experinment with my driving technique and discovered that slow and steady is the trick for efficient petrol consumption. Made payment at the bank and went with my teller to get a receipt from the ISP. To my surprise, they were having a prayer session as its their custom in the middle of the day; not wanting to join them i went next door to little afrika in GRA to check the place out. Thatch roof, inside looking very african with so much bamboo and wood yet wtih nice air conditioning. Got some roasted snails and chicken which I was to regret later. My question now is that why wont the ISP put its house in order and satisfy their customers; instead they choose to disrupt their activities everyday in the name of prayer meeting.

Weekend & Rest
« #379 on: August 11, 2008, 12:42 PM »

Decided to shun my CISA class this saturday and rest. My body sure needed it and my house needed some cleaning and warming too. One of my estate gals offered to come sweep the house for me which she did but then i had to redo it all over again when she left as the place was still sandy.  Had breakfast of egg jollof rice and meat in my colleagues house who lives downstairs and then went back up as I had an "august" visitor with some old gist. Its quite sunny today and I really enjoyed myself even chatting up some of the neighbours on the other block. Made up my mind to attend 7am service at my parents church which is were i'd be attending till next year and also go for my CISA class on sunday.

MTN Network
« #380 on: August 13, 2008, 11:40 PM »

We recently migrated to the MTN HSDPA network and the speed was WOW. I have never seen the effect of 512Kbps on one system before and was about to order a 2nd unit but decided to really test it over a period of 1 month. O my dear Nigeria, its more than 5 days since then and the service is erratic. At some point in the course of the week; The MTN network started experiencing heavy congestion that calling  was a problem but funily enough you can load.  Some days it remains on GPRS which is like 20kbps for most of the day making browsing quite tedious. When eventually it passed from 3G to HSDPA the stuff started coughing. I wonder if the USB modem MTN supplied is rugged to withstand moderate continuous use. The weather has been quite dull and been working outside the office on a particular report which is really multitasking. On a worisome my "smally" asked me a question to which looking back now I should have answered NO but instead I said Yes and No - o dear.

Nice Guy
« #381 on: August 16, 2008, 11:38 AM »

Am a nice guy; forget all the sarcasm that sometimes come to bear when I talk sometimes. It occurred to me that some people have been taking my niceness for granted but o well the Lord has blessed me and even when I try so hard to form the sharp tough gee it just does not work. The ladies have become bolder by the day but what do you expect when they put their hands in the mouth of a lion and then are still able to snap their fingers. Ever since those armed robbers came behind our estate, we all have been in trauma. Now I get home and lock my door and stay inside even if an angel comes and knocks its not going to be opened unless the angel can call my phone to book an appointment. Its not a nice feeling; for sometime now, I find myself waking up every night about the same time that those gunmen came. God is my refuge and my strength; though I fear no evil, I do sleep in my parents official quarters anytime am working late at the office.

Rain is Pouring
« #382 on: August 17, 2008, 08:51 PM »

I think Port Harcourt can be developed as a tourist center especially for people from the middle east because of our pouring rain. Can you imagine its been raining almost non stop for the past 3 days and its mostly a medium shower not so intense but the accompany cold is some other thing. My body immunity has been reducing and my sensors have been blinking for 7 days now but I got this personal service contract and a serious deadline. Am a government worker by the way so 4K a day surely goes a long way but the work is grilling. Started about 8.30am on Friday and was finally forced to bed at 12 midnight due to stress induced asthma. Though i actually used a nebulizer and took some salbutamol overdose; the wheezing just would not go totally but like the rain was just there. Turned to and fro in bed and by 3am i had had it and went straight back to my laptop and on to the internet to continue my work. God did come through for me but intend to spend the entire Sunday in bed as the last 2 weeks has been very hectic.

Olympic Joy
« #383 on: August 19, 2008, 04:29 PM »

Against the Americans, not many gave the U23 team much chance but we got through somehow. Then came the belgians with their precision pattern of play and even after conceeding a goal they were still pilling the pressure but like Moses through the red sea; we all had cause to shout and scream in praise to God. It was not so much the number of goals but the quality of the strikes; few of them where the goal keepers fault and some from long distance. These boys should be immediately made to be the core of our super eagles with a few additionals from the main team though they have to work on their level of concentration. It appears all our medal hopes hang on this olympic team as the field and track people are just carrying 6th position every where.
