The way some people behave really makes me wonder whether they are mad or its just a case of pervert mediocrity. Had to drop off one of our directors at the motor park as she was going to get her visa from an embassy in Abuja. Normally she goes by air but right now things are not well in Port Harcourt. This kidnapping thing has long started back firing. Virgin Nigeria and Chanchangi have cut off the PH - Abuja route leaving only Arik and Aero. Now most of the white guys opt to reside in Abuja and come to work in Port Harcourt so the few remaining flights are over subscribed. Some people even resort to travelling to Owerri and then flying to Abuja but even that too no guarantee of space. In a bid to expand the Rumoula road in Port Harcourt buildings are being demolished giving the whole place a dirty look. The way people drive on the road is very terrible, one of them even carried "Jesus" emblem on the back and the worse part is that there was no traffic congestion. By and large the people that stay and work in the university campus are much saner than those in the metropolis.

September
« #385 on: August 30, 2008, 12:01 PM »

I don't know why people make an issue of the "ember" months especially with regards to evil; am sure the night vigil of August 30 would have been filled to capacity across the Nation. Am looking at the "S" word in September and wondering what caption to use. Is it solemn, secret, sacred, stingy, selfish, special or surprise? One thing is for sure some soul searching needs to be done this new month and it might require my going back into the shell. The two noisiest girls are back from their travel and the estate is in a state. One of them has learnt a new generator procedure and its quite alarming. She just puts it on by 9pm and leaves it on till the petrol finishes. The first night sleep took me over and so it was more of the news at 7 to hear that the "i pass my neighbor" was on till 2am but last night I experienced first hand the sound of that empty barrel and it was about 4.47am that the stuff eventually gave way. To think that this girls are supposed to be students from poor homes but I understand they have some "oppressors". The other one puts her generator on to be blasting dbanj - you make me fall in love.

Waste Management
« #386 on: September 01, 2008, 04:09 PM »

A lot of water has been passing under the bridge for sometime now and it did not occur to me till yesterday. The water has been giving more power by pouring rain which ends up being obstructed by blocked waterways either drainage or canals. Its no wonder why we still battle with mosquito and its worse with the common man. Waste disposal as taught me by my parents is in two forms - dry and wet. The dry materials are gathered up and burnt with such breakables as plates and bottles buried while the wet materials which are more of leftover foods and ingredients are thrown under the plantain suckers where they decompose and then nourish the earth. Its a pity now that even in the rural areas you still observe some filthy patterns and it goes to show the true nature of we country because as the saying goes "cleanliness is next to godliness" but again i wonder which god is that?

Ember Month Scam
« #387 on: September 05, 2008, 08:48 AM »

My sister informed me that the pastor in their church has called a 3 day fast to avert the evil of the ember month. These pastors and politicians are just one and the same - all out to make themselves relevant and of course collect the money from the people who are mostly gullible. Incidentally the Ramadan fast has begun about the same time and really it amuses me. People wake up at night and eat as much as 4 meals and then in the day time they will tell you they are fasting when their stomach is quite busy. O well there is an improvement in the electricity situation in the university and its environs which is good for business and pleasure.

Little Foxes
« #388 on: September 06, 2008, 11:49 AM »

It just had to happen but when was what could not be easily figured out. Was doing some work at home with my associates when this neighbour of mine walked in like she owned the place threw a greeting. Went straight to the fridge picked up a maltina and went right back to her room; my guys started itching. Infact she noticed the meat pies I had got for them and came to whisper that she will like to have some. Took some deep breaths with some "hail marys" in between and then told her that after the guys were through and any remained she could have some. When she left my guys could stomach it no more and asked almost shouting "who is that girl?" and "what does she think she is doing?"  The rest they say is now history as "she" has promised not to come to my house after 7pm and not to enter my fridge ever. Its terrible how people behave this days; jumping at everything that passes by.

Bratislava
« #389 on: September 07, 2008, 10:48 PM »

Even though she was just recovering from malaria treatment, we all agreed that it will be good for her to proceed for a 3 day training course in Slovakia at least for a change in environment. Left Port Harcourt on Monday and got back the following Sunday quite excited. Initially she was wondering why the people at the visa office in Abuja were making yanga but now its all so clear. Bratislava the capital of Slovakia is a beautiful European town with rich history. The country has a population of 50 million people yet boasts of about 20 universities. They don't speak English and were actually a bit scared of the dark colour of the Kenyans who together with Nigerians made up the African team. A clean and spotless town; it could easily have passed for heaven when compared to the filth down here. Though there was no airport in the capital, transportation was very efficient and of course no talk of power cut. Back here the last time we saw NEPA was like 24 hours ago and the noise/ generator fumes is about to drive me crazy.

Lock UP
« #390 on: September 09, 2008, 03:55 PM »

Is it that am timid or what? Why can't I tell those girls to go elsewhere; surely am not under a spell. 2 of the 3 came to my house well after 7pm when I was having a PS2 football duel with a neighbor. One wanted to use my laptop to browse and do an assignment. Ok na do the assignment and let me play my game in peace - no way. They now wanted assistance on how to copy and paste in word; Boy was I very angry especially when I lost a game. Now there has not been light for 2 days so my inverter was running down. Do you know? this gals that can't copy and paste know how to go and browse second chance on U tube. I had to warn them to stop as that was not our agreement which was for purely academic purposes. One of them now left to go and book space at a neighbours for second chance. The other stayed to check her emails until exactly 9pm she went to watch second chance. I have been giving this people too many chances. Its time to lock up.

Some irony
« #391 on: September 10, 2008, 04:19 PM »

The other day was a transformer fuse blowout in the estate so each tenant was asked to pay 200 for the repair. Some of the co - tenants said they will pay later as they do not have money just then. In any case the caretaker is a known stingy fellow just like his uncle the pastor who owns the place. All through the morning till the time NEPA engineers switched off the line to work there was power supply. As they finished the line separation and load balancing and left there was no power supply and when it came much later, we who had contributed did not have light. Personally it was just one of those ironies that occur from time to time but some of my neighbours will have none of that and went to protest loudly. Luckily the estate management quickly got their acts together to restore electricity to our block

Some Week
« #392 on: September 12, 2008, 06:42 PM »

What a week? Two days now no light, no water and the office is not encouraging as the internet connection keeps going of with power outage. So many petrol queues all over the place and my car seems to be consuming more than usual. Had some emotional scare in addition to all of this; why did i allow myself to get too close? Funny thing is she's always coming around yet she claims to have a boy friend. I'D have to either cut off or make sure we just remain good friends but then I'm getting conflicting signals. She did mention in passing that she will be playing football at the catholic church for the faculty team and now the "boys" are saying I should try go and watch her.

Nice Evening
« #393 on: September 15, 2008, 05:13 PM »

Finally went to the catholic chaplaincy to watch her play football. The grounds around the church are quite large and there was so much activity going on about the same time. The National Federation of Catholic Students (NFCS) were having their week and the finals of the female football was between the management faculty and CASOR. It was my first time of entering the auditorium and boy was I impressed; the structure was better designed than what we have in the protestant chaplaincy. She was surprised to see me sitting down with some peeps and wondered what I was doing there; in any case I made sure she understood that I came just to watch her play. A light shower started and I really pitied her because of her wet hair. Chanced to meet some other associates who started teasing that surely it must have been my girl friend that forced me to come to their church at which I just smiled. In any case, their team won the match.

Strike
« #394 on: September 16, 2008, 03:36 PM »

These people have started again. What is the essence of calling a National Strike when you know that your workers will loose their wages for the duration of the strike? Decided to have a first hand feel of the cybercafe operations and luckily there was electricity probably from the school generating plant but something did not seem right only could not place it. Eleven systems were logged in for use of which only 1 was being utilized although it was expected due to the student week and although it peaked to 8 the browsing speed was very disappointing. The clients must be praised for not complaining; can you imagine just to send attachments - no way. There has to be a work around and by 3.30pm the school generator went off as earlier suspected.

Market Day
« #395 on: September 17, 2008, 06:37 PM »

Choba market is held every 8 days and gives me the opportunity to eat bananas. Now of course you can buy banana and groundnut from some selected outdoor spots but the banana sold by Mama Ike is quite juicy. Banana fills my system very fast and I end up not being able to eat any other thing after wards. Today is the rag day for the undergraduate students in the university after their burn fire night which left the university campus in a state of filth. Spent half of today in the cyber cafe which was quite tiring; the network kept deteriorating and the alternate emergency link just will not come up. This our Nigeria presents us with so much challenges which makes the obvious seem impossible.

Guests
« #396 on: September 18, 2008, 01:25 PM »

My best friend came visiting the other day and it was not easy. Now am not a very social person so entertaining guests its not my thing. To start with He always insists on cooking indomie, eggs and sardine which is consumed with a bottle of malt and then i have to wash up after. This particular day he opened the fridge and forgot to close it fully - not a particularly careful person but full of gist. I did not seem to mind that the whole house suddenly became sandy as some distraction was needed to take my mind of this weather induced malaise.

Labelling
« #397 on: September 19, 2008, 12:47 PM »

Don't like looking at people through the eyes of tribal perceptions but some times one cannot just help it. I used to think the Yorubas were very superstitious but my sister says an encounter with the Chinese will change such perceptions. Don't know what is with the Ibos and going abroad. Some of them have abandoned plum jobs in Nigeria packed their bags and gone to "Yankee" in the hope of making it only to end up being a gate man or taxi driver. They call it "traveling out" and now it appears my best friend is set to join the bandwagon who are going to school. They say the Urhobo man has a way with women and tends to have many outside but the Ibos have this thing with "male" child the absence of which leads to an eventual break up of the marriage.

Active Weekend
« #398 on: September 20, 2008, 09:29 AM »

Ran out of the house to the cybercafe. Even though seems to be quite bad in terms of the slow internet speed and the low turnout of clients am having this feeling of adventure. Needed some inspiration though not with the weather moving between dry and wet. A lot of people are coughing, don't know if its the flu. Thank God for yesterday, we received payment for a special order work we did at the office. The university campus is still buzzing with different cultural and political activities as the student week slowly comes to an end. After about 10 days of darkness, the NEPA guys finally restore public electricity and we expect the monthly bills next.

I love my country
« #399 on: September 23, 2008, 02:21 PM »

Y? Its the only country where the impossible can possibly happen. Just when i commended NEPA that they put into a new round of darkness but we are used to such now so no shaking. The caretaker says they brought a new bill of 120k for darkness supplied and he does not have the heart to show that to the tenants so he is going to have a tete - a - tete with those dudes. The office was just there the other day so I went to town though reluctantly and ended up with some somewhere challenges in a beautiful hotel - elkan terrace at Abacha road GRA. The food was good, tried as I could the stuff wont just finish. Chicken pepper soup then pounded yam with afang soup laced with cow tail, dry fish, stock fish and then fruit salad. Port Harcourt town is in need of infrastructural intervention. The cars have increased and the pot holes have doubled, so also have the police check points - I almost ran into one the other night; boy was I exhausted and they thought to have got me but when they felt the touch of my amana chilling they asked but why did i not stop? I replied that i was tired and they were just confused and asked me to go. Men I hate stress don't know about you.

Elkan Terrace Hotel Port Harcourt
« #400 on: September 24, 2008, 01:45 PM »

The elkan terrace hotel is located along the abacha road in GRA and has been the home of two of my directors for the past 2 days. I actually entered a lift for the first time this year and then behold an "expatriate" with one arm and it was very disturbing. You mean our country don spoil so tay na invalid and handicapped onyibo men we dey bring in to work in our oil industry and transfer knowledge to our local engineers. Every morning at least 2 teams of about 10 police men come to excort them to the site. The hotel staff were very polite though but there still remains some things to be done. Tried to withdraw money from the intercontinental bank ATM in the reception but it was out of service. The security personnel at the gate were relaxed and quite non challant as they looked quite confused when i returned their car tag to them. The internet connection was quite fast though.

Barriers or Sterotypes
« #401 on: September 25, 2008, 03:46 PM »

There is marriage craze in the air, the altar seems to be congested with many people tying the knots but me still thinks its unAfrican. My mom was complaining the other day that as my friend is marrying "catholic" she hopes am not planning to do the same. In the same vein her colleague is opposed to the marriage of their catholic daughter to an Anglican fellow. The whole thing sounds very ridiculous coming from parents who are in academics and supposed to know better. As I was telling  a friend am not so sure if any tribe is ruled out for now though in the past - Ibos, Edos and Ikwerres were in the blacklist together with non - believers which included Catholics. Now i have decided to keep an open mind as long as the girl understands the concept of eternal life and has style laced with humility.

Motherly Advice
« #402 on: September 26, 2008, 05:51 PM »

Was returning from the cybercafe when I met Mrs. Harry who said she had not seen me in a long time in my parents house. She then asked me if I had moved out to which I replied in the affirmative then she wondered when the wedding bells will be sounded and asked if I had seen the right girl to which I replied in the negative. She then started suggesting that I check my mother's friends daughters, that I should not go far and bring a stranger. That I should not look up up but bring my eye down. I was in no mood for all this kind of talk but thanked her all the same and made haste to end the conversation or was it a monologue in any case I was too tired for that. We have 5 days holiday ahead and I needed to tidy up some transactions.

Happy Holidays
« #403 on: September 27, 2008, 04:14 PM »

Akonuche give you wisdom, naim be the wisdom it comes from the lord. My ikwerre colleague in the office a very nice woman told me "akonuche" means thinking faculty. Tomorrow will start a 5 - day public holiday and today being the last friday of september was going to be explosive. Some people will go for night vigil and others will go for night vigil yes. One will be at church and the other will be in a club but both groups will meet on sunday but don't ask me where. From 9pm the signs were everywhere, the junction behind my window was becoming quite violent - at a point it appeared some gals were unwilling giving or receiving the HIV virus courtesy of some rapists who might also be cultists. Some guy refused to be robbed and shouted for help from the mopol at the other end but they were too far off and there was no light. Those guys were already high from the "indian hemps" they had consumed and the alcohol was getting the better of them. That was only the part I because by 2am the whole place was turned to a burial ground for broken bottles as this boys were really in "the spirit" come and hear them sing. This time around there was light and the guys were calling all the gals to come out and have it in double measure. It became a case of catch me if you can; infact break the gate and door then we will know your serious. After like 45 minutes they all staggard to their places of abode. By 7am the place was filled with more violence only this time the mopol were brought by some of the unfortunate girls to point out the estates where those hooligans were suspected to be leaving. In the end 2 guys were carried away for some special anointing. Am sure going to have a swell time this long weekend.

Fat with Food
« #404 on: September 29, 2008, 12:05 PM »

My best friend came visiting again today as i did not go to my Sunday audit class. The guy has been expanding on all sides and he claims to eat once a day. Each time he visits my fridge is always at his mercy and he sure eats once a day howbeit 1 continuous feast. Today he attacked my lunch with special emphasis on the animal; he had all of the chicken gizzard and most of the lap with a little of the lap and a bottle of coke and water. Then he started shouting that the place was hot that the fan be switched on. I have finally made up my mind to marry a slim shady o; because fatties have a lot of heat and need the fan or a/c to be on and am not a fan of any. We played PS2 non stop 4 good hours and it was fun as there was no clear winner though towards the end He started getting it hot.

« #405 on: September 30, 2008, 08:30 AM »

Nigeria we hail thee, our dear own native land. Though tribe and tongue may differ in brotherhood we stand. Am not too sure I'll be proud to serve my mother land though. Tried as I could ended up not doing the academic work i planned to do. Did get a haircut though and activated my yahoo messenger on my mobile phone. Had hollandia blackcurrant yogurt with biscuit for breakfast and bread with corn flakes for lunch. Practiced some makossa lines on the bass guitar. There was light most of the day to my surprise

Resolutions
« #406 on: October 03, 2008, 02:20 PM »

With the coming of each month i tend to try out new decisions or is it resolutions. Most of the times I end up doing the exact opposite but this time I am determined. No girl will chop my money this new month - o yes they have been getting a little but why? Intend to spend a lot of time with myself and in doors. Need to rest and get myself back and refuse to be rushed. Informed my colleague of my decision so that if he knocks on the door and I don't open he will not take offense. The politics in the office wanted to get to me recently but then its a part of life. Its even better for me to be coming late and closing early or what do you think?

Alone and Happy
« #407 on: October 04, 2008, 07:30 PM »

What is wrong with MTN? last week they suddenly increased the prices of their recharge cards and by today the cards are not available at all. In fact we got news that people were picking up recharge cards and loading in their phones. The weekend was spent quietly making corrections to my MBA thesis. Had to go drop my cousins son in Federal, Port Harcourt and as usual the roads were a nightmare. Go slow caused by people disobeying traffic rules, police collecting their own everywhere and people double parking. Actually read a book "conspiracy of silence" by Chukwuemeka Ike which showed the plight of the "fatherless children" in Igbo culture and some women marrying women. Oh my God I felt really sorry. The day was very hot and I was happy to be alone.

Just Like that
« #408 on: October 12, 2008, 12:40 PM »

Wonderful wonder follow ment when you see wonder wey pass you. You go shout e yo just like that, just like that. Many things dey happen dey say na wonder. When I say wonder i mean wonder follow ment, me myself i see many wonderful things many of them they wonderful them pass wonder. I see am e pass wonder, I shock I react ha - just like that, I see am I shock ha - just like that. I see am I reach ha -  just like that. White man rule us many years we get electric constantly, our people come take over them come build kianji dam them come build the dam finish electricity come stop, 1 years, 2 years, 30 years till now no electricity for town; just like that, just like that, just like that, just like that. Heard my heavily pregnant neighbour is leaving to the US with her husband who has resigned from schlumberger because they won Green card. Incidentally they are Yorubas so maybe my "okoro" theory is wrong. Nothing dey for town to give the youths good example. How our pastors and politicians dey do? them don spoil the tradition and corrupt all the town. them com make the youths look up to europe and USA.

What is Man?
« #409 on: October 17, 2008, 07:34 PM »

The week has been quite busy and at times it was like a part of me wanted to explode in anger. Many times things just seem to fall in place at the very last minute making me to look up in awe. Surely my steps are ordered even when everything seems to be in a mess. Its been almost 10 days now since I read my CISA manual but a lot of other things have been achieved. There has been no light most of the week though in most parts of Port Harcourt especially the federal grid and the spate of kidnapping has become quite embarrassing. I hear even the mallams abi aboki that sell chewing gum now engage in kidnapping only their own money no too much - just three hundred thousand.

Names and Season
« #410 on: October 19, 2008, 10:00 AM »

Most Nigerians have three names of which one is English, some of them like me have up to four. The funny thing is we most times answer two. Now some of the married ladies like my colleague in the office opt to take two of their husbands names and add to one of theirs. Personally i think all Nigerians should have a maximum of three names of which one could be English and should be kept silent as much as possible. The Muslims it appears do not have english names. We have been having longer nights these days and since there is no electricity at my humble abode for almost a week now I decided to buy a rechargeable lamp. The problem is rechargeable lamps of this days hardly last, this one is Qlink and it looks quite flimsy.

When the pastors talk of fertile grounds I wonder if the congregation understand the meaning. There are many many o and its fast becoming a case of give em an inch and you loose a mile. These days na smile i dey take answer person no be small. My actions are speaking louder yeah and the dance is becoming more intense but the music seems to be slowing down. It was not funny yesterday evening; was actually very hungry but undecided as to what to eat. Ended up going home with a very blank mind. What is wrong with me? Perhaps some music would have helped, i better load up my IPOD.

Town Town
« #412 on: October 24, 2008, 02:06 PM »

Went to town the other Thursday and surprisingly the traffic was light. Noticed one "European" chappy actually driving himself in a jeep unaccompanied by any security personnel. Getting down to Ogbunabali, my bank too was equally largely empty so much so that the staff looked so relaxed and where washing African magic channel. Finished what I had to do in good time and came out undecided. Wanted to go eat at margarets but figured that such a luxury could not be afforded at the moment so I started strolling back to Aguma street where my car was parked and noticed one bukka just there on the corridor with 3 tables and lo and behold 2 Asian guys were helping themselves to some good stuff which wont have cost more than 3h per plate. One thing is for sure the era of reckless kidnapping is gradually coming to an end. The drive around seemed less tedious though I almost lost my way in old GRA, one okada man actually scratched my car and went off but that did not disturb me much. Was so happy i achieved what I set out to do.

Office & Politics
« #413 on: October 27, 2008, 06:48 PM »

This my office people have started again and it does not seem to add up. Now the oga is my paddy man so talking bad about him just wont fly but many times his actions are so very unbelievable. He has just approved 4 people for a networking training of which only 1 person is a member of the network team. Incidentally 2 of them are on annual leave and tongues are just wagging all over the place. I started a new posting today with a new helpdesk and its fun because am going to learn to talk gently and firmly. Some people were giving query the other day - 13 of them for coming late to work and they are all annoyed; thank God it did not reach me.

Corruption & Nigeria
« #414 on: October 30, 2008, 01:16 PM »

This country na wa, the level of corruption has passed endemic levels and its now becoming a genetic phenomenon. Just look at the hosting of the Under-17 for instance, the LOC that had earlier presented a bill of 37billion suddenly when Oga Presido cancel am say them fit arrange am for 9billion. Those dudes wanted to steal a whooping 28 billion. Is it the House saga involving Peugeot? The other day that was how we were in our office and this Honda Pilot jeep came to the car park. The sight was to intimidating, some people started crying that poverty is a curse - and out stepped a deeper life dressed lady. When we will stop playing the ostrich with one leg?

Odd bits
« #415 on: October 31, 2008, 11:11 AM »

I almost loose it when am angry; though it occurs rarely. Had a terrible nightmare yesterday and then woke up with a frown. They have been opening locked cars in my estate and searching them; i am tempted to leave my car unlocked at night to save them the stress of break in though I always remove my car stereo face. Am always excited when the month comes to an end and today being the last Friday of the month is going to be night vigil for those that go. My reading has been slowing down for a while but am going to revive it.
