Health Care in Nigeria
« #96 on: August 13, 2006, 10:51 PM »

A current dean of a faculty in the University slumped in the course of his duty and was rushed to the teaching hospital for treatment. About 5 days afterwards, he has been transferred to a private clinic - reason because he was not receiving proper attention. If that can happen to a Dean then you can guess our lot as ordinary Nigerians. Indeed if not for God a lot of us should perish and our government is not doing anything. Arrangements are already in top gear to move him to Ibadan and possibly outside the country (if he can afford it).

This is How Friendships Break
« #97 on: August 14, 2006, 12:47 PM »

Both Friends will think that they are too busy and will not make contact thinking it may be disturbing. As time passes both will think "let the other make contact". After a while, each will think "why should I make contact first". Here your love will gradually be converted to pride. Finally without making contact the memory becomes weak. They forget each other. One day they will meet and blame one another. So Keep in touch with all your friends.

Not Much Happening
« #98 on: August 16, 2006, 02:15 PM »

Not much has been happening these days; even the usual seems to be quite scarce. The rains have suddenly remembered us and my mind has been playing tricks again. Had a test on tuesday and it was cool. Had this "little misunderstanding with a "friendly" friend, I understood its one of those things you have to pass through when u go "checking" the ladies. You won't believe how much time and emotions were spent in resolving the whole scenario. There was so much conflicting advise and everyone seemed to be an expert in the matters of the heart. Well I guess, I have learned somethings and the second chapter is closed.

Fishes and Women
« #99 on: August 16, 2006, 08:36 PM »

It was in the first chapter that I was introduced to the word "Hooked", It does appear to me that 3 in every 5 female final year students in the University of Port Harcourt claim to be "hooked". I started to wonder as to the relationship between a fish and a woman; the act of "fishing" by a fisherman and "razzling" by young men. In any case, it does appear that once a fish is caught on one hook, it cannot be caught on another hook. Where is all this leading to? There seems to be a relationship between the act of fishing and the act of toasting; practice must be a descriptor in the above statement. Don't mind me o, I am doing a class in research methodology and intend to run a pilot study on social relationships.

Challenges of Electricity
« #100 on: August 18, 2006, 10:55 PM »

Today was quite challenging, went to my friend's house to chill because there was no light in my parents house. Indeed, the 3 campuses of the university have been thrown into darkness and the authorities have not provided any relief. Eventually got home by 8.30pm in the evening  with my friend. We left to make some social visits to return back home about 10.20pm; still no electricity. In the cyber cafe today, we had to switch off the diesel generator because it was over heating leaving our clients in not a little discomfort. Its quite interesting because this was not with the former VC who left about a year ago. I hope things are not fallen apart; in any case the current authorities are beating their chest that they are doing well. They surely are.

Not Quite Like It
« #101 on: August 19, 2006, 06:38 PM »

Have you tasted the new maltina lately? Its not quite like it; lighter with a mild taste. I had to entertain my guest with amstel malta instead. Mr. Biggs UNIPORT has the good habit of disappointing their numerous customers on Saturdays; they only have rice and chicken. The electricity situation on campus is improving and the weather is still pretty dull. It appears am going to have a quiet weekend and am not finding it funny.

Quiet Weekend
« #102 on: August 20, 2006, 01:03 AM »

I left the cyber cafe in a hurry to beat the locking of the small gate at the choba campus. It is quite disheartening, that in a university campus of this nature, movement has to be restricted and controlled. Since they started locking the small gate at 7pm, there have been at least 3 armed attacks at the banks with the robbers coming in through the main gate. The security could not do anything when the 'visitors' came calling sometime after midnight with the help of power outtage so why are they punishing us the students. Got home and thankfully there was light. Tried reading a book only to fall asleep, I was really tired. Some of the systems in the cyber cafe have been misbehaving so I spent most of today carrying out maintenance. I did some physical work at church yesterday during rehearsals which I have not done in a long time so my right arm muscle is hurting. Woke up about 10.20pm and noticed 2 sms on my glo line, replied them then drank water and continued sleeping. I could notice that NEPA (forget PHCN) was taking and bringing the light. It was about some minutes after 12 midnight that they finally did it. Sleep had left my eyes by now so I get up from the bed and switch on my laptop, perhaps I might be able to browse till I fall asleep.

Funny Stuff I Read in My Mail
« #103 on: August 20, 2006, 01:23 AM »

During a wedding reception; the groom was called upon to give his response to his guests and it went like this:

I want to first of all thank the Lord Almighty for creating my wife and to also thank the pastor and his wife for lending us their wedding rings.
Special appreciation to my landlord who lent us his car. I am most grateful to my boss for approving the loan I used for the wedding. Big thanks to the committee of friends for the appeal fund they raised. Also to my brothers wife, thank you for lending us your wedding gown. Am so grateful to the cake designer for the cake. It Happens Sometimes
« #104 on: August 21, 2006, 11:42 AM »

I was very sure that I did not wake up under the bed when I arose from my sleep by 6.10am today. I quickly started boiliing water and then went online to read the newspapers and also switched on CNN to get a world roundup. After about 20 mins, I went to fix my breakfast of toasts and cornflakes, then trouble started knowing at the window. My sister woke up from sleep and decided to have her bath just when I wanted to have mine. She claimed I was eating so I was not ready; ok then I said, but make it snappy and I went to my room. By the time I came out the bathroom was empty, I was now becoming agitated and asked her why she did not inform me to which she replied that she thought I was eating. Now I was actually trying to remember on what side of the bed I woke up on. In any case I decided that leaving the house quickly will do me a lot of good so straight go I to the cyber cafe.

Some Day
« #105 on: August 22, 2006, 05:06 PM »

I am now in the cybercafe and its clear my day will be filled with activity. Paper got jammed in the printer and it was not easy getting it out but I did. The cyber cafe was quite busy today so I had to help the client support staff in ensuring that our services were delivered efficiently. The airconditioning was quite tight so I did not feel tired though I took a quick nap in the afternoon. Woke up to the voices of some 2 students quarreling outside, before you could know what was happening, they had started fighting. Within a minute one guy was mending the other; infact the other guy had already broken his arm and people had gathered as usual. I returned my desk when the university security came and took both combatants away. There is nothing good in violence. Rain did fall towards the end of the evening.

Sandwich Programme.
« #106 on: August 23, 2006, 10:38 AM »

In the months of August and September, the University of Port Harcourt runs a programme known as "sandwich programme" for teachers in Nigeria who want to acquire a B.Sc. Most of them are papa's and Mama's. Its run by the Faculty of Education and the campus really looks busy. They love trekking and the transporters are not happy to see them. They bring all their food to cook in school and the bukka people are not happy. In the hostel, they are there, the women with their children and house helps and the authorities are not happy. So who is happy? They the mama's and papa's are. Its fun being young all over again.

Futility of MTN Caller tunez
« #107 on: August 23, 2006, 07:34 PM »

It was 3 days ago that I noticed that my MTN line does not receive calls in the evening. It was very distressing. A friend of mine sent me an SMS to call his line and it was the same result. I could call every body in his house but his line and what did he have in common with me - MTN caller tunez. I called their helpline and a female voice tried to be helpful but I was not convinced. In any case I had tried disabling it but no way.

A Nice Evening
« #108 on: August 24, 2006, 01:42 PM »

It is said that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Due to the spate of expatriate kidnappings in Port Harcourt. My Best friends work place now closes by 5pm instead of 6pm. Infact the management of Julius Berger suggested 4pm but the union guys said it should be 5pm. Anyway we had a nice evening, went to the social campus and had a rendevzous with a friend that had just returned from NYSC. It was fun, strolling, chatting, gisting, got boole and fish. Quite a long time since we had so much fun.

Its a Normal Day
« #109 on: August 25, 2006, 04:11 PM »

It was supposed to be a normal day, I just finished updating the antivirus software on 3 client systems via the internet which did not take as long as I expected. Infact I had driven to Safari Fast foods to pick up some loaves of bread for the house. My dad had travelled to Oleh in Delta State to be with my Mom whose Dad was celebrating his 81st birthday in style. The 2 Local Governments in Isoko were hosting a party in his honor and a book was to be launched. A lot had been planned for the evening - one of which was the watching of the documentary of osama bin laden on CNN. There was some one or two places i was supposed to check but you never can tell what the ladies are up to these days. Got home to a beautiful lunch of fried irish potatoes and dodo with fried eggs. My sisters are really taking good care of me. I left the house back to the cyber cafe after getting some wrong signals, this evening will be a quiet one. Armed bandits attacked the cash office of ECOBANK situated in the administrative park, quite close to the female hostels, the previous night so people activity is very scarce there. I quickly went home to watch the documentary on CNN

One of those Days
« #110 on: August 26, 2006, 03:47 PM »

Thank God its friday and from all indications it just will be a quiet weekend. Stumbled over some research work which is similar to what am doing then it was downloading it that became a major problem. Had to miss rehersals and then I met this "girl" - coming so close after the last chapter, I was a bit careful and quite so. She was quite outspoken for a fresher and had a form of godliness but I was still not sure. I will have to make some enquiries. My best friend stopped by at the cyber cafe on his way from work. It appears might not be going to church this sunday as I need to arrange my project topics submission.

Quality Time
« #111 on: August 27, 2006, 02:15 AM »

In the course of our journey in this world, we get to meet a lot of people - good, bad and ugly under many situations and circumstances. There are some funny characters you jam that you wish will go away but it appears that reason and destiny (for those who believe in it) is not in your favour. To say I am the embodiment of all anti - socialism might be a fair assessment for a human observation from a distance.

I got home from church last sunday to meet this pal in my parents house gisting with my dad, and it might have been that he was just past passing by because he actually returned a DVD he borrowed a long while ago but I did not want to take any chance of him spending the sunday afternoon with me so I left the house almost immediately to my best friend's place. Its been a very long time since I visited what is supposed to be my "third" home so the family was excited and so was I. They served us a very nice lunch with desert and we settled down afterwards to watch a movie and chat away.

Back to the "church meeting" that day, I did not establish any social discourse during or after the service as I was just not in the mood for that so it appears many people did not notice I was there even though I sang with the choir.  I was having a nice time at my "third"  home when my sister called my best friend to tell me that I had a "female" visitor. It was then that I understood the oneness of the spirit - I had killed two birds with one stone by leaving the house when I did. I really did not want to see any body outside family and close associates last Sunday and it appeared the spirit was in agreement.

Tribal Perceptions
« #112 on: August 28, 2006, 03:04 AM »

The Day is coming where "though tribes and tongues may differ in brotherhood we will stand" but what can we do to hasten it?

There was this day I felt quite sleepy in the office that I went out to take fresh air by sitting down outside on a piece of falling mast by the walkway when this chap approached me. He greeted in Itsekiri to which I mumbled a reply (by the way I know and speak only English and of course in unknown tongues) and introduced himself as so and so that he knows my Dad,  bla, bla, bla. He asked for my name to which I answered and he said why is your name Urhobo and I replied but that is my name in anycase that was that.

In the Issue of marriage, there is some cultural bias in the family and among the Itsekiri, Isoko and Urhobo people that some tribes are no go areas. Bini and Ibo (inclusive of the variations in Delta and Rivers state) are no go areas. Now I have noticed some exceptions especially amongst people who grew up and reside outside those areas but for the majority it is largely true. The Ibo's I understand have a way of extracting huge sums of money in the name of marriage ceremonies and afterwards you will still have to "train" a lot of relatives. As for the Bini, their own I must confess is a known "terribility".

The other day a bini girl told me that at the mention of her roots, a "big boy" removed his sandals and ran for his dear life, infact she thought armed robbers had dropped from no where she ran in the belief that they were behind her not knowing that this chap was actually running from her. She got to catch up with him and asked why? Now she is not an ugly person so he said that his former "girl" was bini and that she "dealt" harshly with him.

The irony of it all was that she now said to me that "Auchi" people are different. They are better than "Ishan" and "Bini" to which I laughed in my mind. That is the problem of tribal perceptions. Even amongst the "Ibo" when the chips are down they will say "Mbaise" people are this or "Onitsha" people are this and the discrimination continues. Sadly enough there are some real bad experiences that have been so generalized that it has almost assumed the role of law. I however suppose that giving a general knowledge of the above, one should still give room for peculiar situations treating each case in its own merits.

2007
« #113 on: August 29, 2006, 02:41 PM »

Reading nigerian newspapers this days and listening to news items on the tv stations or radio (public or private) makes me want to puke.  How can we be talking of a 2007 that we are yet to see? This politicians have started their madness.

MTN and Me
« #114 on: August 30, 2006, 05:10 AM »

It is a terrible to think you have a phone only to understand that its just an unneccessary piece of distortion. I work around with two phones - MTN and GLO when am on official duty, and I have 3 lines. Yesterday, my mom called me (MTN) to get something for the house and a friend called  (MTN) to say Hi and I just took it for granted. The cyber cafe was unusually full today, infact the entire university seemed to be bubbling. It was about 3.30pm that my boss came to tell me that my Mom has been trying to call me (MTN) and its not been going through. I then started calling her with the same (MTN) and then I noticed my sister online saying the same message. I was now annoyed; that nonsense called caller tunez which I activated and later de-activated all for N100 is making me loose touch; and to think I called their customer care and the ladies there said it had nothing to do with it. From september 1, i am sending my MTN line on "sabatical leave" and will take up my vmobile line.

By 8.30 pm, i receive an SMS from MTN that they have suspended caller tunez after all the noise they made about it. Tomorrow they will say they hired 2 "white" people for so many millions of naira per annum to develop new products when they can hire 10 "locals" who will do better.  Anyway I have just about had it.

GLO & ME
« #115 on: August 30, 2006, 01:22 PM »

The last post was done about 5.30am and I actually had to stop when NEPA did it. Fell asleep on the couch in the living room and was awaken by my mom. The light had been restored but I was not in any mood for the internet now. Maybe I should watch CNN, that too was boring, I mean, why report the arrest of a man who believes he should have more than 1 wife. Decided I was better off in the cyber cafe so I went to have a bath but before then I decided to check my glo set.

That was where the green devil almost got me. To check balance, I see - Your account cannot be assessed at the moment please try later. I thought it was a joke but its like the reverse with MTN. I can receive calls on my glo but i cannot make calls. Now this should not be happening this early. I went into the bathroom then to the kitchen for a quick breakfast and back to the set all in about 45 minutes and there is no change. I just grab my vmobile line and put it in my 3310 handset and leave the house.

GLO & ME PT 2
« #116 on: August 31, 2006, 06:11 AM »

The rains in Port Harcourt have been quite intense. I had the "privilege" or is it "misfortune" of attending to some 2 special clients today. It was an experience I won't forget. The cyber cafe was a bit busy and we had to be on our diesel powered generator most of the time as the public electricity though available was pretty low. Had a heavy lunch of garri, native soup and fish plus a bottle of sprite which left me in some discomfort; actually it made me want to sleep and I was trying to read some academic articles on the web. I then resorted to strolling outside, taking in deep breaths of clean air as the weather was very dull and wet. By the time I was ready to go home, the intensity of the rain had increased, thank God I took my big umbrella in the morning, it came in handy as I strolled in the rain.

Got home to a meal of fried irish potato and eggs plus a desert of ice cream and cake. It was then I decided to check the state of my MTN and GLO lines. MTN passed the test but GLO was still in limbo. I had sent my baby sister credit through me2u and shortly after that, this problem of "YOUR ACCOUNT CANNOT BE ASSESSED AT THE MOMENT PLEASE TRY AGAIN LATER" started. I tried calling their helpdesk at 121 but that too was not going. So this people want me to only be receiving calls ko? I put my MTN line in the handset and the GLO in the closet; maybe tomorrow I will send them a complaint through the Internet. The last time I did that with vmobile they responded promptly by calling me. Let me see how GLO will respond.

Great Expectations
« #117 on: September 01, 2006, 07:34 AM »

If there was any month I was looking forward to this year, then it must be september.  I think I have been too "generous" especially in a particular "gender" directions and also quite uncharacteristically diplomatic in a lot of things. The time has come to take a stand on so many issues, to cut off all human wasters and speak bluntly on issues of personal interests, on the whole Its time I increase my capital base by cutting down on unneccessay expenses. To start with I have changed my line and am informing only those people that matter. I am going to be miserly with words and focus a lot of time to my work and studies and later on church activities howbeit in a dormant manner. Good Morning september.

Impact of Willbros on UBA UniPoRT
« #118 on: September 02, 2006, 12:16 PM »

It was earlier this year that we were treated to the sound of military type guns when armed robbers started visiting the premises of wilbros which is a little distance from the university. This armed robbers always come on "pay day" and are always "rewarded".  After like three "visits", the company suddenly decided to have all their staff paid through UBA inside the premises of the university and guess what? The armed robbers also moved with little resistance to the university premises to every month end we expect to hear gunshots between the hours of 1am and 4am on a certain day. The bank has built of a fence, hired mopol but this "monthly visitors" seemed not to have taken notice and they came 3 days ago for their "august" visit.

Vmobile & I
« #119 on: September 03, 2006, 06:32 AM »

It appears the gsm networks have conspired to tempt me. Just when I have moved over to be using my vmobile line the network is off on the entire saturday in UNIPORT and i had over a N1500 loaded inside. Oh well just had to make do with good old glo. MTN won't have been a bad idea but I think they have enjoyed my money well this year. A very beautiful saturday morning and the sun is shinning well; i have done my laundry and am off to the cyber cafe. Its the state monthly sanitation and people movement is light; some parts of the university are in complete darkness due to some technical fault. Let me update my yahoo toolbar.

Weekend Indoors
« #120 on: September 04, 2006, 03:15 AM »

The day which began with a brilliant sunshine has given way to a very heavy downpour. It was so heavy that no size of umbrella could save you. I had been reading in the cyber cafe for my final exam in the MBA program and I was hungry but there was no way I could enter the rain to Mr. BIGGS. By about 6.46pm it appeared the referee had blew the whistle for break time so the rains had relaxed a bit. Now there was a very heavy traffic jam at the UNIPORT junction of the east - west road. Walking home, it was so cold and windy even though I was wearing my sweater. The road was wet and muddy, It did not appear that I will be going out this evening on any social visits. At home, I had garri and gbanga soup with dry fish and I took time out to rehearse on the bass guitar.

MBA class
« #121 on: September 05, 2006, 10:15 AM »

My MBA class has over a hundred students and a leadership structure made up of supposedly the class representative who is a guy and an assistant who is a woman. Then there is a fifth column of the bougeois who unknowingly cause things to happen and then make it appear the leadership is responsible. Its quite interesting because this is exactly what obtains in the larger Nigerian society.

About 3 weeks ago, the final examination for research methodology was fixed at september 5, which is today by 9am and it was done by the university authorities after direct consultation with the graduate students and the supervising faculty which is management sciences. I had been reading so hard that sleep was quite far from me and there was some sort of tension; in any case I was ready to unleash all my hardwork on the paper and so it was with a bounce I approached the hall by 8.30am passing the cyber cafe to drop some things.

On getting to the venue, I noticed that there were few cars packed outside and was a bit apprehensive. Inside the hall we were about 30 in all with some people still streaming in. Then the bombshell was dropped, the examinations had been postponed till thursday the 7th at the instance of the class leadership. Everyone was "furious", what nonsense is this? People were shouting one thing or the other.  More people were calling the course lecturer who was equally "annoyed" at the class behaviour. So what really happened?

The class had an examination which made them stay in school up till 6pm of the previous day yet they all left the campus without knowing that the assistant class representative - one nneka by name had gone with 2 "big people" to meet the lecturer with a request to shift the date by 2 days. How the lecturer agreed beats everyone's imagination because he has said it many times openly that Nneka always comes late to class and is very unserious. As if that was not bad enough, this same Nneka had collected N150 from a lot of students so that she can call them in case of any emergency previously. She only called her friends that night and then sent a stooge to announce to the class by 9.15am that the exam had been postponed at the instance of the lecturer. In all of this the class representative was conspiciously absent. Another twist was added, an term paper that was cancelled before, all of a sudden has been ressurected and will be submitted on that day. This country na wa o and to think that the Nneka and all of them coup plotters must have gone to church on sunday speaks volumes of their hypocrisy.

Did i protest to the lecturer or join those that shouted? NO I did not and why? because I am by default a member of the rulling class; so I just kept a straight face with sealed lips while I was boiling inside. That really is the Nigerian situation. We were now over 40 inside the hall and about 25 who are at home are not in support but because of about 10 people who are in the inner caucus and another 10 who are the "big shots" a great injustice has been done.

Splendid Sunday
« #122 on: September 06, 2006, 04:41 PM »

Woke up early and was on the Internet by 7am trying to download chi tables, kendall co-efficient of concordance and wixcosin tables. Ended up on nairaland and only left when NEPA struck. I did not plan to go to church today but spend that time with my books, left the house to read in the office which was closed to clients; went with a friend to visit a sick neighbour in the university clinic. Returned back to the office to read my lecture notes on research methodology. At about 3.45pm, a mutual friend came to take i and my best friend to Mr. BIGGS to celebrate his return from NYSC. Mr. BIGGS has really depreciated, the service is so poor and I was actually sharing my hot dog with a couple of flies. Their menu was so narrow and we did not waste time in leaving there straight to the game arena. Today it appeared was my day, as I easily won all my games on the sony playstation 2 pro evolution soccer beating my best friend aka "d figure" in 5 straight games. Looking back now, I'd say it was fun and really I'd like more of that.

Like in the Days of Noah
« #123 on: September 08, 2006, 11:36 AM »

Woke up this morning to a very heavy downpour, and in that rain went I for my examination. The lecturer had threatened fire and brimstone to give the exam come what may by 9am, but u guessed right, i have now concluded that if you see someone shouting against something in Nigeria; most of the time he is the worse culprit. The exam started by 1pm and it was pathetic. We were all caught with our pants down, its not good to read too much but in any case i am sure i will pass.

On getting to the cyber cafe, I noticed that the number of "tout" have increased so much they are disrupting our activities. This country na wa, some 'boys" come and buy time then pose as staff and charge post - ume clients as much as N600 for with are doing at N300 officially. I had to shut the network a number of times to try and shake them off. Eventually the downpour ensures that they do not get as many clients and eventually they go. Its 9pm and am in the network control room tinkering with the system to try and see how I get put an end to this, in the end i have to go as am hungry and in despair.

Divine Intervention
« #124 on: September 08, 2006, 11:50 AM »

After I had eaten and generally freshened up, was I able to get the formula. I will disconnect all floppy drive points in the cybercafe as that is what the touts use to operate. Its 8am and the rain is still pouring but am in the cybercafe disconnecting all floppy drives and carrying out a network maintenance. Can you imagine one of them touts had the audacity to come inside my office to threaten me? I don't blame he, its the cafe manager that allowed them in that is responsible. The shop owner of the office adjacent to our main browsing room also came to plead on behalf of the "touts" because he has been benefitting all along from them as he scans for them.

My midday the vice chancellor of the university of port harcourt put an end to all the madness by instructing all the banks in campus to suspend sale of cards and the candidates should use bank draft instead. For 5 day the entire community has been under siege from the post - ume candidates. You can't go to the bank because they are there, even in the bukka and then in the cyber cafe. Some of this "touts" had duped unsuspecting people taking their pin and selling it while printing out fake printouts which cannot be differentiated from the real one. The cyber cafe revenue would have been boosted no doubt but to the detriment of our normal clients

« #125 on: September 11, 2006, 10:38 AM »

The sun was up early and I could not resist the temptation to do my laundry before going to the cyber cafe. The area was a bit quiet; I was wondering why when I heard that UBA was yet till open even by 11.30am and it appears everyone was patiently waiting for them. About 2pm, I understood that they had finally started operations. The post ume students had started trickling towards the cafe and the "touts" as usual were all over them. It appears we have reached an understanding  with this "touts" to operate only in one of our browsing rooms so that other clients can have a peaceful and orderly climate in the other rooms. The sun was so hot, I was really very happy, the public electricity in this part of the campus has been switched off as they are cutting down all the trees which they consider to close to the high tension cables.

Typical of Port Harcourt weather, from no where the sun disappeared and the clouds were so dark, I was so sure the resulting downpour will be very dense. We were about to change shifts so there was no way I could rush home. Luckily for me, about 4pm a friend of mine stopped by on his way home and gave me a ride straight home.

Nice Sunday
« #126 on: September 11, 2006, 04:00 PM »

Woke up by 6.45am still feeling sleepy but I had to have a quick bath. My baby sister's birthday was today and she wanted to celebrate it in her school so I was giving her a ride there. UNIPORT - UST - UNIPORT and am at home by 9am. Decided to spend the next 4 hours watching christian TV from daystar to insight to spiritworld  and tct. It was very interesting, there is a particular doctrine which i dub "theory of the sheep" making the rounds now. Just before my examination last week, a mobile preacher talked about it and now on TV about 2 other pastors in different locations also talked about it. One thing is for sure, if I ever get a chance to change church, location will be very important as I am not finding it funny going so far away in the name of church and to think that my parents warned me well its all good.

Bad policy or Bad Implementation
« #127 on: September 12, 2006, 01:22 AM »

In the beginning of the rainy season, the university was hit by strong winds and heavy downpour which resulted in physical destruction of some bad sections of a newly built wall and the pulling down of electricity power lines by some trees. Indeed some roads were blocked as a result of the falling trees. A decision was reached to cut down trees that were close to the electricity lines and others that possed a threat by the university authorities and the contract was awarded. I understant that to cut each tree will cost about N4000.

Starting from last week, they began to cut ALL the trees in the university except for those which are on the university road leading from the first gate to the roundabout. All of a sudden the school looks naked, trees have a beauty in themselves and are symbolic with an academic environment but it appears the contractors are more intent on making their billions. The worse part is they are largely unsupervised and end up causing the falling debris to cut existing power lines (i wonder if they will also give them another contract to rerun the destroyed electricity cable). In the staff quarters where I stay there is no light presently, and this is supposed to be a university community - a centre of excellence. Trees traditionally act as wind breakers but it is God that will be witness when the next great wind comes. Trees that take at least 5 years or so to grow, those that should not be destroyed have been lumped up with the easy going melina tree.

Tomorrow we will say the politicians are bad and to think that we have a geography department in this school is so depressing. Why we continually inflict damage and harm on our society is mind boggling?
