I was born and brought up in Calabar and still have my parents there. I spent all my holidays (xmas, etc,) there and i can vividly say it's a fun filled place to be. Cost of living is moderate, environment is clean (the cities) and lots of relaxation spots. I can be your host if you visit b/w 20th Dec. and 4th Jan. 08.

Calabar is a beautiful Town and is relatively affordable. For a comfortable house that contains a Bedroom, Parlour, Kitchen, Bathroom you should be paying between One Hundred and Fifty Thousand to One Hundred and Eighty Thousand. Make sure you insist (to your agent) on living in Calabar Municipality (State Housing, Ibom Layout, Mekenge Layout). You'll be able to survive quite comfortably.

Of course you wont be bothered by traffic and dirt. You'll be breathing fresh air.

Starting a business in Calabar depends on you (Patience, Perseverance) and the type of Business. It might be slow at first but target the students (Unical students) and be good to them, they'll always come back.
Job opportunities were rare until recently (the tourism boom). You can get jobs at the Tinapa Resort, Tourism Beareau, Epz, Banks. Its still difficult thought to make it 'big time'.

The people are really friendly and funny once you get to know them.

Criminal activities exist as in everywhere else, but its nothing to be worried about.
The fire service is operational (Believe me, i've used them)
These are the Emergency Response Nos
- 08077022450, 08022883008. They'll connect you to the police and Fireservice.

If there's anything i think about i'll let you know.

All in all, Calabar is fun.

People keep talking about calabar women, it is just as being in PH or Lagos Abeg,there is a lot of investments to explore in Calabar if you have the Capital ranging from Fishing, Fast food, Crushed rock, and many more to mention.It is a place that your life can have a meaning not like PH that you will be hold up in Eleme junction for 5 hrs everyday in traffic.

i lived most of all my life in calabar from 1986 till 2005,  till i moved away to serve in lagos. Calabar is great, i mean i can't live there again tho since ive gotten used to the bustle of lagos, but its fun to go and chill there and stuff, my parents still live there and there are still fun hangouts- Mirage, NAF club and i hear some new places are popping up, beware of efik chopping babes tho,  lol,  u don't need a lot of money to have fun in calabar tho i hear thats changing slowly,  i should be there by the 23rd- if u havent bought your air ticket to get there before christmas- then forget it- because airlines are booked, yup! that time of the year

Visited Calabar for the first time this past weekend so I don't really know much.

But I do know it's a beautiful and clean city. And boy did I have fun just in about 2 days!

@EPOMA
Talk about Eleme junction traffic!! Tufiakwa! When I was leaving for Calabar on friday, the traffic there was unimaginable

Imagine the sharp contrast when I got to Calabar!

After such a relaxing weekend, came back right into traffic! I just shook my head and realized I couldn't live in the bustle of this mad town!

Calabar it is oh! Korrect town, planning to spend xmas there!

@Colours
I envy you small sha and all those who live in Calabar!

Hi colours.

You want to start a professional photography outfit? You have serious competetion in Cybermul. Like i said though, target the students first and foremost and they'll give you a heads start. If you can get office space somewhere close University of Calabar gates or Marian. then you're good to go. If your production is good, then of course it will be financially rewarding especially this time of the year (Christmas), the carnival, mountain race, artist performing every night.
They're sharks out there but of course you still got loads of chances.
Good luck girl!!!

Poor you, the poster is female, did u even read well at all, u were just jumping to say somting irrelevant. Mind you, Calabar women are the most caring and respectful women, know how to take care of their men, so other women should inprove on their stuff instead of being scared of them.

Am a full blown Calabar man.  The town is fun. Whomsoever comes here is on a journey to catch fun of a lifetime. I live in Channel View Hotels (courtesy,my employers) and my experience here is that the town is the best place to invest money especially in tourism support and related areas.  Photography is very rewarding.Yes, a former top PDP man owns Cybermul (the only top photograpy shop) and I tell you, the market is only evolving.There is plenty room for competition.   Eateries and fast-food joints are spinging up everywhere.  At the last count,Mac Bite and Fiesta Bar just opened shop. Many more are on the way.  There's boom for business.  Hotels are fully booked into 2008. Same for air travel. If you need any of these, you need to contact persons on the ground to assist you get over them.

The carnival is slated for 26th and 27th of December! Two full days of non-stop fun! Xmas shows have been on, since the beginning of the month.  There is Miss Calabar Carnival Peagant to be held in Studio 2 at Nollywood, Tinapa on the 22nd.  Reservations are about to be sold out.  Each table for ten guests goes for N25,000; minimum retail rate. The street lights are being ferrociously rehabilitated, to be linked to the Tinapa power plant and will sure be running before the next few days.  It means, with or without NEPA (or PHCN?), the lights would remain on.  WE are having our fun here.  You are welcome to join us experience life in Calabar. No fears at all!!!!!!!

I Dey Vex,
Hotels are of classes.  The most expensive presently (with the best facilities) is the Metropolitan, a 4-star hotel in all respects. A room (single) goes for 20k/night.  That is the cheapest.  ChannelView comes second, with a single room at 14k/night, double 24k.  Am afraid,you may not get any room in either of the 2 until early next year.  They are fully booked!

There are others like Pyramid Hotel with lower rates.  We have Noble Place,Le Chateau, etc with rates as low as 6k/night,single and progressing in that order. You may contact me if you need further assistance and info.  We are here to share whatever we can. Cheers! mel_celestine@hotmail.com
