Politics / Kano Pays N10,000 Dowry On Each Bride At Mass Wedding by not2long(m): 9:29am On May 16, 2012
A blind couple, Batula Umar and Adamu Faidawa, and a Muslim convert, Isa Gamber from Lantang in Plateau State were among the first set of 100 couples who tied the knot at a mass wedding conducted yesterday at the Kano Central Mosque by Kano State Shariah Police, Hisbah Command.

Commercial activities were temporarily halted in the city as a large crowd turned up to witness the marriage ceremony that took place at the Kano Central Mosque located within the precinct of the Emir Palace. In line with Islamic tradition, the grooms and their accredited representatives were present at the mosque in a ceremony that was solemnized by the Chief Imam of Kano Central Mosque, Professor Sani Zaharadeen.

The brides were the first set of 1,000 divorcees and widows the sharia police screened for marriage to available suitors. Grooms were dressed in flowing robes as a Hisbah official read out the names of the couples at the mosque.

Sule Alaramma, a 55 year-old groom stands outside the central mosque with well-wishers in the northern Nigeria city of Kano on May 15, 2012 after the mass wedding of 100 divorcees and widows organised by the city's sharia police known as the Hisbah. The brides are the first set of 1,000 women the Hisbah plans to marry off as part of strategy to curb social and sectarian unrest in the city. AFP PHOTO

The brides were represented by the Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, and the grooms by a senior government official on behalf of Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Also in attendance were the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who also doubled as the father of the day and notable Islamic clerics in the city and beyond who witnessed the mass wedding bankrolled by the Kano state Government.

Pays N10,000 dowry on each bride

Kano State Government paid N10,000 dowry on each bride on behalf of each groom, and also provided household utensils and furniture worth a hundred thousand and additional N20,000 each for economic empowerment of the brides.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the brief wedding ceremony, Director General, Kano HISBAH Board, Malam Abba Sa’id Sufi, explained that necessary steps regarding the health status of the grooms were ascertained in line with laid out procedure of the Board.

He disclosed that a Non Government Organisation headed by Hajiya Atine Abdullahi , executive director, Voice of Orphan Widows and Divorces of Nigeria (VOWAN) had notified the board of existence of over 1,000,000 divorces and widows in Kano which spurred the board to take up the challenge to fix them.

He lamented that in the past there was no contract agreement between would be couples neither do we have proper arrangement in marriage before couples entered into marriage, stressing that the near absence of a social contract was principally responsible for the collapse of marriages among faithful in the city.

Beneficiaries react

“I’m very happy today. May God reward all those involved in this project,” 40-year-old bride Magajiya Ya’u said. One of the grooms married his second wife, as Islamic beliefs allow for up to four.

“I’m in high spirits today because I have married the woman of my choice virtually at no cost because the government has shouldered the cost,” said 55-year-old Sule Alaramma, surrounded by well-wishers outside the mosque.”

Hisbah programme

The wedding was a product of a Hisbah programme seeking to match divorced and widowed women looking to re-marry with available men. It aims to address what officials say is a high divorce rate as well as to provide a stable home environment for children.

Part of the goal is to reduce unrest in Kano, which has been hit by deadly violence blamed on Islamist group. Analysts say frustrated youths have helped fill the ranks of the Islamists.

Women who volunteered for the programme included those left in difficult circumstances after the death of their husbands or a divorce in a region where arranged marriages are common.

The programme was run in conjunction with the Voice of Divorcees and Widows Association of Nigeria (VOWAN), and officials say all women participated on a strictly voluntary basis.

Women and men who qualified were allowed to meet each other at the Hisbah offices and decide on their own who they wished to marry.

“We are grateful to God that we have begun to realise our dream of marrying 1,000 women as part of the government’s commitment to mitigate the social malaise we are facing in our society,” the head of the Hisbah, Aminu Daurawa, said after the wedding conducted by the city’s chief imam.

“We will continue to conduct the weddings in batches and soon we will have the wedding of the second set of 100 women already screened.”

Outside the mosque, a large crowd waited at the gates while the sharia police screened grooms before allowing them to enter the mosque.

Armed policemen kept watch in the scorching heat amid drumming, singing and dancing.

Politics / Six Policemen Beat Colleague To Coma by not2long(m): 1:43pm On May 12, 2012
IT was a show of shame Thursday night at Eleme roundabout in Port Harcourt when about six Police men pounced on one of their colleagues beating him to coma because he allegedly resisted their effort to extort money from a commercial bus driver.

Eye witnesses gave the name of the Mobile Policeman who was beaten to coma as James Ameh and attached to Mopol 56. They said he was in a commercial bus when suddenly about six Policemen stopped the vehicle, ordering the driver to hand over the key to them. They said he had flouted traffic rule at about 7pm when he picked a passenger in the area.

The driver who did not want to waste time allegedly alighted from his vehicle to negotiate with the Policemen who insisted he must part with five thousand naira. At this point, the Mobile Policeman, James Ameh who was reportedly on the front seat with the Bus driver had to come down to appeal to his colleagues to let the driver go for his sake.

The Policemen were allegedly uncomfortable with his role in the whole drama. And one of them had to push him, telling him to get off their way. Before the Mobile Policeman could even regain balance, the six Policemen reportedly started raining slaps at him from all sides. In the heat of the ugly drama, the anti riot policeman allegedly slumped.

The eyewitnesses said it took the intervention of sympathisers to move him from where he allegedly slumped.

When contacted for comment on the alleged shameful conduct of some Policemen in his command, the state Police Commissioner, Mr Mohamed Indabawa said those allegedly involved were being investigated. He said the matter had been brought to his attention. “We know those said to be involved. And the whole issue is being investigated”, he said.

Islam for Muslims / Difference Between Shia And Sunni Muslims by not2long(m): 12:08pm On May 12, 2012
i have discovered that most Muslims tend to associate themselves to a particular sect(shia and sunni)i know a lot will disagree with me that being a Muslim comes first, but when i look around and see how far these people are willing to go for their different sect, brings me to ask whats the difference between both sect and why are they at each others throat around the world.you'll see shia and sunni fighting in Iran and Iraq.even when i was in school, there was a fight in the school mosque and the school later had to intervene, and it boiled down to being a shia or sunni, so for the sake of knowledge, can you explain the difference between the two group and their doctrine.thanks for your response.

Politics / Forget Northern Christian In Ur 2015 Presidential Bid, NOSCEF Tells Arewa Elders by not2long(m): 7:42pm On May 07, 2012
The Northern States Christian Elders Forum (NOSCEF) this afternoon in Abuja has told the elite of Northern Nigeria to forget them in their 2015 presidential bid. The forum said it will no longer be cajoled in believing in one monolithic North irrespective of religion and ethnicity.

In a communiqué issued at the end of NOSCEF and the National Executive held in Kaduna on May 3, the Christian elders bemoaned the behavior of theNorthern elite and elders whom they accused of using the name of Sir Ahmadu Bello and Northern Christians in achieving political interests.

In the communique, which was signed by Evangelist Matthew Owoijaye, Chairman of NOSCEF, and IliyaYusuf, General Secretary, the Forum called on the Northern Elders and Muslim Ummah to call Boko Haram to order.

“The members of Boko Haram are not spirits,” they said. “They are flesh and blood. They live in houses, eat food somewhere and sleep somewhere. How come Village Heads and Traditional Rulers claim not to know them?”

NOSCEF also called for a National Conference. “We need to restructure Nigeria, the communique said. “We want the 6 geopolitical zones to become Regions with a little alteration here and there according to the wishes of the people.”

They said they would like to see each zone manage its resources and pay tax to the federal Government as it was in 1960 and 1963 constitution. Under their proposal, the Federal Government“will take off its hands from Education, Agriculture, Water Resources, Industries, Mineral Resources, Research and Technology, health, Power Generation, Women Affairs, Youths and sports, Works and Housing.”
Below is the full communiqué:

1. The meeting noted the deterioration of security especially in the north eastern sector of Nigeria and now encroaching into the middle belt of Nigeria.

2. Alarming still is the incessant and deliberate attacks bombings and shooting innocent Christians even at their places of worship i.e Churches - Kano, Plateau, Borno, Bauchi, Abuja,Gombe.

3. The reason Christians do not retaliate is not because we are cowardly but because that will be a sin. It is unfair to go and attack, kill or maim people that are innocent, that may not even know the attackers or may even hate what the attackers are doing. What offence did the worshippers in the churches commit against Boko Haram?

4. We had given the Federal Government of Nigeria time to retrain their security forces on how to tackle terrorism. Our patience is running out. We are hereby blaming the Federal Government for any woes visited on us.

5. We congratulate the Speaker and Faruk Lawan group for doing a bold job.

6. We also congratulate President Jonathan for not intruding in the probe. We condemn in totality the attempts to make Nigeria ungovernable.

7. We send our condolences to the family that are bereaved in these bombings and attack, may the good Lord comfort them.

8. We want to remind the northern politicians that 2015 is very close by their silence and inaction concerning our plight strongly noted. Let none of them come near our doors saying we are one hen it is time to canvas for votes.

9. We send a strong objection to those who are usingSardauna’s name to project themselves. Sardauna had Dr. BarauDikko a Christian as his personal physician and Chief SundayAwoniyi a Christian as his Secretary. Alas, today those who delight to use his name are overtly or secretly promoting or rejoicing on the genocidal war against Christians in the northern states. How would Sardauna feel now if he were to see the havoc wrought on the northern states by its own people?

10. Sardauna did not accumulate wealth neither did he loot the treasury. Those who lap on his name do not show any resemblance to Sardauna. Sardauna would not have kept quiet or sponsored the heinous crimes and vicious attacks on Christians in the northern states.

11. We hereby call on the Northern Elders and MuslimUmmah to call Boko Haram to order. The members of BokoHaram are not spirits. They are flesh and blood. They live in houses, eat food somewhere and sleep somewhere. How come Village Heads and Traditional Rulers claim not to know them?

It is the African tradition that fathers call their children who are misbehaving to order. It is a mark of failure for a father to invite the police to dialogue with his errant son. Police do not dialogue; they prosecute. How come the Northern Elders are calling on the Federal Government to dialogue with BokoHaram? Is it not the duty of these elders to keep their wards in check?

12. We call on the Federal Government to refuse to be intimidated and to show that they are not intimidated by bringing the sponsors of Boko Haram to justice. Security forces claim they have arrested so many members of Boko Haram. Have they not gathered enough information to move against the sponsors who want to make this country ungovernable if they are not in power?

13. TRUE FEDERALISM

We are hereby calling for National Conference. We need to restructure Nigeria. We want the 6 geopolitical zones to become Regions with a little alteration here and there according to the wishes of the people.

Each zone will manage its resources and pay tax to the federal Government as it was in 1960, 63 constitution. The Federal Government will take off its hands from Education, Agriculture, Water Resources, Industries, Mineral Resources, Research and Technology, health, Power Generation, Women Affairs, Youths and sports, Works and Housing.

The Federal Government will be solely in charge ofDefence, Foreign Affairs, Customs and Aviation.

14. The Region s and the Federal Government would share Judiciary, the police and information ministry. All the Federal Government Parastatals and Ministries that siphon trillions of naira every year will be scrapped. Wastages and outright looting of public funds would be a thing of the past. Each region will develop at its own pace. The Federal Government will get less than 30% of what it is getting now. Taking power at the centrewill become less attractive.

15. ALMAJIRI SCHOOLS OR MUSLIM MISSION SCHOOLS

We Christians in the northern states welcome the idea of the Federal Government helping almajiri schools in the present set up. We view almajiri schools as Muslim mission schools. We Christians also have our mission schools. There is only one main difference. The Muslim almajiri schools teach only Islamic studies while the Christian mission schools teach Christian religious studies and include secular subjects like physics, chemistry, biology which schools in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran,Iraq also teach. The Federal Government has released N5 billion to the Muslims, we congratulate the Minister of Education for that. We however remind Mr. President that the Christians are waiting for their own N5 billion naira. We remind Mr. President that the constitution forbids him favouring one religion above the other.

16. RECRUITMENT INTO THE POLICE

Our security men are overstretched. We suggest that the Federal Government should go into massive recruitment of graduates into the security system Nigeria would be able to curtail violence while at the same time employment will be available to jobless graduates.

17. KEROSINE SUBSIDY
We must maintain subsidy on kerosene for 2 main reasons

i. That is where the masses benefit

ii. High price of kerosene will lead to depletion or our forests, or our savannah trees in the north, leading to desert encroachment. Nigeria will then have to turn round and spend billions of naira in stopping desert encroachment.

18. We warn the National Assembly and the Federal Government not to turn deaf ears to the cry for a national conference. It is an urgent need. Failure to do this may consume them as it may consume Nigeria.

19. We agree with Elder Dr. Maitama Sule that Nigeria should not be allowed to break. We commend the Northern Elders for calling for meetings to see how to build unity in the North. Christian Religious study is not taught in government schools in the core north. It was shocking to us that the Northern Elders invited our leaders to the meeting but did not allow them to speak even after they had introduced themselves. There cannot be one North without equal treatment. They should concentrate on getting three friendly regions out of the North than thinking of the north as one region again. Situations have overthrown the idea of one north.

20. What took place in Bayero University Kano (BUK) would have not happened if the Christian community were allowed to have their own Chapel. We hereby call on the Federal Government and Head of Federal Institutions to allocate land for building of churches in the nineteen Northern States.

Politics / Zamfara: Sharia Officials Jailed For ‘camping’ Ladies by not2long(m): 11:49am On May 07, 2012
The High Sharia Court Tudun Wada in Gusau metropolis of Zamfara State has sentenced two officials of the state Hisbah Commission to 14 months in prison and 15 strokes of the cane each for camping some ladies at an undisclosed location.

The two officials, Alhaji Lawali Abubakar Maradun and Alhaji Umar Idris, were found guilty under Section 155 of the Sharia Penal Code.

Delivering his judgment on Friday, the sharia court judge, Alhaji Lawal Sale Gusau, said the two accused were found guilty of the offence, having made confessional statement of committing the act.

He said it was unfortunate that the officials, who were supposed to ensure the enforcement of sharia laws, would participate in an act that did not only tarnish their image as Muslims, but even affected the commission negatively.

“To serve as a deterrent to others, this court has no option but to sentence the accused to 14 months in prison and 15 strokes of the cane, based on Section 296 of the sharia criminal procedure code,” he said.

He, however, ruled that the convicts had the right to appeal within 30 days.

Politics / Tony Anenih, Fingered In Assassination Of Edo Governor's Aide by not2long(m): 1:15am On May 06, 2012
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State today obliquely referred to Tony Anenih a member of PDP'S board of trustees as the mastermind of in the assassination of his private secretary.

In a tearful speech earlier today, the governor said, “ a certain old man, in his 80s, a godfather, in Edo state is the mastermind of the assassination of Olaitan Oyerinde

Even though stopped short of mentioning Chief Anenih’s name, sources within the Edo State government are accusing Tony Anenih of being behind the horrific act.

Olaitan Oyerinde, the Principal Private Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo State, was assassinated at his home in the early hours of Friday, May 4.

“Chief Anenih has a nest of killers at his disposal, and we believe he was behind this cowardly act,” said a senior aide of Mr. Oshiomole.

According to this aide as well as other officials of Edo State, Mr. Anenih had sworn to wrest the reins of power in Edo State from Governor Oshiomole and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) "by all means necessary."

Mr. Anenih has a reputation as an expert in the use of violence to achieve political aims, especially in stealing elections. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had articulated the approach as a "do-or-die affair".

A source in the Edo State capital of Benin City told SaharaReporters that members of Oshiomole‘s cabinet as well as ACN leaders in the state are discussing the allegations against Mr. Anenih and the PDP as well as an appropriate response to the PDP's plan to cause mayhem in the state as part of a strategy to manipulate the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.

“Believe me, we know that Chief Anenih is the chief architect of this homicidal quest by the PDP to seize power in Edo State.”

Another source told SaharaReporters that the allegations are strengthened by a recent encounter between Louis Odion, the Edo State Commissioner for Information, and Mr. Anenih, one of the principal leaders of the PDP, a party that Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka once called a "nest of killers." Mr. Odion has told friends and associates that when he recently ran into Mr. Anenih at the palace of the Oba of Benin, the PDP chieftain threatened to "deal with him soon." A few days after the alleged encounter, Mr. Odion, a former newspaper columnist, barely and providentially escaped an assassination attempt—because he was invited to the home of his colleague after a late night meeting.

Several sources told SaharaReporters that assassins visited Mr. Odion’s home around the same time that the assassins who killed Oyerinde struck. “The killers couldn't find Odion because he had stayed the night in the house of a colleague,” said a source. The source added, “The Commissioner for Information owes his life to his decision not to go home that night.” Our sources disclosed that Mr. Odion suspects that the assassination attempt was directly linked to the threat issued by Mr. Anenih.

Shortly after Mr. Odion revealed the assassination attempt, there was an attack on the governor’s convoy. “That attack was premeditated,” said on source. Three journalists in the convoy lost their lives in the attack, which the governor told the media was an assassination attempt.

Even though elements within the PDP wanted the world to believe that what happened to Oshiomole's convoy was an accident, the assassination of Mr. Oyerinde, the governor’s chief strategist, is seen as the validation of "the elaborate plan by the PDP to eliminate as many people as they can around the governor, if not the governor himself. The whole plan is to be able to create fear and muddle the waters before the coming elections, which they know they cannot win", said a source close to the governor.

A prominent politician in Edo State told our correspondent, "What we are witnessing in Edo State is the continued impunity of this cabal of killers which has remained unchecked since the time they assassinated Chief Bola Ige, Chief Harry Marshall and Chief Dokibo.” The politician said the cabal had also assassinated many others and got away with it. “They know that they have the protection of their party in power with its control of all the security agencies. You have a cabal of killers that could kill the Attorney General of the Federation and get off free and even get one of those accused to become the chairman of a major committee in the Senate. Such people will not wince in killing an aide of a governor. They know that yet another assassination will be followed by condemnations and pledges by the police to find the killers and that that will be the end of the story. What happened when they killed Dipo Dina in Ogun State? What happened when they killed Ayo Daramola in Ekiti State?"

The politician, who emphasized that the "callousness of the PDP’s cabal of killers has to be advertised to the civilized world," added that "only recently the notorious Iyiola Omisore, who was alleged to have been implicated in the assassination of Bola Ige and was freed by the courts in a very scandalous trial process, openly threatened to illegally stop the convoy of the Governor of Osun State and waylay the governor. He was not even invited by the police for questioning. This is the legacy of Obasanjo's ‘do-or-die affair’ that the likes of Anenih helped to institute.”

The politician disclosed that people like Mr. Anenih and the top echelon of the PDP pose a grave threat to Nigeria’s shaky democracy. “Perhaps the only option left to the people is mass uprising against the reign of impunity of the PDP and its leaders. Nigerians should not stand around and wait for the next victim."

In its reaction to the murder of Mr. Oyerinde, the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) stated: "The way the politics of Edo State is going is reminiscent of the First Republic politics in the old Western Region which led to tragic consequences for the entire country."

On his part, Professor Wole Soyinka deplored the killing of Mr. Oyerinde, vowing, “the agents of darkness and retrogression will not triumph.”

In a text message on the issue, Mr. Soyinka said, “The hand of the assassin is clear as day. It reaches all the way back to the killing of Bola Ige. Please convey my deepest condolences to his (Oyerinde’s) widow, children and colleagues.”
