My understanding of the story is that the Fulani is an armed robber. The man was acting alone and seeking to rob the pastor of his phone. The Fulani never stated his intentions to act on behalf of a militant Islamic group with an agenda against Christians.

The pastor on the other hand imputed anti religious intentions on the Fulani. An immediate attack on the pastor is more effective than demanding for the phone
