Politics / Petrol, Electricity Price Hike Indications Of Buhari Working For Nigerians – APC by PMBNG(m): 2:33pm On Sep 03, 2020
The All Progressive Congress APC says the recent increase in prices of petrol and electricity tariff are Indications that President Muhammadu Buhari led administration is working for Nigerians.

The ruling party stated this while reacting to the call by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP demanding reversal of the decision by the government.

In a Wednesday statement by Yekini Nabena, its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, the party lambasted the PDP for introducing fuel subsidy regime in the country and diverted attention by calling on the opposition party to return alleged stolen wealth of Nigerians.

“For successive PDP governments that foisted on the country a corruption-tainted fuel subsidy regime, we call on the PDP to surprise itself and indeed Nigerians by cajoling its cronies who ran the subsidy rackets – many of them in hiding abroad – to return our stolen commonwealth in their possession,” the party said.

“Under the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. The tortuous fuel queues as a result of biting scarcities are gone.

“The reviewed petroleum products pricing template has resulted in a more transparent, efficient and realistic pricing system for petroleum products and also resulted in constant availability of fuel nationwide.

“The pricing template now reflects competitive and market driven components which is supported by the citizenry.

“In an effort by this administration to put an end to estimated and arbitrary billing for electricity, President Buhari recently directed a nationwide mass metering programme for electricity consumers in the country.

“For the PDP that is only concerned with pushing the interests of its few cronies over the general interest and welfare of the citizenry, we dont expect the PDP to grasp the import of this landmark presidential directive which aside improving electricity and service delivery, is also protecting the poor and vulnerable Nigerians from increased electricity tariff and arbitrary/estimated billings.

“Commendably, the federal government is already working to ensure that Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) commit to increasing the number of hours of electricity supply every day and also improve on their quality of service.

“Perhaps the PDP is also unaware, that the current administration has approved a one-year waiver of import levy on electricity meters, so that Nigerians who do not have meters can be supplied as early as possible at a reasonable cost.

“The APC calls on the PDP to wake up to the new Nigeria were the government works for the citizens not a few interests,” the party added.

Politics / Stop Online Complaints, Lead Street Protest, Nigerians Tell Atiku by PMBNG(m): 1:22pm On Sep 03, 2020
Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, has been told to stop condemning and rejecting perceived maladministration of President Muhammadu Buhari online.

Nigerians on social media, particularly Twitter, on Thursday made the request in reaction to the rejection of electricity tariff by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election.

Popularly known as Atiku, Mr Abubakar said the recent hike in electricity tariff was ill-advised and ill-timed. But Nigerians on the micro-blogging site called on him to lead a protest if he is dissatisfied with the increase.

A similar hike in price of petroleum products in 2012 forced opposition parties including Mr Buhari into the streets nationwide demanding reversal.

Below are few response to the tweet of the former vice president.

Politics / Buhari Blames Middlemen For High Prices Of Food Items by PMBNG(m): 11:38am On Sep 03, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari has blamed middlemen for the high prices of food items in the country.

The president however said his administration is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure the crash of high prices of food items in the country.

Mr Buhari who gave the assurance on Thursday in series of tweets, said he has ordered the release of the 30,000 tons of maize from the national reserve to animal feed producers.

He also said the recent price hike of food items nationwide won’t last long as his administration and food producers are in talks.

This is coming after the All Progressive Congress (APC) led government increased the price of petrol and electricity tariff.

“To ease the current high cost of poultry production, I have approved the release of 30,000 tons of maize from the national reserves, to animal feed producers,” Mr Buhari said.

“We are very mindful of the challenge of high food prices, at a time when the economy is already in a slowdown caused by the global coronavirus situation, and are doing everything in our power to bring down the prices of food items across the country.

“Let me assure Nigerians that this situation of spiraling food prices will be a transient one.

“We are also engaging with food producers associations and groups to tackle the issue of exploitative behaviour by middlemen and other actors, which is one of the factors responsible for the high food prices being experienced,” he added.

Politics / Atiku Condemns Increase On Electricity Tariff, Silent On Petrol Price Hike by PMBNG(m): 9:58am On Sep 03, 2020
Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, has rejected the increase in electricity tariff enforced nationwide on Tuesday.

Mr Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was silent on the price hike of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly known as petrol.

“I reject the increased electricity tariffs. Coming out of the lockdown, Nigerians need a stimulus, not an impetuous disregard for the challenges they face,” the PDP chieftain popularly known as Atiku said in a Thursday tweet.

“Many Nigerians have not earned an income for months, due to no fault of theirs. This increase is ill-timed and ill-advised,” he added.

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had yesterday increased the price of the product, a similar action he kicked against during his days in the opposition.

Meanwhile, in its reaction, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the increase in prices, saying it has began consulting state organs of the organization on the next line of action.

Politics / NLC Rejects Hike In Petrol Price, Electricity Tariff As Protest Looms by PMBNG(m): 8:20am On Sep 03, 2020
There may be demonstration nationwide as the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday rejected the hike in prices of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly known as petrol and electricity tariff.

Ayuba Wabba, the president of the NLC while rejecting the increase yesterday said his organisation has began consulting state organs on the next line of action.

While the price of petrol was increased to N162 yesterday, electricity tariff which doubled more than twice was enforced nationwide on Tuesday. Several groups including the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the increase, calling on the All Progressive Congress (APC) led administration headed by President Muhammadu Buhari to backtrack on its decision.

“It is like Nigerians are being taken for a ride,” Mr Wabba told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja yesterday.

“The increase in price of petroleum is like adding salt to injury.

“The increase in price of petroleum has happened now more than three times in three months.

“Only yesterday they hiked the tariff of electricity.

“The organised labour therefore rejects the increase in price of the product in the strongest terms.

“At the end of the day, Nigerians are becoming poorer and poorer.

“In fact, many people are already on the edge.

“Many workers are already on the edged.

“Certainly, we cannot guarantee industrial peace and harmony, and we will have to call our organs and we will have to also react, but we reject it in its entirety.

“They have betrayed the trust of Nigerians.

“For Nigerians to be protected against the economic challenge that is affecting us,” the NLC president said.

Politics / 2023 Presidency: Kalu Meets IBB by PMBNG(m): 3:38pm On Aug 31, 2020
Orji Kalu, the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, on Monday met with Ibrahim Babangida, former military head of state.

The move, TODAY POLITICS learnt might not be unconnected to consultation on his alleged presidential ambition in the next general election.

With the expiration of the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, there have been calls for the South-East region, where Kalu hails from, to succeed the Nigerian leader who is on his second term.

The former Abia State governor is a chieftain of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) whom Northern Youths have vowed to support should he indicate interest in seeking the top position in the country.

Although the party is yet to zone its presidential ticket, it is widely believed it will look the way of the south and Mr Kalu is not the only southern politician scheming for the top job.

Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State and a national leader of the APC is also being speculated to be interested. He is yet to say so but his actions politically point to that direction.

Politics / Ganduje Should Be Sentenced To Death For Receiving Kickbacks – Activist by PMBNG(m): 9:16am On Aug 30, 2020
Aisha Yesufu, a co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, says Umar Ganduje, the governor of Kano State ought to be sentenced to death for receiving kickbacks.

Mr Ganduje, in 2018, was seen in series of video clips receiving wraps of dollar notes and pocketing them in his Agbada attire. The action earned him the sobriquet, Gandollar, by critics.

Daily Nigerian, an online news medium which published the clips reported that the Kano helmsman received the funds amounting to $5million as kickbacks from project contractors in the state.

In his reaction, Ganduje denied receiving the bribe, saying the videos were doctored, a contrary view held by experts who reviewed the clips. Although the matter is still in court, the governor enjoys immunity from prosecution until the expiration of his tenure.

Last week, he expressed readiness to sign the death sentence of a musician in the state said to have blasphemed against prophet Mohammed, venerated by Muslims. This angered Yesufu who said the governor ought to be sentenced to death if judged using Sharia law that was used on the Kano musician.

She canvassed for the application of the Sharia law on the governor caught taking bride rather than the Nigerian constitutional immunity which he is enjoying.

“Ganduje was caught on camera allegedly collecting bribe. In sharia law any gift to public servant belongs to the State talkless of one caught collecting bribe,” Mrs Yesufu said in a Friday tweet.

“There is no immunity in sharia law. Ganduje should be the one sentenced to death not signing death warrant,” she added.

Politics / Why PDP Is Nigeria’s Most Useless Opposition Party – Lawyer by PMBNG(m): 5:50am On Aug 30, 2020
Inibehe Effiong, Human Right Lawyer, has described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the most useless opposition party in the country.

The remarks of the legal practitioner is contained in a statement he authored yesterday.

Mr Effiong was reacting to the seeming silence of federal lawmakers of the former ruling but now opposition party at the National Assembly. He cited the controversial CAMA 2020 law already assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari which some Nigerians are kicking against and the social media bill awaiting endorsement by the Nigerian Senate despite rejection by Nigerians, as indications of how useless the party is.

He said the PDP, which according to him, has left its duty as an opposition for activists should no longer be taken seriously as there exist no difference between it and the now ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

“A so-called opposition party that keeps outsourcing its role to activists shouldn’t be taken seriously,” Mr Effiong said.

“When the contentious CAMA was passed, where were PDP lawmakers? NASS is planning to pass anti-social media bill, what are opposition caucuses in both Houses doing to stop it?

“President Buhari has been borrowing money recklessly, what has members of the opposition done about it? A serious opposition can truncate government policies in parliament, even though it is in the minority. There are ways of doing this, including filibustering, walk out, etc.

“No opposition party is more useless than PDP. Actually, PDP is not an opposition party. It is just a group of people who are waiting for another opportunity to resume looting at the federal level. You accuse Ganduje of playing politics of religion, how about the Zamfara governor?

“A party that lost a national election should have made spirited efforts to win the sympathy of the people. But their members and supporters are busy insulting people for voting Buhari instead of their candidates which they consider to be lesser evils. Is that how to win election?

“Since 2015, what has the PDP as a political party done differently from the APC in States under their control? Which PDP governor has complied with FOI requests? Which PDP controlled State has organized credible local government elections? What are they doing differently?

“The corruption of the APC does not justify the rotteness of the PDP. Both parties are one and the same. The way they decamp so easily and exchange candidates buttresses this fact. They don’t hate the stealing in Aso Rock, they hate the fact that they’re not the ones stealing,” the lawyer added.

The Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State chapter has directed its members to boycott the press conference of Femi Fani-Kayode.

The directive is contained in a Friday statement, advising members not to attend any press conference involving the former minister who announced his presence in the state yesterday evening.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had been touring states of the federation including those belongings to the opposition.

When he arrived in Cross River State, Fani-Kayode held a press conference towards the end of his tour. During the briefing, he verbally ridiculed a journalist who inquired the financial expenditures of his trips nationwide.

He has however apologised for his outburst.

Politics / Nigerians Turn Buhari’s Twitter Page Into Portal For Follow Backs by PMBNG(m): 5:01pm On Aug 27, 2020
The Twitter page of President Muhammadu Buhari has been turned to a channel for follow backs on the micro-blogging site.

Created late 2014, the president’s account @MBuhari, is used for propagating the policies, initiatives and activities of the present administration. The president, after seeking the top office thrice but failed, defeated then incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan, who sought re-election in 2015.

His victory at the polls became possible after opposition parties merged their political strength to birth the now ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). He was reelected last year for a second term which will wind down in 2023.

Lately, TODAY POLITICS has observed the increasing attitude of Nigerians, on Twitter, using the president’s page for canvassing and gaining followers.

Although, the trend has been on for sometime now, it is on the rise each time the Nigerian leader sends out tweets about the activities of his administration.

Today, the most followed African leader on the micro-blogging site tweeted about the re-election of Akinwumi Adesina, president of the African Development Bank (AFDB). Buhari congratulated him for his victory which he said was well deserved.

Before he could end his congratulatory message, in series of tweets, Thursday afternoon, Nigerians online at the time have already flooded the page with the comment, ‘IFB’, indicating their willingness to follow back anyone who follows their own twitter page.

At the last review by this reporter, 90 percent of the over 400 comments on page were campaigning for followers and one wonders what might occur in his next tweet.

Politics / FFK: I Hereby Withdraw The Word “Stupid” That I Used On Journalist, I Regret It by PMBNG(m): 8:31am On Aug 26, 2020
Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of Aviation has apologised for insulting a journalist in Calabar, Cross River State capital, last week.

The apology of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP chieftain comes barely a day after he remained defiant, oiling his ego over the unfortunate outburst wherein he described the media practitioner as being very stupid.

A question by the journalist, Eyo Charles, attached to one of the national dailies, on who was bankrolling his tours across states of the federation necessitated the outburst. He had vowed yesterday not to apologise for his verbal attacks despite criticism that greeted it when a video clip of what transpired surfaced online.

But in a statement this morning, the former minister said he regretted using the word stupid and have withdrawn it after being advised to do so. He also denied sending one of his security aides to interrogate the journalist.

“I met with my advisors & I wish to say the following. I hereby withdraw the word “stupid” which I used in my encounter with a journalist in Calabar. I have many friends in the media who I offended by losing my cool & using such words. I hereby express my regrets for doing so,” the PDP chieftain said.

“I do however wish to state categorically that no threat of physical harm was ever made to the journalist in question and neither did I send anyone to threaten him. Anyone that says otherwise is lying and I challenge them to bring the proof.

“I would never seek to physically harm a journalist. For the last 30 years I have defended & worked with journalists & fought for the right of freedom of expression. I am also very close to many in that profession. I would be the last to seek to disparage those that are honorable and noble within its ranks.

“I hope that this will assuage the pain and anger of anyone that was hurt or offended by this ugly episode. I have now put this matter behind me and moved on. Now my tour of the South continues. Moving to another state today!” he added.

Politics / I Won’t Apologise For Insulting A Journalist In Calabar – Fani-kayode by PMBNG(m): 5:47pm On Aug 25, 2020
Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Aviation Minister, says he will not apologise for insulting a journalist in Calabar, Cross State capital.

Mr Fani-Kayode, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had visited the state and spent a week touring project sites in the state. At the end of the tour, he held a press conference where he praised Cross River governor, Ben Ayade, for doing much despite the lean resources accruing to the state.

As the press briefing was about coming to an end, the last question asked by a journalist from a national daily who inquired to know the source of his tour expenditures nationwide angered the former minister who then insulted the inquisitive questioner as being “very stupid.”

Defending his outburst, the PDP chieftain, who has toured several states of the federation, said although the journalist apologised which he has accepted, the question was been sponsored by his critics who used the journalist in a bid to embarrass him.

In a Tuesday statement, Fani-Kayode described the question as insulting on his personality and he has no apology to offer for his reaction while pledging his continuous respect for media practitioners.

Sharing a video clip of the outburst on social media, he said, “I have no apology to offer for it.”

“Those of them that know me or worked with or for me over the last 30 years can attest to that. However there is a distinction between asking a question & offering an insult,” his statement partly read.

“This is all the more so when it is clear that the assertion was sponsored and engineered by my political enemies who wanted to use the young man to insult and embarrass me and question my integrity. Well they got more than they bargained for.

“I repeat this was not a question but an assertion and an gratuitous insult and I will not accept that from any man born of woman. Thank you,” he added.

Nasir El-rufai, governor of Kaduna State, has been challenged to go ahead with the defamation suit he threatened to file against petitioners who demanded his exclusion at the 2020 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Mr El-rufai was initially billed to speak on Insecurity at the event which will also be held virtually, but a petition to the body of legal practitioners led to him being disinvited.

While reaction to the withdrawal of his invitation which his son said was useless, the governor said it was unfair and threatened to seek legal redress.

“The defamatory statements in the petition is another matter entirely, and they will get the appropriate response,” he said in a statement authored by Muyiwa Adekeye, his special adviser on media and communications.

Open Bar Initiative, one of the groups which signed the petition seeking his disengagement, has challenged him to go ahead and not back down in seeking redress in court.

In a Friday statement posted on its social media account, the advocacy group, described the threat as laughable, saying they were waiting as he will be exposed more in court.

“At best, this is laughable. Even at a time that he is expected to be sombre, he is dishing out threats for an imaginative “defamation,” the group said on Twitter.

“Well, bring it on, the Court room will not contain the lawyers for the Defendant & more will be revealed about him. Shame!”

The National President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Paul Usoro, has apologised to Nasir El-rufai, governor of Kaduna State, over his dis-invitation as a panelists in its 2020 Annual General Conference.

Mr El-rufai was earlier billed to deliver a key note during the gathering which will also be held virtually. Yesterday his invitation was withdrawn and this has elicited reactions from Nigerians who described it as embarrassing. Bashir El-rufai, son of the Kaduna helmsman, in his reaction described it as a useless invitation.

But in a letter to the Director General of the Nigerian Governors Forum (PGF) today, Mr Usoro apologised for the development, saying it was beyond his capacity to halt him being delisted.
