Nissan xtrail 2003
Once I put on the ac the temperature indicator rises, mostly when in traffic or idle after about 10-20mins, car starts to jack if i want to speed when the road is clear to move.

Added coolant to the radiator, flushed/steam washed the condenser and radiator.

Could a faulty cold start switch be responsible or one of the 2 knock/starter sensors?

Check, and make sure the air con fan is working, when the system is switched on. Also make sure the compressor isn't binding. If it is, it'll place a fair bit of load on the engine, once the magnetic clutch is engaged.

Thanks for your swift response, fan is working, I guess the issue must have started when the noisy pulley was replaced.

Bro, I'm referring to the aircon compressor, or pump. This is the component that has the aircon suction and discharge pipe connections.

Thanks, but I guess I didn't phrase my question well. I meant what is compressor binding? What is to be done when the compressor binds (hope that's the correct verb).

Air con condensers employ the use of pistons, arranged in a rotary layout. If the rings dry out, they can stick. The same goes for the central shaft. I've ovserved a lot of Nigerian mechanics simply add R134-A.

Oil is meant to be added too, else the internals of the compressor dry out. This will cause the compressor to bind, when the magnetic clutch is engaged.

Thanks, travelled just got back. The bearing in the compressor was changed.

Both my mechanic & electrican lost it as regards the technical term binding, just read your explanation on binding, will inform them and thereafter share the result with the house.

In addition, they adviced I buy a new 3 cell radiator since am using a 2 cell which looks ok and free of dirt both in and out.

Please disregard that advice with regards replacing your radiator.

OP, do 2 things first before you continue.
Change the radiator cap and next bleed air from the coolant/radiator(If your mechanic knows how).

I'm experiencing the same with my EOD 2003 Honda Accord. Each time i turn on the AC, for about 30mins, the temperature will start to rise. I've added coolant, flushed the radiator and even replaced the cap of my Radiator, still its the same thing. And once the temperature begins to rise, the rate at which fuel is being consumed is very alarming. Please, i need you guys to suggest what to do. Now, i can't drive with my AC on. I need help and a i would appreciate if anyone can recomment a good mechanic that would help look into this. I use a 2-cell radiator. Thanks!

. Drive down to Honda workshop, they should have one in lagos, I'm sure u will find a lasting solution there.

I experienced similar problem with my Honda hala but it stopped as soon as I changed the radiator.

Hello Guys,
There are a few things you should understand before spending your cash on unnecessary repairs. The purpose of the calibrated temperature gauge on your dash is to tell you the engine coolant temperature. What do you mean when you say "the temperature starts rising" ? From what temperature to what temperature? Look at your car manual if you have one. The Normal working temperature is a 'RANGE OF VALUES' from COLD to around 110 degrees Celcius.
The engine temperature should rise on application of a load e.g compressor, up hill driving etc. If you have not removed the thermostat( which I do not advice), and you have a good coolant/water ratio at least 30:70, all other components working well, your engine temperature should stay between 70 and 100 degrees on application of load. Some cars like the Peugoet brands must reach 89 degrees before the thermostat opens up to allow circulation of coolant. In such cars the temperature can rise to 100 degrees on application of AC, and in slow moving traffic. This is very normal.

Note: If you use 100% water as coolant, its going to boil off. Not advisable.
Changing to a 3 cell radiator is simply increasing the coolant volume and the surface area of the heat exchanger. Helps too but not always necessary.

Watch your guage and find out what temperature the indicator rises to. Avoid the RED zone grin grin.

Brother I drive the same car and at one point had the same problem. I just changed the relay for the AC radiator fan, this can be found in the engine fuse box and u can easily do this. I bought the used relay for #300 and its been a year since yet it still works.

The reason you experience this is because your 2nd fan does not come on as supposed when the AC does and that's what this relay switch does.

To identify the relay open the engine fuse box and use the circuit diagram on the cover to identify the ac relay. It's an Omron brand relay and it the same with the compressor relay.

Hope this helps, please don't allow mechanics handle your car until u do this. my 2 cents

Just an update

Changed both the radiator and gasket to have peace of mind.
Later realized on the new radiator, one hose was touching the silencer underneath and another hose's clip wasn't tighten properly.

@Siena please I have two temperature sensors on this car.
1. A single pin temp switch
2. The cold start switch (css) also serving as a temp switch, happens to be the default temp sensor, which got spoilt (just noticed temp on dash wasn't changing over time) b4 all these temp issue started.
The electrician now connected a wire from the CSS to the single wire temp sensor and got response on the dash.

My observation is, when I am connected to the single switch, the temp monitor on the dash rises faster and high but the css doesn't notify me on time or doesn't send an alarming signal like the single wire sensor. Which do u advise I stick to?

Also there is a sound coming from the engine, I was told it will go with time, it's auto adjust. This sound comes on when u start the car and goes away after like 2-4 secs. But now when the engine is hot and with time while on high speed, I now hear this strange sound.

Learnt it's still the adjuster which they guessed should have been placed in oil while working on the engine (gasket replacement) and maybe a slacked chain also.

What is the fastest remedy to this adjuster/noise issue please?

I just experienced this yesterday. Mine is a V6. The temperature rises and immediately I turn off the ac, it comes down and never happens again.

check your Ac fan ,it capacity to blow is reducing

No. It works with the relay. In another thread here, someone said he changed the relay and the overheating stopped. I will check that too. Thanks.

I can clearly remember the circumstances that led to this in mine. Actually, the condenser fan relay was bad and thus my air con wasn't chilling. As part of troubleshooting and what I read on the net, I switched the radiator fan and condenser fan relays and that was when the overheat thing started. It started immediately I did this switch and turned on the AC which was now chilling. So I'd say it's your radiator fan relay that needs to be changed.
Do let us know how it goes
