No one forgot to include there's a charge for account balance enquiry. I don't know where the charges come from but its either from GTBank or the US bank ATM you used.

webstradamus: Just in case anyone is still looking for a cost-effective (or should I say cost-free grin) way of transferring money from their GTB account to their US bank account, simply go to any Walmart and purchase a money order in your name using your GTB Naira Mastercard. You can then pay in the money order to your US bank account. You do not incur any charges from GTB (since it is a POS transaction) and the money order only costs $0.70 (70 cents). If you ask me I'd say this is the cheapest and fastest way to transfer funds to the US from Naija. However, maximum you can go on a single money order is $1000 so if you wanted to transfer say $5000, you would have to purchase 5 money orders (total cost will be $3.50). Imagine how much savings you would be making when compared to doing a wire transfer! Plus you get your money instantly!!

I think its from US banks. Last year, When I used my Wells Fargo ATM card on a Bank of America ATM machine to check my balance; I was surprise when $2 was debited from my account just for checking my account balance on a different bank ATM. They also charge me money anytime money is transfer to my account from another bank. I wonder if Checking account balance with another bank ATM and transferring of money to your account is still free in Nigeria. Anyway, most American banks are crooks. Most Americans don't trust their banks because they believe the banks make lots of money out of them.

Its free in Nigeria to Withdraw,Check balance or transfer money from any bank ATM. But here in the US nothing goes for free oh! Some banks even charge as much as $8 to deposit your PayCheck into the same bank. I tire oh!

If you have the cash before you travelling date why not just bring it along because of GTBank exchange rate? But better still you can leave it in your GTB account then come here with your master card. You simply walk into any WalMart store and tell them you want to buy money order of $1,000. It cost just 60cent for the money order. Since you'll be needing $2,000 worth then you buy 2 because the maximum you can buy is $1,000. So the 2 costs just $1.20. You'll by swiping your GTB master card in the walmart store. Then you take it to your new bank account and give them to deposit it. Simple!

Thank pally, so apart of $1.20 charges @ walmart, I hope Gtbank will not charge me a kobo. The reason why I don't want to come with the cash is that I don't want to be tempted to start buying things I don't need b4 school will resume and also which america bank can I open an account with very easy, I want bank that is very ok in terms of charges Oº°˚˚°ºo cos I intend to open an account immediately I land in Obamaland. Thanks

No GTBank wouldn't charge you. Wellsfargo is okay. With as little as $25 you can open an account. Although, your school be in partnership with a bank to give students a checking account that don't charge you monthly.

You CANNOT make a TRANSFER. What you can do is purchase MoneyOrder at any WalMart or other retails stores with your GTB card, then you deposit the MoneyOrder into your US bank account. The maximum is $1,000 per transaction/Order, but you can make as many orders as possible but each costs 65Cents.
how do i buy the moneyorder online. I loggined in to their site and i saw moneygram and xoom and nothing like purchase moneyorder. Can i get it from their store in Nigeria.

@Webstradamus you're a real blessing smiley Thanks!
@All: Please I have a quick question which anyone who has used the GTB Naira Mastercard in the US may be able to answer. Does the exchange rate for POS transactions/ATM withdrawals fluctuate or is there a fixed exchange rate (as I think there should be)? If there is, how much (in Naira) does GTB exchange 1 USD for? And if it fluctuates (as would be expected), is it possible to get this information from GTB? I have scoured their website endlessly and have just stumbled on this rather interesting link : https://twitter.com/gtbank/status/273835591664300032 Thank you!

2-3 business days, I would say. It will depend largely on the bank, though. It is virtually processed like cheques.

I am not sure you can purchase a money order from Nigeria but you should probably check with the banks. We used to have (probably still do have) postal orders which were/are sold in post offices and can be used in place of money orders/cheques.

Sure it does fluctuate. The exchange rate for the day you make the transaction is what you'll be charged. To get the current exchange rate you'll call GTConnect.

In between you're beautiful. wink Good looking.

I usually go for money order because the charge is only $0.70c but since the CBN cap came in I have not really used it.

Has any one used Cashier's cheque of late to purchase above $500 from a naira account? Its the only option left at $4 per transaction

Hi there,
Is this still valid? And I was wondering if the money order will be processed at the official USD/NGN exchange rate or black-market rate will be used by GTBank.

PS. I'm also aware that GT MasterCard has a monthly fx limit of $2000 presently

Has anybody tried to withdraw large sum of money from their GTB naira mastercard in the US? if not do you know a cheap way of sending money to the US from naija becos the last time i received money through GTB to my american account they charged us over $40 commission just for a small amount & i still paid the bank another $25. if they deposit the money in my GTB account in naija can i use my card to cash it? Thanks
if you have registered for BVN, you can withdraw with it.
