A friend sent this to me, and I would like to share it with you guys. Please let us be careful.

My Bad Experience with Quack Tracking Companies in Nigeria

My experience might sound like a mere movie but it actually happened to me last Monday 11th of August, 2008.

At precisely 3.30pm, I was accosted by a gang of armed robbers all masked with assorted guns. They quickly pushed me to the back seat of my car. While all these happened, they didn't say a word to me. I was trembling with fear begging them not to harm me, one of them collected my car keys from me and quickly drove off with me at the back seat saying my last prayers.

We drove for about 20 minutes until they demanded that I strip off my clothes, I did that with the understanding that if I didn’t do what they wanted I could end up being killed. All I could do at that time was pray for God to let this cup of anxiety of death pass me by.

After a long drive, they demanded that I get down from the car with only my underpants on. I quickly did as directed with thanksgiving after which they drove off with top speed. I quickly got help to cover up my unclothedness and quickly got a GSM phone to demobilize the car. On sending the demobilizing command to my car, I discovered that the phone number of the device was no longer available (apparently, the tracking unit in my car had been disconnected by those who had stolen my car). I called my wife to contact the tracking company and make a formal complaint while I rushed to make a case with the police. After a while, my wife confirmed to me that the phone number kept ringing without an answer and worst still, the address on their contact card was non-existent. At that time all I had left in my thoughts was to say “Thank God for saving me”.

I have taken the pains to investigate to know where I went wrong in installing a tracker in my car. I discovered that most tracking companies in Nigeria are not registered by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to do business in Nigeria, they are mere dupes who take advantage of cheap tracking units from china to extort money from desperate Nigerians.

I implore all of you to be careful about installers who will tell you their units are one off payments or charge you less than N70,000 to install the unit, these dupes have alliances with those who rob us on the highways.

Shockingly, I also discovered that some GSM Telecommunication companies have Vehicle tracking companies registered on their websites. This is very misleading as most of those companies don’t have NCC certifications to do business in Nigeria.

I implore NCC to take serious actions to avert these illegal companies from exploiting Nigerians of their hard earned monies and exposing us all to risks of our lives.

A realy sorry about your experience. I hope the car was comprehensively insured??

I, for one, am really not interested in this tracking rubbish. My own way of looking at it is that I do not want a recovered car!! So the only solution is to have comprehensive cover. With that its not my business if the car is recovered or not. And I even get the opportunity to get a new car!! grin

BUt all the same, sorry oo!! embarassed

What is the Govt doing? this is how we can help ourselves

@fotodaddy
I agree with you 100%! What if the thieves strip down your vehicle after they've stolen it? Will the tracker help you out then?

Comprehensive insurance is the way to go. If your car gets stolen, no need fretting about the condition it'll be if it ever gets recovered. Admittedly there is a delay for the insurance guys to finish their investigation, but at least you'll get paid.

I didnt even see that angle cos thats not something that happens here but you are right.

But My thinking is that in the Nigerian setting, will you place so much reliance on technology that itself relies on the GSM networks?? What happens when the network is down ?? No tracking thats what.

We just arent ready for this technology. It requires a lot more infrastructure.

All the same, @poster, I hope your car was insured. Thank God for mercies. Sorry OO

@ poster,
I thank God for His mercies oh. By the way, what car was it? I am also a culprit of this armed robbery thing. I say the only way out is public execution of armed robbers. They do no deserve to live. Make them no make me DPO or IG of police. Comprehensive insurance is good but in my experience, i almost lost my life. Can insurance bring a young man back to his pregnant wife? Answer that Nairalanders.
Kill them all!!!!!!!

My brother, The Lord that gave you that car will definately give u another one. Let them go with it so far you are alive. It would have been a different story if your life went with it.

My neighbour was not that lucky, few days ago people trailed him and snuffed off his life. They did not even go with the car at last.

I am really sad to hear this. It is so sad that a human life can be equated to the value of a car!!! God help us!!

All these vehicle tracking stuff is bullshit. Do you know that with a GPS jammer that cost $45 (less than 10k) and or a phone jammer costing the same amount will render all this tracking devices useless. Giving them unlimited time to cannibalize ur vehicle for spare parts or for the smart theives strip the vehicle for the tracker.

What more with a frequency scanner costing $200 in the right hands that tracker will be history.

Best bet, insure ur moto

People are differently stories to tell about the GPS Car tracker. My friend's wife was attacked while she was taking her child to school right inside our estate in Port Harcourt. At gun point, she was forced out of the car along with her child and the attackers zoomed off with the car. She called her husband immediately and he started tracking the car and discovered that the thieves were heading for Imo state. He alerted a few friends in Owerri and waited till the car got to the city centre before demobilising it. The idiots were trapped right in traffic in front of Assumpta Cathedral...they came out and started pushing the car and took to their heels when they sighted some policemen. I know a couple of others who recovered theirs also.

No need to put the cart before the horse.
Just insure the goddamn ride & the fecking insureco would install the tracking device in your car.

Thanks.

Am quite sorry for your experience...I will blame the installer for not always checking on his his to know when it failed and go for corrections.. Most f us forget that car tracking is not insurance. After installing a tracker on your vehicle try to call the tracker number from time to time or when in an unsecured zone..If your tracker dos not ring you call your installer to come and check it out , you dont wait for tragedy to struck before you check your tracker...

as am typing now i am checking my assets to ascertain its operation
