I don't know the name of this road but it is under construction and 90% completed. The surprising thing is that as the road is ongoing so is most plots on it being built up with solid structures. It cuts into Nekede area and the area where multiple highrise diaspora estate is being built. The work on the estate is solid but slow. I was prevented from taking pictures by plain clothed policemen on duty there.

While it will be absurd to attribute everything in New Owerri to Rochas, it is rather wicked to say nothing was built by him despite seeing pictures of Hero's square area, Heros apartments, Ochiedike Road area, Multiple bridges linking old and New Owerri, Dee Sam road and dozens of new dual roads within New Owerri area which some are still under construction like the one I posted above. Let your conscience always be the judge. Owerri today is leaving the typical Nigerian looks and it takes a good leader to do that. Imo State has little resources to work with but someone did wonders with the little in less than four years and it is not limited to Owerri but all nooks and crannies of the State. A wise man will accept that much has been done while a lot is yet to be done but the improvement is very positive and rather miraculous to me.

oga, do you even know the boundaries of new owerri?

Dee sam mbakwe road and heroes square with the twin culvert you call bridge are all in the warehouse area, not new owerri.

the culvert is a shame, tiny and poorly done so that flood water will leap over it, get the real defi ition of bridge first. The culvert and Ochiedike road are is in old owerre.

Stop deceiving us and show us where my governor of three years build, not achievement of former governors of imo state.

If indeed you are from Imo State and have been to Owerri in the past one month, you should have known that the bridges are now 4 and not 2 as you wrote above. What is your definition of bridge and its difference with culvert? The boundary of old and New Owerri today is Dee Sam road. In the past it was Nworie River.

I wrote earlier that Rochas did not build everything in New Owerri but he changed its face with provision of structures, refurbishing of old structures like the States secretariat and provision of several new roads widening the landmass and making available more free lands for development as seen in some of the pictures I posted earlier. Can you deny the fact that Ochiedike road was non-existent before 2012/2013?

I'm so sure that by the time I display IMSU junction here in December, your tune will change that it has always been in existence before Okorocha.

The half-for-do culverts for drainage system meant to send Orlu flood into this hole dug by Okorocha govt near St Joseph's Catholic Church in the centre of Orlu. Flooding problems here worsened after these.
This is what B2mario mistakenly took for drainage system completed in Orlu. Instead, what is required is a less than 800 meter gutter/duct to channel the floods to the nearest valley. That is no duty of the federal government. IF THE GUTTER/DUCT TO THE VALLEY IS NOT DONE, THE ROADS IN ORLU SHALL BE GONE VERY SOON - LIKE OTHERS BEFORE THEM.

This your photo pre-dates 2011 and it has outlived its usefulness. B2mario's own is more recent and shows that an attempt has been made by Okorocha led Government. Maybe the attempt wasn't successful but I want you to direct this issue to the relevant quarters which is FG led by Goodluck Jonathan. The contract was awarded by FG but seemed abandoned which lead to Okorocha involving the State funds as a palliative. I hope you will be courageous enough to address the FG or you will act like the typical Igbo betrayers and cowards.

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/10/in-orlu-flood-sends-5000-packing/

FOR the people of Uzoubi, Umuna, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State what began as a small season challenge  has today snowballed into a huge disaster.
Trouble began in 1984, when  Umusasa, one of the five villages in Umuna experienced its first flooding. In 1986, the flood spilled over, destroying farmlands and crops, buildings collapsed, domestic animals drowned and household furniture were destroyed.
Today, Umuna has become a pilgrimage centre of sorts where people go to reflect on the disastrous work of nature. To some scholars, the community has become an excursion site where they see and record their findings for the advancement of knowledge. To yet another group of visitors, the flood site is a tourist attraction, a seven-day wonder and  people are simply amazed at how  residential and commercial buildings were taken over by flood and their occupants summarily sacked.
Uzoubi, Umuna, is best described as a community in the valley but presently houses some of the major landmarks associated with Orlu local council area. Apart from being thickly populated, this troubled community boasts of the magnificent and soul-uplifting Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Orie Ugwu and Orlu International Markets, as well as Evan Enwerem University Teaching Hospital.
On June 27, 2005, the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Boniface C. Okereke, the President General, Chief Chris Uzoagba and Secretary General, Chief Bob Onyeje, sent a letter to one of their own and the immediate past governor of the state, Chief Achike Udenwa, titled:  “Flood water claims human life in Uzoubi-Umuna”.

Residential buildings sacked by flood in Umuna.
This was their complaint: “The yearly event in Uzoubi-Umuna for the past 18 years has registered its arrival this year with a claim of the life of a child of about 12 months. This time, a son of Mr. Raymond Duruiheoma, a native of Atta in Njaba Local Government Area, residing at 2, Duruaku Street, Uzoubi-Umuna. This incident happened 12th June, 2005. Properties lost by the residents of the said building are estimated in millions of Naira”.
They also told Udenwa in the said letter that barely two weeks after another 18-hour torrential rain hit the community, adding that the additional water over ran the entire community. They mentioned the worst hit areas as the royal father’s palace, Duruaku Street, Umusasa Road, Egbunine Street, Nwangaji Street, Umudiato Road, Ebenator Road, Amaigbo Road, Central School 1 premises, Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church premises and Umuorji Street.
Explaining how the 12-month old boy died in the flood, the royal father said: “On this fateful day, the flood was beyond the control of the dwarf walls, as it pulled down the perimeter wall and covered all the rooms downstairs at 1 Eze Okereke Road”.
An enraged traditional ruler told Vanguard Metro  that “Chief Udenwa did nothing to ameliorate the plight of his brothers in Uzoubi-Umuna until he left office”. He recalled with grief how perimeter fencing of several buildings was pulled down by the angry flood.
“About 10,000 residential and commercial buildings are submerged yearly in flood and properties conservatively estimated at billions of Naira have been lost to the flood. Sheep, goats, rams, dogs, chickens and other domestic birds were drowned”, the royal father lamented.
He recalled that the attempt by the past administration to give access roads to Orlu International Market and the Teaching Hospital without defined flood discharge points has rendered many living at the East-end of the International market homeless. The same poor planning affected the construction work at Amaigbo Road, hence the over flooding of the Catholic Church premises and the buildings around it.
Another pathetic aspect of the flood disaster is that of the  primary school built in 1919 by the Catholic Church which is on the verge of being  closed down. If this  happens, what is the fate  of the children of school age in this area is the question begging for answer.
Eze Okereke disclosed that early 2005, FERMA attempted to rehabilitate the Amaigbo Road but the angry flood sacked them and the job has remained unattended to till date, despite the ray of hope ignited in 2009 by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).
According to a BPP document, BPP/S.1/Vol.VII/09/059, dated May 21, 2009 and captioned “Certificate of no objection for award of contract”, the BPP stated: “Having examined your request and all the documents forwarded confirms that the project has satisfied all due process requirements for issuance of no objection for the award of the contract”.
While giving the project name as “construction of Umuna Erosion Control Works at Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State”, BPP gave the name of the project contractor and cost as Messrs C.L.S. Limited and N119,632,175.30 respectively.
The BPP document which was signed by the Director General, Engr. Emeka M. Ezeh and Engr. Nebolisa O. Emodi, disclosed that the source of funding is the N120 million under the Ecological Fund as approved by Mr. President, while the implementing Ministry/Agency is the National Committee on Ecological Problems (NCEP)/Anambra-Imo River Basin Development Authority.
The question now is: When will this project, which was approved in May 21, 2009, take off? Until the project  commences and is completed, the villagers  remain refugees in their land.

Owerri, Aug 04, 2005 (Vanguard/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- IMO State Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Chief Sonnie Hart-Ibe, has appealed to the Federal Government to urgently intervene in checking the massive flood devastatingUmuna and Uzoubi autonomous communities in Orlu local government area of the state.

Chief Hart-Ibe made the appeal when he paid an unscheduled inspection tour of the flood and sites at Umusasa, Primary School I and II, Umuna and Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Umuna.

He noted that the reconstruction work along the Orlu-Eziachi-Nkwerre road escalated the problem and assured the people that government would come to their rescue.

My pictures and explanations are up to date. Orlu floods have worsened since these palliatives were done by Okorocha govt.

It is not the duty of the federal government to do urban drainage systems for states. It is the constitutional duty of the state governments. That's why late Gov. Amadi Ikwechegh started the Orlu urban drainage project. Federal government often comes in to ameliorate gully erosion problems in the states.

Abagworo be thoughtful for a moment: if your type of BUCK PASSING is continued by Imo state government, and as expected, flood washes away most of the roads in Orlu in the immediate future, who shall be the loser? Imo state govt and Orlu, of course.

The so-called erosion control contract awarded by federal government for erosion control in Orlu, and which you and your principals continue to present in order to enable IMSG evade its responsibilities in Orlu: if the contract is genuine, why was it not executed then? The contract was not genuine, so only a heartless fellow must continue to rely on such a 2009 phoney contract papers and watch all the flood damages go on in this area.

Who do you people think you are fooling with your impression that it is the duty of the federal government to provide urban drainage systems in the states?

Church? If you ever go to church, you could not remain a perpetual liar. By the way, what do you have against Orlu that makes you fight like a tiger to have flood water carry away much of the town? Be careful.

Every city has a slum. In Owerri we have World bank, Amakohia, Douglas and Uratta. World bank shall surely get Government attention when Umuguma becomes peaceful. The problem with some of them is self destructive politics from land dispute. That scares away investors and government presence.

Last may not have been heard over Area K
land saga at the World Bank Area of Owerri
regarding its real onwership as another
group has emerged laying claim to the same
land resulting to a bloody clash between the
disputants where all sorts of dangerous
weapons were brandished and used freely.
It would be recalled that the present
administration led by Owelle Rochas Okorocha
had earmarked Area K for its monumental
projects – A twenty five storey five star hotel,
Akachi, the proposed tallest tower in Africa
and Ecumenical Centre. No sooner had the
Imo State Government cleared the land in
question that people of Owerri nchi ise of
Owerri Municipal invaded the land claiming it
was their ancestral home. For almost one
month, they had succeeded holding
Government to ransom as the contractors had
withdrawn their equipment for fear of
vandalizing them.

That ecumenical centre has now been sited elsewhere.
