Oklahoma State Soccer player, Courtney Dike, has turned down monetary rewards for representing Nigeria at this year's Fifa Under-20 Women's World Cup finals.

Courtney, younger sister to Super Eagles striker, Bright Dike, rejected a $7,000-bonus from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after featuring at the World Cup in Canada, where the Falconets finished second to Germany.

Her reason for turning down the bonus is that she is satisfied with the opportunity given to her to play for Nigeria, which she considers bigger than monetary reward.

NFF's head of competitions, Dr Sanusi Mohammed, revealed that the federation is shocked at Courtney's refusal and the position of her family not to collect the money.

" When we called her mother to confirm the delivery of the allowances, she declined it and insisted the opportunity to serve Nigeria was all the reward the family needed, adding she was too young to earn that much,” said Mohammed.

Courtney played all six matches for the Falconets including the 0-1 loss to Germany's under-20 women in Montreal in the final of the Fifa Under-20 Women's World Cup in August.

She scored two goals at the tournament against Asian nations, South Korea and North Korea. Courtney also holds the record of scoring the fastest goal at Fifa women's tournaments when she netted in 18 seconds in Nigeria's 2-1 win over South Korea in the group stage.

Good intentions of sacrificing for your country. Instead of rejecting the money, why not donate it to orphanages who will benefit from the money most? By rejecting the money, it gets stolen by criminals in government. It doesn't make sense abeg!!

A million naira is all I need to make a great exploit,Why would someone now give back such amount to the nigerian govt wen they are busy lootin billions of naira. Pls miss Dike,if there's a way u can get back ur money jst lend me a million naira out of it and i'll be very greatful till eternity. I will actually pay back wit interest. #damnserious.

rather than question the young woman's wonderful gesture to her country

why not lead a campaign and ask the NFF to donate that money to charity?

We know that our leaders are corrupt but they are a reflection of our society

this reminds me of obasanjo's presidential hands shake. just like somebody suggested she should collect the money and donate it to charity like motherless babies. most of her team mates have are from a humble background and they need that money badly as they are thebread winners of their respective families, make she no carry her "reggae spoil their makossa"

These are the type of people Nigerians need to start promoting. Rather than giving publicity to thieves and criminals. The girl played her heart out because she still believes in this country. We have people like her all over the country. Only problem is that our voices are being downed by the lousy criminals.

Patriotism gone wrong. Kids are starving and orphans are crying not knowing where the next meal would come from. Donate that money to them and help a noble cause instead of making the looters at NFF 1.2 Million naira richer.

This is gross s.t.u.p.i.d.i.t.y.

There's something not quite right with this story. She worked hard to earn this money and yet she refused. This isn't about patriotism, its about working and getting paid. This is her profession, its like journalists that are employed by the govt to say they don't need their money cos they were happy to have worked for their country. Why not give the money to the needy rather than leaving it in the hands of those greedy men at glass house. Anyway she has her reasons if this story is true o.
