For those that did not notice this road is in a certain utopia/eldorado called LAGOS!!!!!!

This is a combined failure by our political class. By this I mean all our leaders from state level to federal level, and not just from this era but also from previous era!

To pretend it's GEJ's alone is simply living in denial.

Fashola and Tinubu also have responsibility here!

You can't praise APC/Fashola for all that is right about Lagos and then turn around to blame GEJ when it is bad news!

That's just double standards!

you dey mind them? if they are truly patriotic as they claim, would they celebrate such news on yahoo! ? why cant they trend the other 70 percent of federal roads that are in top shape? #myroadisbetterthanyours

by the time lagos ibadan is completed, I will wait to hear this class of Nigerians will say.

this so called road is under apc supervision in lagos.

where did yahoo get this pictures from? you and i. from our facebook and twitter handles.

yahoo will never tell a place in the us or uk have no power and they run on generators.

continue to project your country how you want the whole world to see you, then complain when you go out there and they abuse you and extra check you before they let you in.

Nigerian roads are bad, both at the state and federal levels, but, the greater shame should go to the FG, I am sure the total distance of roads at the Federal level is far less than that of intra city roads of 2 or 3 states combined, the FG gets the bulk of revenue in the country 56% compared to 44% for all other organs, there is no single justifiable reason for the FG not to over perform, those who are comparing a state to the FG are diminishing their arguments, FG has far less responsibility and more revenue than the states and its infrastructure should be top class.

The info I have requested for is critical to holding government accountable. I have stated this several times on this thread. But the FG and those who defend it have refused to make the info available to all Nigerians in a clear and unambiguous format. Is this for sinister reasons? Is it because most Nigerian roads that are in a poor or bad state are federal roads? Is that the reason? angry

The highest percentage of bad roads in Nigeria are the so called Trunk C roads that fall under the purview of the local government area councils.

The reason is that they are mostly made up of closes, streets and cresents that don't really carry much vehicular movements. Also budgetary constraints makes the local government not to meetup the demand of fixing them.

I can boldly tell you the federal roads in my state, benin-warri, warri-asaba, npa expressway, east-west road. Are the best roads in my area of the state. We don't have that many federal roads, most of our village and small town roads are state and local wahala. NNDC helping many local governments improve their roads, does not make them federal. This is my personal experience.

Not sure what you mean up here. Trunk C roads are bad because they are made up mostly of closes, street and crescents? Or trunk C roads are bad because they fall under the purview of LGs?

Your last comment about budgetary constraints is a classic example of the aberrant character of Nigeria's political system. LGs are responsible for trunk C roads but LG chairmen cannot be held accountable because state governors have decided to take over the allocation due to LGs. Interestingly, this daylight robbery cuts across party lines. angry

How can this country develop where state governors have completely emasculated LGs? How?

pendy79:
Lagos (AFP) - The dismal state of Nigeria's roads is a constant source of exasperation for the long-suffering population but a tongue-in-cheek campaign on social media is trying to shame the authorities into action.

Posting under the hashtag #MyRoadIsWorseThanYours, Nigerians have been sharing examples of the country's worst highways.

Bomb crater-sized potholes, roads resembling muddy rivers in the annual rainy season and some unrecognisable even as public thoroughfares have been posted online.

The tweets have an underlying seriousness: when Africa's leading economy and oil producer claims to have pumped 1.4 trillion naira ($8.5 billion, 6.75 billion euros) into infrastructure improvements since 1999, why are the roads so bad?

They have also helped balance out the pages of self-congratulatory newspaper advertisements taken out by state governments, proudly displaying the smooth tarmac of upgraded, traffic-free roads.

- Deaths, strikes, responsibility -

Olanrewaju Adenekan is a clearing agent at Lagos' main port of Apapa. He is 51 but looks two decades older and is in poor health. Both he and his doctor blame it on his daily commute.

Adenakan leaves his house in Sango-Ota, north of Lagos, before 4:30 am every day to reach Apapa at around 9:00 am. The distance door-to-door is just 37 kilometres (23 miles).

"The traffic situation is bad. I spend between four and five hours for a journey that should take less than one hour," he told AFP.

Adenekan owns two cars but prefers to take public transport because it is cheaper -- and also because the badly maintained roads take a debilitating toll on his vehicles.

"Nigerians spend a lot of money on maintaining their vehicles because of potholes, which damage tyres, wheel rims, shock absorbers and other components," said quantity surveyor Alani Amusa.

Time spent in traffic jams is also dead time, robbing businesses of productivity and effective workers. When they eventually arrive, they are often exhausted.

Motorists stuck for hours in jams are sitting ducks for armed robbers.

And bad roads mean more accidents. Nigeria had the highest road fatality rates in Africa in 2010 at 33.7 deaths per 100,000, the World Health Organization said in a report published last year.

Recently, petrol tanker drivers threatened to go on strike if the bad roads were not fixed, blaming potholes and gullies for causing accidents.

Nigerian states and the federal authorities have been in dispute about who is responsible for maintaining and improving the roads -- meaning nothing gets done.

The Lagos State government for example has been at loggerheads with Abuja over reimbursements for repairs to federal-owned roads dating back to when Lagos was the country's capital.

- Corruption, under-funding -

As in so many walks of Nigerian life, corruption is also part of the problem.

"Contractors like to cut corners by not working to specification," said Amusa, who is involved in a number of road projects in Lagos state.

"They connive with corrupt officials to use sub-standard materials in order to maximise their profits.

Many roads lack proper drainage, turning them into swimming pools within minutes of a downpour; roadside culverts overflow; tarmac disintegrates; traffic lights and road signs are often absent.

Project costs can also be grossly inflated.

The 338-kilometre (212-mile) dual carriageway linking southern oil-producing states was awarded at a cost of 138.9 billion naira ($835 million, 670 million euros) in 2006 under former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Eight years later, the cost has increased nearly three-fold to 347 billion naira -- and the road is not yet finished.

Questions have been asked too about the cost of reconstruction of the 127.8-kilometre Lagos-Ibadan expressway -- the busiest road in west Africa, carrying an average of 250,000 vehicles per day.

The contract was awarded for 167.9 billion naira but some experts believe it could have been revamped for a lot less.

Most people, though, just want their own muddy, potholed streets paved and well-maintained to make the journey from their front doors to the main road less of a bone-shaking obstacle course.

Works Minister Mike Onolememen blamed chronic under-funding from the federal government, which has led to contractors revising up their project costs to accommodate rising prices of materials.

"About 500 billion naira was needed every year for the next four years to pave bad roads," he said. So far, he said the treasury has released just a quarter of the sum for the coming year.

Of course I am earnest. I cannot afford not to be.

We have long passed the stage of worrying about naivete or what outsiders will think about us. I spent a lot of valuable time a few days ago on another thread tackling a fellow called patriot4 who had a similar argument to yours. He, like you, was more concerned about image and perception.

There seems to be a preoccupation with image among those who do not support holding leadership accountable. Holding leadership accountable is one the key responsibilities of citizenship. It is a sacred duty. Without it we are lost.

If I may ask, how can you be passionately pro-Nigerian and yet apolitical?

Read well where you quoted me from. You will see it was a response to an insult.

You won't see an intra state road as worst as the you will see in Aba in any part of SW. I lived and worked in Akwa-ibom for over 11years. I passed through virtually all the states and I've had course to visit every part of the south south to the south east. All the states and their capitals before I relocated out of the country. So I know what I'm talking about. Lagos is not eldorado likewise newyork is not.

But you will see a strong desire to change the landscape and purposedriven leadership in the places I mentioned.

It's a shame, and very reprehensible, that the Federal Government "makes" and controls so much money yet it does absolutely jack shiyyyt to deserve it. And to add insult to injury the Federal Govt does nothing for the people, not even those from whose lands the resources that keeps the country afloat flows from. They turned their people to destitutes and a few just split the money among themselves. If you've even been to certain parts of the Niger-Delta,youll cry for Nigeria. It's a very heart wrenching situation.
