What is actually frightening is the very fact that our oga at the top patronizes these very airports almost every weekends. But yet he finds them up-to-standard. Now think of the other things he finds comforting.... embarassed

I guess the excuse must be that he uses the VIP terminals which are way better off!

At least I'm glad you admit Jonathan/PDP failed, that's the first step. Then leave the failure of "Tinubu" to Lagosians even though you said he has been ruling for 15 years?? If Jonathan as you have agreed has failed then it is the duty of we Nigerians including you to vote him out.

If "Tinubu" has failed Lagos, then its the duty of Lagosians to vote him out even though he's not holding any political office at the moment so I'm not sure how you want to achieve that.

Lagos State is arguably the only state in country which supplies water to all parts of the state, not just the capital.

When those people come here to display profound ignorance to lack of potable water in Lagos..I only shake my head in amazement at such willful ignorance and lies.

Lagos is one state that has covered a huge part of the state within her water network and with aggressive expansion....the only areas not covered yet are new developing areas... mainly on the outskirts of the state.

Damn Shame!!!!!!!

What does bad airport have to do with travel?? Who wants to travel to a place where the airports have been named among the worst in the continent. This is a political issue because so much has been said about this transformation agenda of which the development of airports has been a huge part of.

Anyway y'all can't hide the truth, keep attempting to. Good luck!

Nigerian airports among the worst in Africa, FAAN differs

Agency says country’s aviation facilities highly rated

THREE Nigerian airports have been rated among the worst in Africa. While Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, is voted the 10th worst in Africa, the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and Port Harcourt International Airport, Port Harcourt were ranked the seventh and the sixth worst airports on the continent.

Other airports with dismal performance in 2014 are Khartoum International Airport, Sudan (first); Kinshasa N’djili International Airport, Democratic Republic of the Congo (second); Tripoli International Airport, Libya (third); Dar es Salaam Julius Nyerere International Airport, Tanzania (fourth); Luanda Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport, Angola (fifth); N’Djamena International Airport, Chad (eighth) and Accra Kotoka International Airport, Ghana (ninth).

This was contained in a survey conducted by The Guide To Sleeping in Airports, the website that documents information on airports and the people who sleep in them.

In a statement by the website, voters submitted stories as they relate to unfortunate airport experiences across the continent.

“From dirty floors and bathrooms to the regular request for bribes, travellers were unimpressed with the airports that made it onto this year’s worst airports in Africa list.

“Other complaints revolved around a lack of air conditioning in sweltering climates, general navigational chaos, limited yet expensive restaurant options and questionably effective security processes.

“While travelling through these airports, most people prefer to skip the airport sleeping experience altogether and splurge on a nearby airport hotel instead. These airports task patience of travellers,” the report stated.

However, five airports made the list of the best in Africa. The list includes Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport, South Africa, which is ranked the primus inter pares in Africa.

This is followed by Cape Town International Airport, South Africa (second); Durban King Shaka International Airport, South Africa (third), Algiers Houari Boumediene International Airport, Algeria (fourth); and Addis Ababa-Bole International Airport, Ethiopia (fifth).

In Europe, Charles de Gaulle airport, France was voted the worst, followed by Sheremetyevo in Moscow, which one traveller called “hell on earth.”

FAAN spokesperson, Mr. Yakubu Datti, has, however, dismissed the result of the survey, saying that it could not be accurate. In a telephone interview with The Guardian, Datti said other organisations had positively rated Nigeria airports. “I am just arriving from an event where improvement of Nigerian airports has been applauded,” he said.

He promised to provide data that would counter the result of the survey, but he did not do so until press time.

Several attempts made in the recent past by FAAN to improve the state of the airports through private-public partnership have been enmeshed in controversy. FAAN had at several times disagreed with indigenous concessionaires over contract terms. The recent examples are Maevis Ltd., an integrated automated service provider, and Bi-Courtney Limited, the concessionaire of the MMA2.

FAAN said the agreements were skewed in favour of the concessionaires and to the detriment of the Federal Government.

These disagreements have exposed many international passengers to hardship at both the Lagos and Abuja airports. Experience of such passengers may have contributed to the rating that Nigerian got in the survey, said a passenger, Mr. Asekun Thomas.

Stakeholders said the contention around concessioning agreements may prevent investors from showing interest in building aviation infrastructure in the future.

To be honest, I am tired of the shenanigans of Seun and his partisan mods. After the elections, and especially after a GMB win, I am out of Nairaland for good as this forum is no longer what it used to be anyway. I gain nothing being a member of Nairaland today whereas I used to enjoy discussing with and learning from the likes of Katsumoto, Pukkah, Eguerilla, Kilode and many other intelligent and interesting posters who have simply left and have stayed away . There is no reason for any productive Nigerian to post here when the place has been taken over by cretins with the tacit support of those who moderate and run this forum. They do not even hide the backwardness they wish to entrench. It is the Nigerian way my brother. The more you look the less you see.

It's either the pipe supplying your family friends has been ruptured or they don't pay their water bill. In all the places I've lived in Lagos State, I get water from the LASG. Though sometimes it doesn't flow, but water is given to Lagosians for which they pay for. This has been the practice right from the 1800's when daRocha was supplying water.

Filth Rules In Toilets Of Some Lagos Schools

In an expansive hall inside the premises of Wesley Primary School, Agege, a cluster of pupils from various public schools were in ecstasy last Wednesday. It was an educational programme, featuring a mini competition and reading exercise. The event was at its peak.

Slipping out of the hall, our correspondent looked around for available restrooms. There were none in sight. A teacher walking by gruffly waved the journalist to an open door just behind the hall.

“That’s the children’s toilet; you can make use of it,’’ she said.

The ‘children’s toilet’ is an improvised latrine accessed from an ante room. There are four toilets in all with none having a water closet. One door was broken down; one was shut, while two were flung open. In one of the opened toilets, caked faeces decorated a pole while pieces of paper already used to clean up by pupils littered the floor. The putrid odour oozing from the toilets provoked instant nausea.

A young pupil stepped in at this point, darted a look at the reporter and made for one of the toilets. She bent down to urinate and left when the business was done. Our correspondent allowed her to leave before taking pictures.

Bids to speak with the head teacher were not successful as he was not available. The premises, however, also house the Vetland Primary School and the Local Government Education Authority.

Our correspondent also sought to speak with the Education Secretary, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Authority, Mr. Taiwo Balogun, but he was also not available. Sources however said the toilets were not sufficient for the school.

“Over 300 pupils make use of that toilet. That is what primary education in this state has turned into. Unlike the secondary schools, which use funds from the EKO Project, we have nothing. Most of the things we do here are self-help projects. The doors to the toilets are repaired from time to time but the odour is a shame, I must tell you,’’ said the source.

Elsewhere at Ipaja, pupils of Abesan Primary School, Estate Primary School and Housing Primary School urinate in the open. The schools, sharing premises, have no toilet facility to cater for members of staff and the pupils.

The head teacher of one of the schools refused to grant audience to our correspondent. But a source said a Parents’ Forum is already constructing a toilet for the schools.

“The situation in this school is pathetic. As you can see, both the staff and pupils have no decent toilet facility. That one under construction is from the Parents’ Forum. The local government, in my view, is trying its best. But it seems we have been forgotten by the state government,” said the source.

The indecent state of toilets at the Wesley Primary School and the Abesan Estate schools mirrors the reality in many of the 1,007 primary schools, 345 Junior Secondary Schools and 311 Senior Secondary Schools in the state. In spite of the efforts by the state government in turning around the education sector and providing a conducive environment for learning, such poor toilet spectacles abound in many public schools in the ‘Centre of Excellence’.

A professor of Public Administration, Mr. Ladipo Adamolekun, said the state of the toilets could impact negatively on the pupils. According to him, many toilet facilities across even the secondary and tertiary sectors in Nigeria are nothing to write home about.

“The report is even worse if you look at the secondary and tertiary institutions. That is one of the telltales of the decay in the education sector. Environment definitely affects learning, especially for female students. I am aware that the Millennium Development Goals prorgrammes have provision for sanitation. The girl-child is more affected when sanitation is poor. It leads to health hazards,’’ he said.

According to experts, such a dirty environment is a harbinger of diseases, such as diarrhea, dysentery and typhoid.

Attempts to talk with the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, were not successful. However, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Mr. Jide Lawal, put the blame on the doorsteps of the affected schools.

“It is an isolated case. If you have four or five schools like that out of 1,007 primary schools in Lagos, then definitely they are isolated cases. These schools have been told to take ownership. If my toilet at home is bad, will I call Fashola because of that? It shows the type of person that I am. But you can text me the names of the school, it is noted, he said.
