*Tyres have expiry date. To start with, vehicle tyre have a 4-year validity period from their Date of Manufacture (DOM). Thereafter, the tyre expires and may burst whilst in use.

*How to find out whether your tyre has expired? First, check for a stamp like this: (*0504*). There is an asterisk at the beginning and at the end of this serial number (Some tires don't have asterisk).

*The First two digits are the week so 0504 is fifth week in 2004. Therefore, *0504* shows that the said tyre is manufactured in the 5th week of the year 2004

*Check all your tires for safety purposes. Do not use expired tires. They are likely to burst, especially when running in hot weather because the rubber component may have hardened and cracked

I have been looking for this information for a long time. Thank you for the sharp information.

I had an experience, of recent, of being caught for an expired spare tire. I was shocked to hear this and started looking for how the FRSC guy knew my tire was expired, but thanks op I now know and would keep a vigilant eye on my tires.

Tires do not actually expire! It's just d date of manufacture that's stamped on them. If they did, it would clearly state it. How many products do u know of, that one has to do some arithmetic to get d expiry date? It's jst another way the FRSC guys take advantage of our ignorance.
The dates are there for only one reason: warranty.
Tire manufacturers offer waranty for 4yrs from date of purchase or 5yrs from date of manufacture, if u've lost ur receipt. Research it!

And those dates appear only on one side. So if U're not willing to argue with the FRSC, just have ur vulcaniser install them the other way round, with the dates inside.

They start getting a bit flaky from 5yrs.
Even in foreign countries they observe it too. So don't blame vio/frsc for anything

Please do tell us the particular country that observes the four year rule. Not all tires get flaky. Cheap chinko tires maybe but not the premium brands. Tires are checked for thread depth over there for all I know.

Rubber products generally have a shelf life of 5 - 10 years from their date of manufacture. The actual time it will fail will depend on a number of factors... Temperature, road condition, working pressure and quality of the rubber and storage.

I like your type. The fast guys abi short cut lovers. You think say oyibo man no know say people wey dey think go dey abi? So you no know say dem dey mark all those tyres for both sides?

But guy even at that, if I were to be the Road Safety official to stop you on the road and you tell me this nansense that your tyres have been installed the other way round, God help you, I will INSIST that you will remove all the tyres you've installed in that manner to show me the expiry dates on them.

Again, God help you, if you start to tell me that you don't have your jack or your wheel wrench. Na dat time you go know say bush meat don catch hunter.

Just negodi. I'm trying to save your life by telling you to use good tyres and you are trying to prove smart

Besides, don't you know that tyres sellers will also eat? So tell me, how will they eat if you INSIST on using your tyres for more than 15 yearz?

Chai, ndi Naijiria!!!!

op, please stop posting false info here. tyres don't have expiry date. if they did, it would be stamped on them just like any other product with an expiry date.
please note that some tyre manufacturers give 5 or more years as warranty or certain number of miles on their tyres.
some manufacturers claim their tyres can go 60,000 miles before change, assuming the owner covers an average of 10,000 miles a year. that translates to six years.
so the owner should remove his tyres because FRSC said it has 'expired' after 4 years?
there are other parameters used to check the condition of a tyre. thread wear depth, cuts, cracks, bulges etc.
those are the parameters I expect them to use. an expired tyre would have clear cracks and appear flaky when inspected visually.

Some people are extremely gullible and these fraudsters in FRSC uniforms are taking advantage of that.
