ABUJA (Reuters) - Technology played a decisive role in helping Muhammadu Buhari become the first Nigerian to oust a sitting president at the ballot box, from social media campaigning to biometric machines preventing the widespread rigging that marred past polls.

Three decades after seizing power in a military coup, part of the 72-year-old former general's appeal to the electorate in Africa’s biggest economy lay in his successful rebranding as a man who embraced democracy.

A good deal of that rebranding happened online, where campaigning from smartphones can build momentum at low cost.

"The digital strategy has been a lifeline of the campaign for young people. We needed to create an image that enabled people to connect with him," Adebola Williams, the 29-year-old whose Lagos-based communications company, StateCraft, orchestrated Buhari's digital drive, told Reuters.

Even the doubters conceded that they had seen campaign material online.

"There were a lot of discussions on their Facebook pages, but I am not sure that really influenced me," said Endurance Dauda, 24, a student in the northern city of Kaduna, who said many of her friends are not online.

While not everyone was convinced the online methods swung their vote, the potential is hard to argue with.

Africa’s most populous nation - with 170 million inhabitants - has some of the world's highest levels of mobile phone ownership. There are 127 million mobile phone subscriptions in Nigeria, the International Telecommunications Union says.

"In the last four years it has become a lot easier and cheaper to get the Internet on your phone. It isn't exclusive anymore," Williams said, arguing that going online is no longer a luxury, despite most Nigerians living on less than $2 a day.

Defeated president Goodluck Jonathan's team also used social media, including YouTube videos highlighting Buhari’s autocratic past and facets of Jonathan’s life. In one, he was seen exercising with a personal trainer and playing squash.

But possibly more significant than the online campaigning was the use of biometric machines to identify voters, which prevented the ballot-box stuffing and multiple voting that characterised past polls.

"The card reader played a constructive role in deterring individuals who, in the past, have tampered with the electoral process either through ballot stuffing or tampering with the election results," said Dr Christopher Fomunyoh, of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, a non-governmental organization that promotes democracy.

As a result, this election was judged Nigeria's freest and fairest election yet.

"Fortune favors the bold. Deciding to go hi-tech was absolutely the right thing to do," U.S. Ambassador James Entwistle said after the poll.

Once the biometric aspect of election technology had been proven, there was only way for the victor to celebrate.

When Buhari got the call from Jonathan conceding defeat, Williams used his phone to capture the moment and share the image on Twitter and Instagram.

If you believe that you will believe anything

This is how Buhari won

1. Lopsided voter registration in Buhari stronghold

2. Lopsided PVC registration in Buhari stronghold

3. Lopsided PVC distribution in Buhari stronghold

4. Misrepresentation of the facts using Tinubu's connection with the media

5. Tapping into tribal and religious prejudices of the electorate and Buhari's ethnic population advantage.

To suggest otherwise is just further from the truth and wide off the mark. The voters in rural Hausa Fulani towns are not on social media. The voters in camps in the north east do not have better socia media reach than voters in the South!

PDP will go back to the drawing board and PDP will learn very fast. Anybody who knows David Axlerod very well will know this is his playbook!

** The 2015 election **

Looking at the numbers on the social media alone, General Muhammed Buhari won this contest, ( an evident prove is on nairaland, and even top PDP officials attested to the fact that APC wins elections online only ). On several online platforms, Twitter, Nairaland, Facebook, Bloggers etc. The General followers out numbered that of Goodluck Jonathan.

On Twitter, The General had 20k+ followers; Goodluck i doubt has a twitter account but he does have a facebook account, of if we must be honest twitter users are more matured to facebook users. Social media is like breakfast. it's realy an important meal you do really wish to have, but is it just a meal ? - No.

** The numbers game **

Despite numbers are important in election, i have to say that numbers don't tell the whole story, looking at the social media in totality, is pretty darn even. Sheer numbers can be misleading - for example, in real life, if someone hosts an event wit 3000 People there, you could say they were popular. Maybe, maybe not - maybe people went because of the gifts, or the dinner. You need to look at how long someone spent looking at the video, how often the tweets were re-tweeted - for the party example, if there were only 20 people there but they were very influential, or they really like the person.

** Do tweets mean votes? **

Problem with social media is that no-one knows, yet, whether it works to get people to the polls. Just because you tweet about something, or "like" it on Facebook, are you going to vote for the person who posted it? I Ymodulus am a practical example of one, i supported the general in all wholelity but truth is i never left my room to go out there to vote.

** The real online battleground **

The social media focus could be misleading. Social media gets a lot of attention because it is what you can see from the outside, but it is absolutely not the most important part of the online political campaign. Using the internet through a wide variety of means to get people to act in the real world, that's important.

General Muhammad Buhari's campaign to getting funds online remained a very successful part of this strategy, alongside other strategies such as targeted online advertising and micro-targeting. Talking about the Facebook election or the Twitter president, i believe that's an utterly meaningless statement.

** The future **

However i believes that the social media as a tool of engaging with voters should not be overlooked.

When buhari was winning all the online pools, TANiods were mocking us saying that we only win online while the win in reality. Truth is Jonathan was surrounded with daft people that failed to take advantage of the social media to canvass more support for him.

Rather they used it to spew their hate on buhari and his followers thereby making them popular.

Buhari please don't forget nairaland wen u resume duties on may 29th. Cos u won all the online pools conducted here on NL, so don't forget us o baba.

I agree with this 100%.

That was why I kept laughing at those ignoramuses when they kept saying Buhari is a social media president. They didn't quiet understand the implication of his online popularity on events offline.

Ps: where is that arrogant slimy son of a slippery sea slog, Aye Dee?? Seems the albino has become so scared of sunshine and has gone into hiding.

Utter nonsense with this glory hunting and overhyped back-slapping..Technology and social media's effect on Buhari was like water on a duck's back...no effect..nada..The only technology we see here is the transistor radio, an itenerary item in the custody of every hausa speakin man of age..from the businness tycoon down to talakawas the meruwa, meshai even megida. This obsolete system kept these folks updated in their millions, small wonder these millions at a critical juncture delivered for Buhari...Social media only gave us an electronic 3D view of the whole drama,we don't see how HD television can influence the outcome of a football match. How much less social media on electorate who predominantly are illiterate never their chronic lack of internet accessibility.

That's good to know..

In other news:

See amazing calculations:

APC=15424921 votes,
PDP=12853162 votes,
1+5+4+2+4+9+2+1= 28 1+2+8+5+3+1+6+2= 28.

Hence APC=28, PDP=28.

Date of election = 28.

Let's do mathematical analysis from d above data.

Now APC - PDP= 15424921-12853162= 2571759.

Then 2+5+7+1+7+5+9=36 and 36 are the number of states we have in the country.

Have ever thought why God destined this election postponement? That's one of the hidden secrets. Somethings are even beyond our comprehension.

God is indeed wonderful!
