MTN Nigeria on Monday warned that should there be attacks on its facilities, it might be forced to close shop and 99 per cent of its over 6,000 workforce in the country, who are Nigerians, would be thrown into the labour market.

It also said that calls for the boycott of its services were unjustified as such an action would affect its support chain, which could cause another 500,000 Nigerians to lose their means of livelihood.

The company stated this in Lagos some hours after two groups protested in its Abuja and Benin offices against the killing of foreigners in its home country, South Africa.

According to the Corporate Service Executive, MTN Nigeria, Mr. Wale Goodluck, there are only 12 expatriates working for the company in the country, compared to a workforce of 6,000 Nigerians.

Goodluck said, “So, if people go ahead with their threats to attack our facilities, what that means is that we may be forced to close down the business in Nigeria and about 6,000 Nigerians that make up 99 per cent of our workforce will be unemployed.

“Then, when you look at our support chain, we have about 500,000 Nigerians gainfully employed. So, boycotting our services simply means destroying so many other Nigerian businesses and making over 500,000 other Nigerians to lose their jobs.

“This business supports a lot of businesses across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Many of the businesses that are affiliated to South Africa are in the retail space, supporting the growth of Nigeria and employing so many Nigerians.”

He noted that the company had spent in excess of $15bn on capital expenditure growing the telecommunications business in Nigeria.

“We see no revenge of Xenophobia and we commend the role the Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has played; at least there has been no fatality on the part of any Nigerian,” Goodluck added.

This is so poorly handled by Mr Wale..... is this what he should be saying to an angry mob? I sounds more like a threat more than a plea... very few persons would care about the employment of 6,000 or 500, 000 Indirectly sustained by mtn when there have lost a breadwinner to some sensless attacks...
if were president I would give S/A 48 hours ultimatum after which evacuate all Nigerians willing to come back and other their embassy to be shut down!
this is What Mandiba would have done

Are you comparing 6000 to over 800,000 Nigerians in SA? Are South Africans not employed by the Nigerian businesses they've destroyed?

Unrepentant South African xenophobic spirit.

I hope Nigerians won't hurt Nigerians all in the name of retaliation of what is happening in far away south africa...

An eye for an eye would make over 6000 nigerians jobless...
did you say far away South Africa? We have 800000 Nigerians in SA who are under threat. Who‘s business are been attcked & their lives in danger & you tlking about FAR AWAY. It is because you neither have a friend nor a relation in SA thats why you wrote that.

Come to think of it: what is 6000 compared to 800000? Even the 500000 he mentioned is still not upto 800000.

I think it is time Nigerian government start to nationalize all SA business in Nigeria.

Wale Goodluck is talking as if this is not where MTN makes most of her profits. It is the Nigerian market that empowers & finances other countries for MTN.
They should not threaten us with job lose. It is life before jobs. If we lose jobs they lose facilities. Other companies will buy the facilities & still employ Nigerians. So he should forget that story.

He who has ears. Irate Nigerians that are calling for the closure of MTN should understand the consequences. MTN is a law abiding company doing in business in Nigeria, the events occurring in their originating country shouldn't be used as an excuse to promote further divisions between the countries. They're a major stakeholder in the Nigerian economy and we should give them the respect they deserve. We should boycott Shell and other IOCs that degrade our environments with their business operations. Besides, its hypocrisy that a country like ours with a rich history of human rights abuses would seek revenge over acts human rights abuses in another country.
You have said the unpopular truth.

What are u even talkn about, and if they eventually close down the company, who looses more?? Who will be thrown to the streets without job and what about the recharge card vendors, retailers, distributors and many more affiliated to mtn that makes up d 500,000. The mtn executive is right. This is not the best way out. We will only be using our hands to dig our graves.
