Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa: Buhari’s Ban On AIT Illegal, Undemocratic, Dictatorial by Rapmoney(m): 9:16am On Apr 28, 2015
Just read this article and decided to share...

I read with ominous concern, alarm and great worry, the report indicating that the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, stopped the crew of African Independent Television, from covering his official activities, purely on account of documentaries aired by AIT in the course of the just concluded Presidential campaigns.

This is totally unacceptable, unpalatable and dictatorial. It has no place in our new Nigeria.

Indeed under and by virtue of section 39 of the 1999 Constitution, every person, including AIT, has a right to freedom of expression and the press. This is restated in the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights. Furthermore, it is contrary to section 42 of the 1999 Constitution, which prohibits discrimination and preferential treatment. AIT cannot be subjected to any treatment to which other news media are not subjected to. This is not to endorse the actions of AIT, but such actions must be dealt with in a manner prescribed by law.

This decision is draconian and dictatorial, throwing us back to the very dark days of 1984, when the same Buhari gaged the press and threw journalists into jail.

This decision is contrary to the manifesto of the All Progressive Congress, it is contrary to the campaign promises of Buhari himself and it is contrary to the laws of Nigeria and the minimum expectations of human development.

In particular, section 22 of the 1999 Constitution demands the press to hold government accountable to the people. How can the press do that, if they are subjected to such Stone Age rule and barrack practice of press guillotine? How can a president elect chose which media outfit he will allow to cover his official engagements?

It is recalled most vividly that the Nation newspaper, TV Continental and not a few of Nigeria’s Online media, human rights activists, lawyers (including myself) subjected President Goodluck Jonathan to rigours of scrutiny and strident criticisms, but he did not cultivate the habit of denying any media outfit access to cover his events. His last presidential media chat was attended by the editor of Premium Times, a frontline Online medium that was very critical of the Jonathan administration at the time.

In his presentation at Chatam House in London, Buhari specifically gave an express undertaking to the whole world, that he had totally repented from his past dictatorial tendencies and that he would not subject Nigeria to any of his past Undemocratic practices. Yet he has now taken us back to his 1984 years of dictatorship.

If Buhari has issues with any news item aired by AIT, the option open to him in a democratic dispensation, that he openly declared to defend, is to approach the court to vindicate himself. It will be too bad for Nigeria, if the President elect has harboured any form of revenge and unforgiving spirit, from the presidential campaigns and he is using such to deal with the people of Nigeria.

The APC and the President elect are duty bound to respect their campaign promises and indeed the Constitution and other laws of Nigeria.

The president elect has too many issues to deal with in Nigeria presently, than to carry over his wounds from the campaigns. Nigerians are waiting for his cabinet and his blue print for tackling the blackout that we are currently subjected to. Indeed, we are waiting for the president elect to unravel and bring out the trillions of Naira stacked away by so many greedy people, for our common good and development.

I urge the president elect to rescind his decision immediately by opening his activities to the AIT crew.

When some of us said Gmb is not fit nor qualified to lead a complex nation like nigeria his gullible followers replied with insults.

Buharis mind is still trapped in the 80s military era and decrees. How can an intelligent person keeps making such serious mistakes so early except his mind is warped

Didn't he promised not to gag the press

The writer of the useless article would have done worse if he was in Buhari's shoes.

Jonathan got his own share of propaganda but no where was his personal life.marriage and adopted kids were talked about laced with insults.

AIT went too far in their hate propaganda. Why can't they just be like Channels TV who are very well respected in the media world?

It is very shameful that AIT being the first privately owned TV station is being used to drive a malicious propaganda against Buhari and other APC leaders.

Like I said,Buhari has the right to his privacy. After all,he isn't president yet. AIT standards and ethics must be looked into.

In the writer's logic, If AIT has the right to air whatever it wishes without decorum and professionalism; GMB have the same right to bar any unprofessional, Commercialised and corrupt media house from covering his events.

How unprofessional can a media house be, by denigrating the dead and talking about the dead wife of GMB?

Sir Alex Ferguson barred BBC for over a decade.

its a welcome development, according to APC.

In this 21st century if this is the way wrong journalism is corrected, then the media will be gagged to only pass news and information that must favour the presidency. This may be the beginning to lack of press freedom and FOI. Lets be careful in praising this step

How did AIT denigrate the dead?

... and if you say it is wrong to talk about his deceased wife.... I and a lot of other Nigerians do not see anything wrong with it as I never knew this before and it is a look back in his past life... if anything AIT said was false, and they have a reputation for doing that, that's a different matter, and could still not even be grouns for b barring them from a public function...

So AIT asking GMB to tell the world what killed his wife is not denigrating the dead?

So AIT talking about a certificate that is not missing is not false. AIT with their bias report is not unprofessional? When it was obvious that their chairman is a major beneficiary of this present govt "kworoption".

See man mii, GMB is still a private citizen till May 29, he has all the rights in the world from barring anybody from poke nosing into his affairs till then.

If someone dies, and the living are calling for an autopsy or to find the cause of the person's death amounts to denigrating the dead person? for real? or you probably meant denigrating Buhari himself...whichever angle you look at it if the duty of the press is to inform... they did just that with that documentary... you may not like it, but they have the right to do so.

Fox News in the US says all sorts of crap of Obama... during his campaign didn't they keep hammering on the "fact" that Obama was a Kenyan and had a Kenyan birth certificate or whatever lies they were telling...did and still tell till tomorrow?

How many times did Obama barr them from covering public functions? didn't he even appear on the Bill O'Riley show on Fox?

Oh GEJ, please don't go...!

AIT has no ethical issues... they have us a look back in Buhari's past... no lie was told that was challenged by him or anyone... they played their role professionally and informed as well as educated us... taking it personal is childish, its against democratic principles... and should be widely condemned.... because, this is how it starts.... don't be surprised if this NL you and I are on or even facebook will start being censored or terminated in the country.

The duty of the press is not to inform but to inform responsibly, which they never did. Was there any investigative journalism they did that showed GMB did not have certificate.

They only got paid to air a paid for propaganda. Do you think the same people did not approach Channels or STV. Why did those ones declined it. That is being professional.

GEJ please don't go!!!! After the monumental mess he just released.

did you really type this shocked You see nothing wrong in mocking a man's late wife and child ? shocked Please speak for yourself and not for other Nigerians. How will you feel if you suffer such personal tragedy and then one idi0t uses it to mock you years down the line? Just to score cheap personal or political scores?

c'mon, they talked about his late wife and also his late daughter (his first child) that died of sickle cell.

that is the lowest of lows.

Jonathan's wife (Patience) is barren. Do you know how unfortunate that is? All jonathan's kids were fathered by other women ( a man that goes from one church, prophet, bishop, etc to another). Yet, APC never used this to campaign against him in whatever form.
