First learn to feed in a spot always-you'll see the rush for the food,
then when switching to local-sinking feed, I reduce their feed (kg) consumption by 10 percent.
Then you would notice how the water swirls if they are plenty still picking up the feeds or if they are filled and have dispersed.

I came across this thread about 2 months ago. God bless Robonski and all the other experienced farmers for sharing their knowledge free of charge. I took my time to read through this thread, page by page, making notes of over 68 pages. I fell in love with catfish farming when I visited a fish farm in Kaduna 5 years ago. I was transferred to the south west (the hub of catfish farming in Nigeria) last year and I immediately enrolled for practical training with a good farmer on fingerlings and juveniles production. Construction of my hatchery will soon commence. I still have a lot more to learn. Catfish farming has gone far in the southwest compared to the north where I grew up. No wonder the southwest supplies most of the catfish consumed in the north. Watch out for my questions and contributions here and on Agricnetwork. NO MORE PROCRASTINATION. I'M IN.

Please house, am a novice in fish farming. I don't understand the meaning of the abbreviated local feed Formula listed here, can u guys break it down for the newbies? Will the feed be in powdered form?(won't it all dissolve in the water) How will the fishes eat it if it's not pelleted? Where can I easily buy the ingredients? How much does each components cost(so I can know what am up against) , and how do I mix it.... Thanks very much for the selfless help being rendered here in the forum. God bless

You can use ABX1's formula. Its posted above. Its too early to run out of cash oh.. using local feed doesnt mean its way more cheaper than the bagged floating feed you buy. If u dnt get it right with local feed, u can end up spending a fortune and u will not get ur desired results or it turns out to be a disaster after 5months. What feed brand do you use? If u are using Coppens, Aqua or Multifeed, dats suicidal bcoz dey are so expensive now. There are some cheaper feeds in the market such as : Top Feeds, Vital Feeds, Sarb etc. People use floating feeds frm start to finish and still get their desired results and at d same time they still make their profits. Using local sinking or bagged floating is just all about preference.

GNC: groundnut cake
TS :toasted soya
Meth: methionine
OXY: Oxytetracycline

The feed wont be powder; the feeds are turned into pellets at d feedmill. You can either buy all d ingredients individually and take it to d feedmill for dem to mill it and pelletise it, or u just go to a feedmill with your written composition and dey churn out the feed for u.

If really you are a novice as you said in ur post, i will advice u stick with your floating feeds at least till after ur first batch of fish have been harvested. By dat time, u would av learnt alot in fish farming and u will be better equiped to handle the use of local feeds.

hi great pple , i have been a silent reader of this great forum. pls my fishes of about 200 in a white tank, are looking pale ie whitish in colour , which is given me concern , this is actually my third set, previous sets has black or deep grey colours. pls help me out.

So I started selling to bar parlour at the rate of N550 per kg and they all weigh 42kg . The first batch I forecast sales of N20+ but I still have other melange and post finger nails. I have spent close to 95k on feeding. I think at this point am already running into lose. I have released my mistakes which is overstocking without having enough capital to train them all...the whole fish so far should be 2500 thereabouts.

95k spent on 2500 fishes is too small, it means each fish consume d average of 38naira worth of feed

I don't know of any for now. I don search for feed mill tire for Anambra.i be also asked experience ppl BT they haven't seen either.

Am still on d lookout. They may have a line in main MKT which am yet to discover.
