From what you just wrote, it clearly shows that you are a rookie in strength-training exercise. I will not battle words with you, i have gone past that stage a long time. Follow what you think you know but also remember it is not quantity but quality in strength-training. At least, i am a living example.

STRENGTH TRAINING? don't go there, i have the strength that will take you several months or almost forever to have, i do intense strength training exercise so listen when i try to share you knowledge, you might know about bulking up and getting big size muscle mass but you do not know or have the experience in strength training like me. try doing a V-Sit using both hands to lift your body off the ground, and also try doing a Planche... go do your weak bodybuilding and stop comparing knowledge with me in fitness and strength training. i'm a powerhead bboy, and a gymnast with beast upperbody strength and core strength and i look ripped.

I throway salute my brother Pristine Pawa. As for me I don take style dey lazy small these days, so at most I go pump iron twice a week, but I go soon resume as before, because na small-small muscle dey turn to fat, if man pikin no take time.

@Booyakasha as you too dey vess like this, you sure say no dey use steroid so ? No use am o. Stay natural, and live long.

You could still put in HARD WORK without necessary spending LONGER TIME (3-4) hours in the gym. 1hour or 1hour 30min Max, is more than enough to hit a specific body parts really hard.. you could do dropsets and supersets to achieve that high volume and hard workout lots of trainers crave.

I don't use drugs.. i am lean with big muscles because i do powermoves in breakdancing and some gymnastic routines. i do bodyweight exercise... i only lift when i find the move i want to learn fustrating.

That is cool without question. Exercise of ANY sort enhances life and EXTENDS life, and it is good to see Nigerians catching on to this philosophy, and saying goodbye to the old, outdated idea that a pot belly equates with wealth and well being. Break dancing is VERY strenuous, and I know I would break a bone or two if I were to attempt to copy you guys that have taken the time to develop that elasticity that keeps injury at bay.

Thanks Pristine for all the info. I have been working out for for months now, my muscles have started becoming firmer and more toned. But they dont seem to be growing. What do you think is the problem? I am concerned about my chest more especially. Need all the advise you can give.

I am going to ask you some very important questions and from your answers, we will try to come up with realistic solutions.
How is your diet like?
How many times a week do you train?
Are you an ectomorph?
How often do you rest after training?
What exercises are you doing to develop your pecs?
Are you always undergoing stress?

I will be sharing some tips on how to look ripped and well-defined. Most bulky guys i have come across both on the street and in the gym are not ripped at all. Although they have muscles but the muscles are well covered with body-fat and as such those guys appear to be "fat". When you even take a close look at their midsection( abdomen), it usually appears protruded and lacking in muscle tone.

I just came across this thread today, and i was inspired. Thanks alot. I'm a bit overweight, and my abdomen is getting bigger (its a family thing) so i guess my only escape is to go hard on the muscles. I just want to lose weight, i don't wanna be all big and heavy with muscles like those guys up there. i have a pair of dumbells and a bench, but i have no clue how to start, what kind of exercises to do and how many reps etc. I'm familiar with the diet plan, cos i'm a nurse.
So my questions are,
which specific exercises can i do?
How many reps, and how long?
How far should i push myself?

Hi brother, sorry for not giving you a timely response. I am always happy when i hear people taking extra steps to have not only good health but also an overall improvement in their body composition. Point of correction here, having a big abdomen is not genetically predisposed. High intake of calories without expending them causes overall weight-gain with pot-belly inclusive. Now to your questions.
Since you have a pair of dumbbells, u can do the dumbbell curls, dumbbell flyes. But to make that stomach flat, you have to watch what you eat. Cut down on alcohol consumption drastically, avoid taking surgary drinks take water instead,minimize your carbs intake and increase your protein intake. Do some cardios like 3 times in a week like brisk walking,jogging,skipping the ropes. Do the weight-lifting exercise like 3 times in a week with 2 days rest interval in between. Since you are still a beginner, minimize the number of sets and reps. U can go for 5 sets of 10 reps for the dumbbell curls and 4 sets of 10 reps for dumbbell flyes.Do not push urself too much. Take it steadily and slowly and with time you will begin to see your strength rise as well as your muscles. you must have those visible abs on your abdomen.

To get lean and mean as a junk-yard dog, it is essential that my weights must be sourced from the junkyard, and the rustier the better.

Check out this family group photograph of my ultra-modern, high-tech Aba-Made weight collection. The bench press is made from car rims filled with concrete, which adds up to about 200 pounds, and another copy of that same weight is used for my squat rack, not shown in this picture.

The dumbells are fabricated from scrap-yard cylindrical iron chunks drilled and fitted with half-inch bar, welded in place for handles. I like them far better than standard purchased dumbells because when doing dumbell presses on the bench, I can drop mine lower, for deeper range of motion. The barbells are made from car engine flywheels, matched for balanced weight on each side. All I need for all my weight regime is right there in this picture, with the exception of the squat stand.

No over-priced gym for is going to make a dime off this iron-pumper, and so it shalt come to pass ha ha.

@papi wata, i am really feeling your gym apparatus. I usually tell people that it is not how beautiful your dumbbells or barbells is but how beautiful they make ur muscles become, that is what matters. Won't the casting of the barbells crack overtime?

Lets get started. How to look bulky and still remain lean?
It is not complicated to achieve this. It takes dedication, discipline, patience. Not forgetting to mention okay
1. CLEAN DIET
This cannot be over-emphasized enough. What then is clean diet? This is basically a diet that contains the neccessary nutrients to make those muscles grow like an er.ection. Protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and WATER. Muscles are basically protein and water. For me ,my proteins are very easy to get in this country. Beans, egg-whites, fish, chicken br..east without the skin, lean meat(i eat it on a rare occasion), peanuts and tigernuts. I do not take diary products. Yams, plantain,sphagetti, macaroni,white rice or brown rice, cocoyam.,oats.
Healthy fats is where people get it wrong. Healthy fats like mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats. Examples avocadoes, olive-oil, coldwater fatty fish like salmon,tuna,sardine, walnuts. Then fruits such as banana,oranges,mangoes,water-melon,cucumber,pawpaw,tomatoes

Oga Pristine thanks for your comments on my jungle gym. Those concrete weights were made many many years ago, and there are no cracks at all. Of course they are never dropped when I use them, so there is never any impact. I posted the picture to show that, just as you say, there is no need to spend a lot of money on fancy equipment, or expensive health club membership, to stay fit. Those crude items have served me very well over the years, and I intend to use them for many more years to come.

I've been away for a week on an academic field trip, so I have not been able to train with weights, but I've been doing some pushups and sit-ups.

Boss, it's been a while. Yea.. am still going at it hard. In fact, I recently got to my squats personal best ; 120kg. Was so ecstatic!!! Planning on going higher progressively.

Yes, it is very possible. A pair of dumbbells can do wonders to the muscles. Press-ups is also good for chest development. It is a kind of body-weight training just like pull-ups.
Being slim cannot stop you from becoming muscular. Remember nutrition/diet is as important as the exercises. You can go through the thread for some tips.
