Catfish breeding has being awesome... but the price and pricing from farmers and self proclaimed breeder(even if they can't identify female and male catfish) is crazy here in Ilorin. After multiple attempts using artemia feeds to feed with no success and finally getting results using live feeds. The farmers here are headstrong. . Pricing at 5/6/7 per fingerings.. ..particularly if they are Clarias..

My question is how much is fingerings and Juveniles in your area? And what size in centimeters are they?... Thanks I be looking forward to your experience and selling prices...

@Jonny thanks for the advice.

@BELEXY, no malice, if I see am I greet am. He is long forgiven but wil not involve him to sell my fish. Never.

Let me sell it at 500/kg I don't mind. I have started contacting buyers and I will not have issues selling my fish by the special grace of God.

He go surprise. When he told me he won't help me sell my fish I bluntly told him he is not needed and should watch me do my thing.

If I tell you guys that between last week and today that my fishes have change of hand and get feed consistently, they have changed in their sizes drastically. Just for a week! If she continued for the next three weeks tell me my result.

Abeg, I don't like cheats.

Na make next month reach buyers bokun. (plenty).

wink wink I like ur spirit. You av always been very optimistic and its good. Well thank God you are now a practicing fish farmer and about to enter d 'real' world of selling. You will get to see that even selling at N480 or N500 per kilo in Lagos can be very difficult and getting buyers can equally be very tasking (depending on the sizes of ur fish and ur location though) . Im talking frm experience bcoz i sell fish on a very regular basis. I say the story of fish farming as it is and not the fairy tale side of it. I was able to make bulk sales of my fish ytday at N550 and N530 per kilo. Dats not always the case, but im sure wt ur optimism u shd be able to sell at similar price. Plz do let us know how it goes wt sales of ur fish when u harvest. It will help a lot of other aspiring fish farmers.

#but biko, ejo, plz reconcile wt dat guy and involve him in getting good buyers for u. He doesnt av to be in charge of ur fishes any more. The more options of buyers u av, the better. I really need those his buyers of N600 per kilo smiley smiley wink wink

Another problem we face in the business is at point of sale. I don't buy the idea of meeting all those fish seller and telling them you have fish for sale. Since u went to meet them wt ur 2 legs, they would under price it ehn...nt like the reverse case. Oga abeg, I want to knw hw u approach this fish marketers cos for me, they tend to under price and there is no way I can bid higher cos I went to meet them and not reverse. The feed now are so expensive and I think selling at N480 is not a good bargain at all..N530 or N550 should be the current price...How I wish we have union and a uniform price tag...God help us.

@Belexy, wao am happy you sold your fishes at a price higher than 500 cos I remember some people did not believe when I said someone sold for 600.

550, you are getting to 600 soon OK.

Abeg no dey talk about that guy again for my ear. He thinks all my life depends on him and na na.

I don't place value on the 50 or more I might loose on per kg. He will go broadcasting I came begging him when I want to sell my fishes of which he has started lurking around the woman who feed my fish to get info on when I will be selling or so. I know he will come begging cos he get 20each per kg. But still will not allow his hands soiled with people's money on my fishes. He has eaten over 70k from me dubiously. I still have cases to make with him big time.

I have rest of mind my brother, he can't eat my money again.

Shwo.... I am with you on this one, you no go beg anybody to help you sell your fishes.. On the harvest day take with you two guys or if possible more than two to assist you on the sales, get a brand new scale and big basins like 5 to put your fish for weighing. be in charge of the sales, don't allow anybody use their basin, bowl or scale. They will try to mount pressure on you to be fast about the sales but don't relent.. And be aware of how many bowl you have weighed so far cos this women are so tricky, write the counts on a paper..

Abeg leave that guy, he will see you harvest those fishes in grand style.

Yes, the feeds now are a killer in price (whether locally made or foreign) coupled with this fuel crisis. In my area fuel is still expensive! But those buyers are very insensitive to our plight and we farmers are also not helping matters. Pple still sell fish for N470 and N480 per kilo. If thats d price in ur neighbourhood among farmers, its difficult to break away frm dat price bcoz nobody will patronise a more expensive seller.
With time u will av buyers dat will be calling u and not u calling them, but when u just start fish farming u will av to be the one to get lots of buyers' contacts and establish a frndly relationshp wt them.... U will beg, persuade, do shakara, flaunt, threaten grin etc... Lol. When u av a lot of buyers u can now weigh ur options and u wont be under too much pressure to sell at a particular price. The buyers dat came for my fish are my regular buyers and dey had already called me abt two weeks earlier if i had fish for sale. Despite the fact that i av lots of buyers, i still sometimes find it difficult selling my fish bcoz d prevailing prices might not be okay at dat point in time and if a fish buyer can get fish on someone's farm at N470 per kilo, they will never come to ur own farm to buy at N500 per kilo until they exhaust the fish on the other farmer's farm. It wasnt easy selling at N550 and N530 but i stood my ground bcoz i av already spent alot of money on fuel during d fuel crisis.

The gurus in the house, please I need your assistance. I noticed yesterday that some of the fishes in my pond have sores on their bodies as if they are attacking each other especially the small once but I also some have peeled skin at their back and around their head.

Secondly, the water is no longer turning into slight green but brown. though I suspect the water coming from the drainage of not been pure even though it look like clean water on the surface. once I reduced the pond's water and fresh one flows in, it will gradually turns brown and start smelling after 3days if no water flow in but the fishes are still feeding well.

What can I do to arrest this situation because the drainage water is the only source of water in the area.

@Robonski I would like to verify what the right stocking density for 10 x 10 tarpaulin pound would be for table size catfish and melange production.
Secondly I would like to also find out what would be the the ideal size for a primary and secondary hatchery ponds.

I think your fishes are suffering from finrot. Buy aquaceryl + for 300naira per sachet and mix with their feed as directed on the sachet. It will do the trick . Happened to me once. Hope it helps

I found a dead fish floating in my pond this night. This is d first time a dead fish would float in my pond. The fish had bloated tummy and was not killed by other fishes. I wonder what could have made this fish die cos I changed water abt 2 days ago and did not see or notice any sick fish.
Could it be the cold weather that killed d fish?

Theres no way u will not av some mortalities in ur pond frm time to time; its 'normal'.
If d other fishes are looking okay, then its nothing to worry about.
