I use this opportunity to commend the masterminds of NL on a job well done and the assistance they render the people through their ingenuity.

I believe I speak for the lovely people, including myself on this thread when I say that the subject of personal development is a crucial one that needs to be treated as such for our benefit and that of the unemployed, employed and self-employed, as well as students.

Because relationship building is relevant to all aspects of life - whether in business or in pleasure - and since relationship building begins with self-awareness and self-development, you cannot overemphasise the importance of personal development in our lives and the Nigerian society at large.

Since personal development is a vast subject that spreads all around life itself with as much topics as the issues of life, and as such not only encompassing other sections here, but also crucial to them and the forum in it's entirety - being a medium of social networking and relationship building, we humbly ask for the creation of a section of its own, totally dedicated to all things personal development, self-growth and motivation.

We appreciate your anticipated cooperation and support as we seek to bring aid and motivation to many as you have always done.

Thanks 4 this thread, I love it.

Hmmm....Bless your soul, dear. The day a colleague dropped those words into my ears, I almost wept in disappointment and depression. It's so sad we can live our entire lives to the end without even having a clear and unmistakable idea of what we wanted to become. It's a terrible situation that almost equals humans to the lesser animals. A life without a clear cut vision and purpose is a tragedy.

I has to go back home that day, pondered on the words for hours, drew up a plan, and I'm pursuing that plan with the utmost intensity and zeal. Plans tend to give us a direction, and you know how crucial direction is when destiny is considered.

Thanks for sharing. Happy Sunday, and God bless.

Thanks for the profound quote. Just a few days back I had watched the relationship between a mother elephant and it's baby. As soon as the baby was born, rather than suckle it, the mother had to kick and nudge it from the ground. There was NO time to waste lying down in a place it could be an easy target for the predators. There was simply no time to suckle first; it was safety first. After repeated attempts, the baby elephant stood on its feet and joined in the forward - moving mother. Such is the demand for survival in the animal world; such is the case with us humans.

Financial Mistakes That Almost Wasted My First Five Years Of Work!

I wrote the article below weeks ago. I believe someone here might be reading it the very first time.

A colleague and I were chatting this afternoon as we were having our break. And we discussed how far we have come, financially. We've not done too well. As we talked on, we all agreed we made certain financial mistakes that are responsible for our present financial status. We didn't arrive there by error; certain wrong habits are responsible, and it's these I intend to share with us. Maybe we can learn a thing or two.

Inadequate financial literacy: It took me over 3 years to even understand how money works. All I did was to get my salary, spent it and desperately waited till another came and the cycle never ended. Most of us do not really understand how money works, and our educational system never even dared to give us a crash course on money. We were simply bombarded with Fourier Series, Calculus and other theorems that do not really matter in the real scheme of life. Life is totally different. Money has rules and till we actually understand them, we won't do well financially.

[b]Impulse Spending
: This one is a killer. Most people are aware of this medium of waste. Practise this act and you're damn sure of being in lack. This was one major weakness I HAD. Not anymore. I've bought countless things purely on impulse. I didn't think through; I just bought. And the consequences of impulsive spending is poverty or lack. Now, I buy things when it's absolutely necessary. Emotions are a major factor when it comes to money. And the poor are always emotional when it comes to money. The rich have mastered their emotions. They only spend money when they want to meet their NEEDS. Only the poor and thieving politicians throw away money.

Indiscipline: To be rich requires work. Hard work. And the poor are averse to hard work. It takes a lot of discipline to follow a budget. I hardly followed my budget then. It takes a lot of discipline to think on the appropriate means to make more money. The poor only likes spending. And spending doesn't involve much work. Just dole out the cash and it's gone. It takes discipline to keep money. I lacked it too.

Inability To say NO : This was one major financial flaw I had back then. I can't recall ever saying NO anyone's financial demands. That was a fatal character flaw. You can't be wealthy meeting all of people's needs. I've practically taken loans to meet people's needs. Their needs never end. Now I know better. I still give but I won't hesitate to say NO if I have to. I've got to be true to myself. To be rich is to be sincere and prudent with money.

Especially when it comes to relatives and even.loved ones, one can hardly say NO. I had to work on myself. In the past years, it's being others before I. Now, no more. We erroneously believe people will die if we don't always meet their needs. Nothing could be further from the truth. Last December, I sincerely asked my parents to bear with my inability to meet their demands. They're still live and kicking. Even if you're there, people will live on. That's life. I know our African culture requires we shoulder others problems but there's clearly a limit, and we must endeavour to strike a balance. Keep spending the cash on them, and you're tagged a GOOD MAN. You will remain poor as far as you wanna be a good man. Good men are almost always poor cheesy

Careless giving: There have been countless times I've given out money immediately I saw some people. I just thought they needed. It's very good to give, but it must be done with wisdom. Money shouldn't be spent anyhow. Giving must be meaningful and purposeful. Now, I know better.

Trying To Impress Others: Sometimes we do it even without knowing. I've done this a few times. It's a terrible habit. We need to live realistic lives. And we must live within our means. It's silly to live an exaggerated life so as to impress some people. It's epic foolishness. Oftentimes those we intend to impress hard notice us. Why the bother? It another habit of the poor to try to give people a false sense of their financial status. Now, I don't give a hoot. I simply live MY life. Anyone can make their conclusions; it's their business.

Lack of Project: My first give years were indeed experimental. The errors are so depressing. Money must go somewhere. Nature abhors vacuum. Something must take your money. Since I didn't have my projects taking the money, others simply get me theirs. Wicked people. U go blame them? No. Blame me. Now, I've a lot of projects ongoing and I barely have enough for my self and loved ones, let alone OTHERS. No more vacuum.

Not Involving My Woman: Ego has hardly paid any man. It has caused more pain than it has given joys. I didn't actively involve my woman in my finances those years. Now I do. Women can be an oasis of wisdom. Mine is a bundle of financial wisdom. I've hardly listened to her. I used to just her the family upkeep and limited her foray. Now, she plays a crucial role in decision making and the results have been excellent.

If we don't make deliberate and conscious efforts at money, we won't be rich. If I understood these principles before now, I would have certainly being in a better position finally. This I know.

We need to start taking money seriously. When the chips are down, we're all left on our own. No one can eternally shoulder your problems. We need to be smart with our money. It hardly comes without effort. Why spend it without effort? Be disciplined. Enjoy with tomorrow in mind. It comes so fast. Without financial discipline, we will be stuck in the rat race forever. The rich are highly disciplined when it comes to money. They hardly give it away. That's why we hate them. We tag them as miserly and stingy. They simply understand how money works.

It's never too late to begin doing the right thing. Now, I hardly fall into these death traps. Take your financial future seriously. Work. Save. Invest. Give. Apply wisdom.

Please, avoid these financial mistakes. Follow them, and lack is sure. It takes a lot of discipline to be rich; that's why many are poor.

To be poor is the easiest thing to achieve in life. You do nothing to be poor. Just find excuses. And excuses abound. You don't need to look far.

Very great news. If we don't make conscious efforts to correct identified mistakes, we simply postpone misery and woes. The great responses occasioned by that thread also played a role in my creating this one. Thanks for your contribution there and here.

Keep being disciplined. Without discipline, all the mistakes be simply resurface in the future. Happy Sunday.

He's absolutely spot on. We had a meeting in my department sometime ago. And during the course of the meeting I had to disagree with one of my colleagues I'll deem we're very close pals. He didn't believe I could disagree with him. In fact that incident almost destroyed the friendship we've built over the years. We were able to finally settle out of court. LOL!

If we must be true to ourselves, then we must occasionally disagree with even the closest of our loved ones.

This is indeed a great thread, I must confess. Please I am about to embark on the same "journey" in school as an ND1 student (fresher).

We resumed some months ago, and I also want to start giving career talks in the class, starting from tomorrow, but I am crippled by the fear of failure and what people (fellow students) would say.

Please advice me on this. Thanks.

We're happy you're joining the boat of personal development and growth. We just have to work harder on ourselves.

I know stage fright is real and can go along way in scuttling our ambitions. From the first page I stated how I also was paralysed by my fear of failure as far as creating this thread was concerned. I paid more attention to failure than the benefits it could bring to people. That thought kept me lazying around for weeks. Thanks to God I was able to overcome it.

Well, you could gradually by talking to your room mates first. ...then seek to increase and widen the audience as time goes on. Try to speak on an area you're well knowledgeable. No matter how prepared you are, you are likely to still feel that tension in the opening minutes. Talk to your mirror over and over again. Practise. Focus on the goal, not the difficulty.

I see a true leader in you like everyone else on this thread, for as long as you seek to give career talks in class, you do possess a desire to support others to become the best they can be and that is a big enough goal to propel you to success. I really like my boss @Dearpreye's post, as it really does deal with this issue appropriately when he said 'Focus on the goal not the difficulty'.

In addition to that, I say you should never fear failure, for every success stems from failure. Failure is the ingredient that makes us better in our goals. Failure is not the end of the line, but just an aid to give a much better comeback. Thomas Edison once said, "I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won't work". That is to say, never see a failure to accomplish something as a failure of that goal, but see it as a motivation that with a little tweaking you are gonna get it right. So failure is out of the equation with such mentality and so therefore what people would say is irrelevant, for honestly many of those people would wish they have the courage you have to stand there and speak to them.
From experience I know that many people possess that stage fright - that reminds me of a current threat to android devices by the same name 'stagefright' that has been pronounced to be one of the worst at the moment - and find it a big issue to address a group of people.

Let me give you some practical methods to conquer that problem. As soon as you can get this, I want you to sit down by yourself and ask yourself if the risk of talking to the class is more than the rewards of the message and aid you offer the class through your speech. Obviously the reward is much more than the risk - even though I would like for you to determine this on your own, for the sake of time before the event I decide to help you see the more beneficial - so thinking about the rewards alone, your drive to help your class would give you a joy and satisfaction to help you to go all out. Please do make sure that your core values is to help your class, for that is what matters the most.

You don't need to look far.

thank you sir, and this is one of many reasons why a section is needed,,. This inspired post would have been a topic.

Be a man of value, and success will come after you- Albert Einstein.

It's not strange for people to pay more attention to a product than the process. That's wrong. We should rather pay more attention to become better persons and then success will naturally follow us. We must endeavour to become a people of value.

People pay attention to those who have value. They pay for their services. Success is a product; adding value is the process.

Work harder on yourself than you do on your job. Jim Rohn said " if you work hard on your job, you'll make a living. But if you work hard on yourself, you'll make a fortune".

What are those areas you need to improve in your life? Your dressing? Your grammar? You know them! Work on those areas and see success attracted to you.

Two years ago I did a certification in my career. The payment came from my pocket. The course was challenging and expensive. But I passed it. And then I told some colleague of mine who introduced me to some people seeking a training in that regards. Of course, I didn't hesitate. I organised the training during my off duty days and got some cool cash, plus a big piece of chicken and a THANK YOU. Ever since then, I hardly allow a year pass without a certification.

Opportunities abound for the prepared and willing ones.
