Why is it that non of you are talking of learning basic skills like mixing and pouring concrete or carrying bricks manually up three floors? I think it will be a good physical exercise, especially for our returnee brethren who have been missing the Nigerian action cheesy

I vote for DIY concrete casting for your Foundation cheesy

I actually have work clothes, boots and kidney belt packed in my luggage for my trip in a few weeks to do my fence. I intend to do just that, move blocks and get into it.

But I won't work with wet concrete or dry cement, too toxic for me.

Been following your thought process with @skimanski
My own opinion here..

I think what mechanization does is to Increase Efficiency, reduce cost of labour in the LONG RUN, reduce safety risk

Basically, in terms of comparative cost, machines are better. But
you have to consider project size, economy, client and price of labour just like @skimanski said.

-These machines cost ALOT to buy and maintain
-They need trained professionals to operate them at a cost.

You cannot expect me to move into a site with equipments running into millions of naira into a site where the BABA IJEBU wants to pay so low.

Oga @ericko2k2 and other people living in the diaspora, you know that Technicians charge you per hour, right? Convert that 50-100$ per hour to Naira and I know damn well you can't pay it here..

For the example of a tiler, you expect a Nigerian tiler who has taken pain to buy a laser lever, a spirit level or some other expensive machine and then price him at 200 per sqm and expect a flawless job. But there will always be someone else to do it for cheaper and that's what you get with fallen parapets n so on.. What you pay for is what you get.

I have experience in Robotics and Automation. When experts are flown in, they spend 2hrs on the machine, take 5 hours to smoke in the open and they are done with work for that day taking home 7hours pay.

We know it's hard to make those dollars in the West but the way we expect things to work here while condemning our underpaid artisans is bad.

The DIY process is actually the way forward. It will save you lots of cost

On another tangent, why would I even consider an outfit that doesn't have the basic, in my opinion, equipment like concrete mixer? What separates a true professional builder from Baba Biliki the Brikila with his hand mixing?

We in diaspora take these things as being normal for the job. Having a concrete mixer, laser level, etc are items that the most rudimentary tool/equipment a seasoned bricklayer that wants to be taken seriously should have in his arsenal.

I expect a tiler to have the required tools to guarantee a bang up job. What I don't expect him to do is try to compare what I pay in Los Angeles with what I will pay in Ibadan. If he wants to earn us fees then United and Delta has daily flights to the U.S.

grin Oga spyder, since the topic is mechanization, we can actually hire a hanger crane at 500,000 naira per day to carry about 40blocks per trip up to the 3rd floor.. I'm sure someone can afford it..

Its either you change the processes in Nigeria, or the procedure in Nigeria will change you. cheesy

So I intend to start by changing my little slice of heaven in Ibadan.

I'll make sure that every artisan that I work with leaves with new knowledge and tools.

As an example I am shipping for a laser leveler that I will use on my property. I wouldn't mind giving it away after I'm down with it in the hopes that it will help someone elevate his skill set.

You've just highlighted another hang up that I have with Nigeria.

Why do we need a hanger crane when a simple pulley system or conveyor belt will do the same with very little cost.

haa BABA, we go mix concrete with mixer, that screeder wont be a bad idea, the retail £300 I might just get one if I find a good source to ship it.I think the way it is now anyone with hands can mix concrete thanks to the humble mixer and the standard ration we have all learnt so far

So let's make the bet interesting.

If I win you get to provide free labour for my fence - 1,500 blocks (I'll still supply the materials), if you win then I give you $1,000 cash.

Eyin eniyan mi, EgunMogaji has thrown down the gauntlet grin

You have to use your fancy concrete mixer AND THE ENGINEER (the specific one not just anyone) must be onsite every day to measure the fence grin

you can have a sizeable three bedroom flat with good space to pack 3 vehicle in front of the building.

something like this can enter the plot comfortably:
three bedroom each : 12ft x 12ft
three toilet each : 4 x 8ft
kitchen : 8ft x 8ft
dining : 8ft x 8ft
living room : 16 x 14ft
store : 4 x 4ft

total floor area = 1024square feet
plot size = 2000square feet

U r just full of calculations sir, I like dat.

Oga Egunmogaji, This pulley system. Does it transfer things from a low to high level or from a high to low level? What's the maximum load it can carry? How many blocks will I carry till the belt wears off? And of course I know it must have a Programmable Logic Controller like Allen Bradley or Siemens which is expensive to operate and experts are needed for writing its "languages".

Hanger cranes can be used to carry concrete weighting several tonnes.

Secondly, can CLIENTS cope with the increase that using this equipments will cause to their budget?

All I can tell you is that it works very well here and there's no reason that it can't work equally well in Nigeria. There's nothing like a single chip of computer in any of the ones that I've seen used and some are truck mounted. They normally use it over here to deliver shingles to rooftops. No experts needed - again Nigerian over thinking of simple stuff.

Hanger cranes is an over kill for a 3 story structure. It doesn't have to be a straight shot to the 3rd floor from ground zero, you can offload on each floor as you build upwards.

Clients, at least like me, will gladly rewards any company that reduces manual labour in it's operations. I literarily cry whenever I see the old women fetching water at construction sites.

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by kopell: 1:52pm On Aug 26, 2015
@Egunmogaji, sometimes is better not to try and prove a point that things can be done in what we called engineering control, faster and cheaper. Many people don't understand that in west, they don't pay for what you can do, but pay one more for how safe you can do the job. Because liability cost more then the wages. Nigeria as enough young people to work. I rest my case !!!!!

Plz see the two cranes I posted both less than 50k to buy minus shipment in the Uk,the first one has 1000KG capacity, the 2nd one has 1500KG capacity, one bag of cement is 50KG,so can lift 10 bags in one go.Does this answer any of you suspicions?

Do you have any idea on how one can buy a simple batching plant with capacity to batch about 1cubic meters of concrete per mix?

That is why we should try and get basic skilz of DIY ehe, why pay to tile a room if you can do it urself on saturday morning with a good bottle of non alchoholic rosey grin grin grin

When you wake up by 4am in Lagos to go to the office and return home by 11pm everyday and doing that for 5 days, on a Saturday morning, the last thing on your mind is to go and do DIY of tilling a floor. Just try that and within a short time, when the person drops dead, his people will start blaming the old witch in the village. grin grin grin

Abroad, you have no option than to do DIY because paying a technician over there is expensive. Calculate the hourly wage in a place like UK or US and multiply that by 8 hours of work and then convert to Naira and then compare that to what you have to pay here, you will see why you do not have to bother yourself on DIY for little things.

To wash my car at a car wash place, i will likely pay N500. Is it because of N500 that i should disturb my peaceful sleep and rest from stress to go and do DIY of washing the car?.

Nigeria is not unique, people get up early here too. We have traffic too.

I don't take my cars to car wash, I wash them myself because I enjoy working on my cars but I do feel guilty because I use more water than the car wash and I don't recycle like they are required to.

I do woodwork, build sheds, rebuild engines, restore cars not because mechanics or builder are expensive, not all of them are, I do them because I actually enjoy it.

I've seen bicyclists on Nigerian roads, I've seen rc helicopter pilots in Nigeria, etc somehow these folks manage to do these non essential stuff despite the rigors of Nigeria.

I think we need more automation and the use of advance equipment in building construction.

Most of our rise building ( two floors and above) are poorly built structurally mainly due to poor batching of concrete. The average C20 or C25 concrete end up having much less strength due to poor handling of constituent aggregates and water quantity.

Almost all the raft slab, floor slab, beam work I have seen here on nairaland are either poorly reinforced ( not following standard detailing procedure in placement of steel work) or poorly batched and placed concrete.

I am of the opinion that better concrete batching techniques is needed to reduce the incident of poorly placed concrete, and also contractors and building proportionals need better understanding of structural detailing and analysis of structural members

It will work if you want it to work and it won't if you don't want it to cheesy

So this is part of the reason why a lot of us in diaspora gets into DIY. It's not because we're cheap or workers are expensive. It's partly because we have cheap access to quality tools and materials.

A perfect example is the blueprint for my build. I got tired of explaining my idea to architects, so I simply downloaded SketchUp and drew it out once and for all.

I have table saw, a commercial grade Ryobi, beveling miter saw, jigsaws, etc engine hoist, car ramps, engine stands, etc all professional grade stuff
