Just imagine this scenerio playing out somewhere on the street of Lagos: several women gathering together in name of ‘virginity testing’ and you as a lady is expected to remove your pant in public to determine whether you are you are still a ‘chasis’ or ‘tokunboh’ down there….hian!

The virginity test is a practical process by which a female is determined if she is a virgin or not, in a nutshell it is knowledge of whether a girl has engaged in sexual intercourse or not.

Much has been said for and against the practice with the ‘gladiators’ doing battle in the arena of society but the fact is the virginity test in Africa is as old as the hills which may continue for years to come.

On March 23, 2011, Amnesty International protested to the Egyptian government over the virginity test forced on women protesters, a move they referred to as ‘nothing less than torture’.

The test involves the inspection of the female hymen, the hymen being in place signifies her virginity but a torn hymen shows that sexual intercourse has occurred for it can only be torn by this process.

Virginity testing especially in Africa can be described as crude, controversial and unethical because of the methods some which include putting two fingers in the vagina to test for its flexibility, a process which is called the ‘two finger test’.

Virginity tests in Africa vary in the different regions, girls of the Kenuzi tribe from Sudan are married before their age of puberty by adult males who would inspect them manually for their virginity.

Virginity tests in Africa has been hotly debated by two schools of thought, those who are support of it and those who say that the practice is a relic of a lost age in these modern times. The former state their point a female’s pride is having her hymen intact, a proof of her maturity for marriage. A proof of blood on a white handkerchief is displayed to all present including the new bride, her husband to be and their parents.

The argument of the antagonists is that such crude laws should have long been done away with as it belongs to the forgotten Stone Age and not these modern days of civilization. They also argue that the virginity test is more of a sexist bomb which okays sexual intercourse outside the home for men but frowns heavily on women, a case of what is good for the goose is not good for the gander.

The question i will pose here is this: Is this kind of ‘testing’ being done in Nigeria?

Yes, it was done in Nigeria until recently. Does the name Mosunmola Oladipo ring a bell? She's Miss Virgin Nigeria 2015. And according to the founder of the Miss Virgin pageant, one Adunni Adediran, the girls that took part in the competition were manually tested just to make sure that they were indeed virgins before being allowed to part take.
