Obviously there's no place like home, but when "home" is a keg of gun powder i'd rather be a migrant. And yes, all your lofty dreams are easy to display here on NL but you and i know both know what's up, don't we? wink

And there's nothing wrong with being an immigrant, almost all my families are here in the States. Dreams are easy to achieve if you believe, it's all about God directing you and favor finding you...... wink wink

You seriously should consider writing as a career. Your piece is short but the best I've ever seen on Nairaland. Jeez, you are an amazing writer.

Thanks for the beautiful lie

Every country has its ups and downs, most of the defects with Nigeria is because of poverty, with money things seems a lot brighter. I have many friends from wealthy families and when they come to visit me in the U.S, they spend heavily and I'm always amazed! This type of people have made 9ja their paradise and are enjoying their life. I look at myself and realize I spend more time at work than anywhere else, for some they enjoy it but for me the entrepreneurial spirit in me is screaming to be free. I mentioned having a maid, a gateman and a driver but you took it as being an oppressor, you really have to change your thinking! You should see it as providing employment for the unemployed, in Africa labor is cheap, it's not about oppressing but paying for services. I wouldn't be able to afford that in the US of A! You also mentioned 365 days of power supply, I can have that too in 9ja, I'm a big believer of solar and alternative energy. You mentioned safety but fail to realize God is the ultimate protector, I grew up in Mushin, schooled in Ijebu, served in Borno, I was safe throughout. There's no place like home my guy grin grin grin
Yes every country have up and down
Nigerian is going backward
Electricity was better 28 year ago, If we didn't have light for two hour, we think the world is coming to an end
No Water today its all Bore Hole water--- water supply was better 28 year back

That is why a new government was voted in and if they don't perform, they'll be voted out and another one would come in till we get it right, Nigerians are waking up little by little, not like 1999 or 2007 when majority of voters were clueless.

Without hope there's nothing! It is hope and grace that took an immigrant working at a grocery store all the way to the number 1 Auto insurance company in the US of A, it is that same hope and grace that took him from an associate all the way to management, be hopeful!

Of course, after going thru military rule and then starting a young democracy it is expected that the country would need some type of rebuilding. Nigeria is bad right now but remember it is less than 60 years old, America at 164 years old dealt with poverty so bad that people started dying of starvation, they called it the Great Depression. Look at America now!

You will enjoy coming to America.
You said you do fix Dstv cables & earn 120k a month ?? If you do that type of work here you will be earning like 500k every month.
America has a lot of job opportunities, you can't look for jobs, there are a lot of jobs here & they're begging people to come do the jobs.
A cleaner earns $180 every week.
The bad side of America is you pay taxes in everything you buy.
The things you think is legal in Nigeria will land you in jail here.
You must have a car insurance.
If you speed above the speed limit with your car, the security camera on the roads will record your speeding and send it directly to the patrol police vehicle & a police car will stop you within few seconds and you will be issued a ticket, if you act foolishly, you will go to jail immediately.
The only thing i miss about Nigeria is the liberty to do what i want.
There are many other things but i will add you on WhatsApp, so if you have any more questions, feel free to ask me.

What happens after getting your US citizenship?
I know tonnes of people who already became US citizens and can't even use their US passports for anything. They are simply buried in their bills to think of traveling anywhere.
All they can brag about is being a US citizen, which is crap when they are stuck with working for 35-40 years in someone else's country.
They eventually return to Nigeria waiting for their social security checks and possibly be buried in their motherland when they eventually die. Many of them never own anything in Nigeria, yet their nephews and nieces own homes they built. In return, the returnees will brag again about the huge homes they have in the US, technically owned by the US banks for the 35 year mortgage they agreed to.

#10 is just the beginning of the journey bro. All the homeless people we see in the US no be US citizens? It could have being from their choices though.

Those that diligently went through the steps you highlighted to become US citizens and end up with good jobs still know modern-day slavery when they see it. They just don't complain because their home country aint any better.

You may be new to the US or just don't get the full picture yet...

I live in the US too, and I do have US citizenship as well, I just look at a bigger picture than what the system attempts to make me think.
There is really no where like home, let's keep that on our minds before getting in too deep into what the foreign system wants us to be, which in my opinion is similar to what our enslaved ancestors were to them.
And I thought I was the only smart one. To summarise what this guy just said. 30 years from now in that u.s, what will be your legacy? You can't even own a home or own a piece of land. At best you'd be an immigrant with with children that have no roots. Even with your citizenship the best you can be in the u.s is a minority

Not sure I'll move back to Nigeria, it however pays me to flip-flop between both countries. Both places have opportunities. When one however finds himself entirely immersed in the system in a foreign country, it's difficult to know what their home country has to offer.

So, in my opinion, the smart ones are the ones that choose to leave the comfort of a foreign country sometimes and explore what they can do to make their home country better, or better still setup something at home.

Then that makes you a hypocrite, somebody reading all you said about US and living there will think that you will be taking the next available flight back to Nigeria. If US is that bad for foreigners and got nothing to offer you then why are you still there?

I've heard that before several times. I was actually born here in the US by Nigerian parents, but I lived in Nigeria through most of my adolescent ages. I came back to the US about 12 years ago right after I graduated in Nigeria. So I have a decent knowledge of what's happening where I was raised especially with helps from following up with current happenings that I read about in forums like this.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the US or any country for that matter. I never even mentioned coming back to live in Nigeria, so where did you get that from?

I can be either in Nigeria or the US for however long I want, I chose to be where favors me at the moment. I visit Nigeria quite often but chose not to live there at the moment even though I have investments back there.

Why leave a place with good roads, steady electricity, safety, steady income, etc to return to loud generator noise, police/area boys extortion etc, weird judicial system etc?
It was ok when I lived there, for me today, it's not same in every other country ive visited, and I choose not to go backwards.

So, why do u think I'm a hypocrite? Cos I chose to live elsewhere ?

Oya clap for yourself, in your eyes you've actually said something reasonable grin grin grin . It's people like you with nothing that usually make the loudest noise, I stay in a $250,000 house in a nice neighborhood but it doesn't mean I'm not aware of good, hard working people who live in poor communities due to the hard economy so your premise of people like that being a dredge to society is not only whack but moronic! You stay in Southern California and you are shouting, your state is in a deep mess, it's broke and suffering from drastic drought so if I were you I wouldn't brag too much grin grin grin . Finally, you called me a visa lottery winner JJC, why would I play visa lottery when both my parents have been U.S citizens for over 20 years, my people perish for lack of wisdom, get sense my broad, get sense!

Odedimu, just as I suspected your reality is the life you live. Hope you weren't trying to impress me with your POS 250k starter home grin

The America I know is TOLERANT but I sorrowing myself with educated people and not dredges of its society.

Why shouldn't we close our borders to protect our people? That's not being intolerant but being responsive.

Like I said get out of that Deep South and come out to civilization.

With your kind of sense even an amoeba is intelligent.
