The comptroller-general of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), has ordered the immediate removal of rice from import restriction list and the re-introduction of import duty payment at land borders.

The public relations officer of Customs, Mr Wale Adeniyi, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, said that the restriction was only applied at land border stations before now, adding that the customs boss had lifted restriction on rice at border stations.

He said that all rice imports through land borders by rice traders would attract the prevailing import duty of 10 percent, with 60 percent levy. Rice millers (preferential levy) with valid quota allocation would also attract duty rate of 10 percent with 20 percent levy on rice importation.

“Over the years, importation has been restricted to the seaports because border authorities have found it difficult to effectively monitor and control importation of rice.

“When the decision to ban it (rice) was taken, it was not an effective measure because the smuggling of the product thrives with people using different means of conveyance, including small trucks, bicycles and even animals – putting them on donkeys and some actually carry it on their heads.

“These new measures will be for Customs to recognise their anti-smuggling operations in the border areas and ensure that all those importers through the borders bring their rice through approved routes and pay their extant duty

“Before the ban on rice importation, Customs had placed different rates of levy on rice imports – 30 percent levy was placed on rice millers (preferential levy) and 70 per cent for rice importers. The purpose was to encourage local production.

Do you actually think before commenting or are you a programmed robot to automatically kiss ass no matter how stupid the proposal is.

This has basically destroyed all Jonathan and Adesina's efforts to boost local rice production.
Only big time rice smugglers like the Vaswani brothers would benefit from this. As always, Change undecided.

E remain frozen chicken o! grin grin

I hope the price of a bag of rice reduces drastically. How can a bag of rice be sold for 5k at Seme and when it gets to lagos,it is sold between 9 to 12k depending on the brand? That's too expensive!

Nevertheless, the local farmers should not be discouraged. I still eat my Ofada rice anytime, anyday. cheesy cheesy

Tax it heavily and let those who can afford it pay for it while making locally produced rice more competitive. The problem with Nigeria though is that the local farmers may soon start competing (price wise) with the imported products making their produce unattractive.

We're now importing rice?

Can Nigeria just be good at something besides oil?

Can I ever say "My country Nigeria exports textile, cocoa, chicken, rice, palm oil technology etc to other countries"?

How many time did u eat local rice this year?
Don't u think the imported rice u have been eating were smuggled in?
Don't u think these smugglers enriched the labouring countries?
Oga Rome was not built in a day, before we can ban foreign rice outrightly ,let our supply out way our demand.

wetin u know self? the your "acclaimed self sufficient rice production" cannot feed Lagosians one day not talk of the whole Nigeria.
How many of these your self sufficient rice dhey for market?
Do u know how many tonnes of rice smuggled into this country per day?

NB I'm not against local production but when locally made food supply can not meet-up the demand of a nation, then why banning the importation ? that's criminal

Thousands of hectares of rice farm were recently washed away by flood in the north, this will definitely affect the availability of locally produced rice in the market and results in scarcity.

“Over the years, importation has been restricted to the seaports because border authorities have found it difficult to effectively monitor and control importation of rice.

Besides there was no total ban on importation of rice, this directive as it were only affect the product importation through land borders
