Worked aa banker for 6years. Was a teller then was transfered to the transactions/transfer desk.

It was not easy seriously.. as a teller I think i must have paid upto 100k total at different times due to shortages

The work schedule.is crazy. Sometimes if the vault is not balanced we dont go home till 9pm. Of course we resume work at 7.30am.

Had to move to transactions cuz being ashmatic dusty notes counting took a toll on.me. Thats another story wink

At my new duty post it was another kettle of fish..that gist would come later..

i dey my new job now and if you must know..its a thrill to be free from mails which turn out to be issues grin.

those of you thinking about going back to lecture halls, back in the university, I am certain you Were among those that ridiculed education students claiming to be in banking and finance, marketing and insurance departments, forming superior students. now you are thinking of going back to d same classroom you ridiculed, i just wish the educational sector will formulate strict policies against human being's from other sectors flooding the education sector and destroying the sector for us! "if you studied banking in school, go back to the bank. if you studied marketing, go back to the streets. go and market goko cleanser. live the classrooms and lecture halls for educationist "

I'm an ex-banker. I resigned exactly a year ago after 5 years and I'm so so glad I did.

Working as a marketer at the bank was the most depressing, demeaning and frustrating experience I've ever had.

Today, I look back and think, "Why didn't I leave sooner?". Now I have peace of mind and in a job I absolutely enjoy when compared to the bank job and family life has never been better.

Once I was blind, now I can see!

Nahhhh. Don't!
Workforce is contract ops, if I'm not mistaken.
As contract staff, you don't have to attend to ATMs or balance the bulk cash. You do your normal deposit, withdrawal, transfers, etc and you balance at the end of the day.

Once done, you wait for bulk room to balance, then you go home.

Maybe I've oversimplified things o. But contract staffs don't have access to a lot of the nitty-gritty in ops. For security reasons.

[quotmy. e author=musco4me post=38910065] Am a banker but i hate banking work so much. U cant even have time for urself and ur family. I never wanted to be a banker but unemployment pushed me to banking because i needed to survive. Am still thinking of other biz i will engage myself in and also lookn for a non banking job. Within the 2 and half years in bankn, i hv worked as funds transfer officer, customer service officer, headteller/Atm custodian. Keeping watch over the atm is the most stressful thing u can do if ur bank is a leading bank in nigeria and if ur branch has 3 to 6 atms that need serious attention due to so much traffics on them. Ileave my house b4 6.30am so that i attend to atms and put them in order b4 8am wen monitoring starts. I still go home late cos u still have to wait till 6pm wen monitoring ends. Banking is not a job ooooooo. No weekend for u, )

We shared similar roles I left the industry after seven years. One thing I knew then was the pay was handy and those with that priveledge of saving up to 100 k per month can make the most out of it while it last. Most things we feel compelled to do can wait especially big spending. When you are in operations unit you can dictate your spending better. It was a good job could have been better with astute financial plans and shrewd saving. But no a bad job to get @ 23 in a tight Nigerian job economy . Use what you earn today and build your tommmow. Train' develop, invest . Delayed gratification. It wasn't easy to practice but the bit I did is my buoy today

I think those in ops have it better when it comes to banking. Especially when you're a struggling marketer, you wish you were in ops.

No monthly performance reviews, no insults for not bringing money....

But we have people that studied education in the banks, in the oil sector and in politics and other sectors.
How would you feel if educators are restricted to the education sector and education sector only??
Do you think 99percent of you guys would have a job

Secondly, education goes beyond what you learnt in the class room.
Sometimes, schools need people with cognate experience In different sectors to tutor the students in order to produce better and well rounded students.

Obviously, someone that has been in the class room all their life cannot have the experience need to teach subjects that goes beyond classrom...

Youre welcome. No need to thank me.

Not trying to rain on your parade but there needs to be a distinction between a banker and a bank employee. Loads of people working in banks have the misconception that they are bankers when they aren't. All support staff ancillary to banking operations are NOT bankers (well...apart from the top level managers that set policy) how in God's name is an ICT staff a banker? It's like saying a lab scientist is a doctor cos both work in a hospital or a paralegal is a lawyer cos s/he works in a law firm. I'm not advocating the superiority of one profession over another but if we are truly educated and professional as we claim then we must use the right terms. Not all banking staff are bankers just like not all hospital staff are doctors. Banking is a profession not an employer.

Hmmmm. Guy, if ur an atm custodian in ................... Bank of Nigeria, u will be fightn daily with ur oga because of atm issues and the monitoring. I dnt want to mention the banks name. In this particular bank, atms are strictly monitored and any cash jam or no netwk or cash out on the atm at the wrong hour, ur oga go battle seriously wit u as if ur the cause. I still maintain my stand. I hate bankn but unemployment pushed me to bankn.

Let me add my 2 and half years of experience working in a bank.

I work in one of the Risk Management sections of the Bank (Risk Management can either be Credit, Market or Operational). I can understand what people in branch, most especially the Marketers go through; it isn't an easy stuff. The ATM Custodians have their own ; they must ensure ATMs are up and paying.

Well, I'm actually enjoying where I am, there is career development and advancement, I can switch to other industries and apply my experience. I've seen colleagues who left to non-banking industries.

Some people here have said working in the Head Office is better, but they forgot that staff in HOs pass through different work stress. Almost all banks in Nigeria have their HO on the island. Traffic is a serious issue on the island. Imagine staying in the traffic for over 2hours before home. This is almost a daily occurrence. One has to leave home before 6am to avert traffic. People stay behind in the office till 9pm before leaving.

Banking is actually challenging, people who left banking to other industries didn't find hard to blend.

I'm passively searching for non-banking jobs even though I'm comfortable where I am. I've had an exit plan since I joined banking. I have period of time to stay.

Did you get your new job before leaving the banking industry? Or after leaving.
Did you get promoted in that 5 years you were in marketing?

I got a new job after I left even though I would not advice that but I was just fed up. I guess I was just fortunate. And Yes, I was promoted within those 5 years.

I was sacked then by oceanic bank on Dec 21st 2009. It was the first tsunami. I felt like i would die. Like all hope was lost. But then i picked myself up, wrote a couple of professional exams including ican. Also enrolled for masters. Life was not easy then i must tell you. But i had tym to try several tyns same tym. 6 months after i lost dat, i got a small job dat still gave me time to run all my programmes comfortably. However, i dint have spare money for grooves and chicks like i did then in oceanic.

Finally in 2013, i landed my current job( oil and gas). There was an advert for chatered accountant. I apllied and got it. Tuday, i don hammer........ Small.

My advice. If u r not business inclined, dat is if u still hope to work for somebody, whiile you are doin your bank job, upgrade yourself academically, it wunt be easy oo, but it will pay you someday when the chips are down. Best of staff have lost thier job in banking, so no superstar i must tell you.
