I am a banker with over 7years in the industry. It has its up and down. But overall, it is a learning curve for me because I see it as a calling. Although I am in branch operations, the stress, the insecurity of job, etc are few of the challenges I face on daily basis. I will foray into something else later in my career but not too far from banking.

Not everyone is cut out for business.
But everyone can save.
.
As an ops staff, I am almost the first to resume work daily and last to leave. Little time for anything else.
I make sure i spend my free time resting. Enough stress during the week/day, last thing I would do is go 'hangout' at COB with Sales people who probably closed at 5pm and have rested enough.
.
If you are a custodian, I beg, spend all your free time resting.
Too many stories of custodians slumping and dying.
.
I am not extravagant, I live within my means, and I save.
.
No loan to tie me down or give me sleepless nights.
.
I aspire. I am hoping to develop myself educationally.
.
And I save some more.
The day the job ends, I don't want a lien on my account due to indebtedness... and I want my savings to carry me on till i get a new job....

Wow...... this thread is an eye-opener. I feel so much sympathy for bankers right now. Initially, I envied the clean and expensive looks synonymous with bankers. But I later learnt about the pain behind the looks and fat salaries. This thread is even more revealing. A friend of mine who worked in FCMB 2008/2009 used to complain about the dress codes. The type and colour of shirts they could wear was literally dictated to workers back then. He is an Engineering graduate so he has since ported to Hali.
To the aspiring bankers, there is no point being discouraged. Learn from the experiences of the old horses and pursue your goals still. It's not easy in most places or any human endeavor. Ask Doctors, students nko (except for the ajebo schools o). I have an habit though, I am a chronic investor. So take a cue from those that have gone ahead of you. Save and invest before you spend a kobo. Have a plan too.

Rarely will you see a head office staff who doesn't enjoy the job. Ebiz and remedial management are offices situated in Head office, if I'm not mistaken.

So what are you up to now....

They are head office units however, I once had a terrible group head who is of blessed memory now.
I'm back in school improving my human capital.

The way people are castigating bank job makes me wonder if I work in the same bank. Banking is really stressful I must say but if u are a core staff the pay is very commensurate with the stress. The problem is most people want to take home a six digit pay for doing nothing. I worked in an IT firm immediately after NYSC which was as stressful as my current job but the salary is not up to what I get as meal allowance currently.
I ditched a state civil service job for my current job and I have never regretted it. The stress is there but when I remember the alert that wakes me up on the 3rd week of every month I don't remember the stress anymore.
I have achieved in less than 2yrs what I wouldn't have achieved if I was in the Civil service or my previous job in 6yrs.
I have friends with nice grades who are doing teaching jobs for less than 50k monthly. I need not tell you how stressful such jobs are plus the irregularities of the pay hence planning becomes difficult.
If you find yourself as a permanent staff you should be grateful cos thousands if not millions won't mind dat job for double the stress sef.

PS..am writing this from the perspective of a permanent staff of a bank, I know it's a different experience as a contract staff. The bottom line is to have an exit plan and develop yourself while on the job. Bad mouthing a job that pays your bill or has been a stepping stone to where you are today isn't cool..

I joined banking in 2006 and spent just 7 years, 3 years in operations and 4 years in marketing. I resigned in 2013. To start a Market support initiative.

I choose to become an entrepreneur because I was just sincere to myself. Business road was rough but thanks to International Seed Grants some like opportunities.

I'm just two years in business and I'm making good progress everyday.
It took me 2 years to convince my wife that I'm quitting, and after quitting, I need to quickly downgrade first.

Choose a better and affordable school
Learn to save every kobo
Learn not to be stupid with crazy shoppings
Learn to budget for inlaws (even my inlaws gave me good rest, as they know their inlaw is not a banker anymore)

Its was a crazy career, so lousy with lots of debts and gbese.

People don't care how you feel, all they keep asking you is "Are you still working with XXXbank)

For young minds its a good place to start for exposure (I mean Age 23 - 28)
I married a Banker too, but my wife resigned when we had our baby, then 5 years later me too.

We are proud Ex-bankers, we worked when the industry was really a great place to work.

I personally believed that I will do better in business but I need corporate Exposure, and my Bank gave me. My mentor was Late Tayo Aderinokun, and I was privileged to attend his burial ceremony before my quit

I can tell you that I have achieved more than when I was a banker.

I'm a GHP Trainer with GEMS4 Project & COLEACP
On Good Agricultural Practices and Making Market Work for the Poor. CEO of Kowafresh

For aspiring bankers, this mans post summarizes it all.

The only thing you gain working in a bank is the salary.

This is exactly the problem I have with the job.

The bank attempts to buy your life, your time , your everything.

And I disagree, a federal job pays comparatively with banking, more stable and lesser stress.

To each his own sha...

Worked aa banker for 6years. Was a teller then was transfered to the transactions/transfer desk.

It was not easy seriously.. as a teller I think i must have paid upto 100k total at different times due to shortages

The work schedule.is crazy. Sometimes if the vault is not balanced we dont go home till 9pm. Of course we resume work at 7.30am.

Had to move to transactions cuz being ashmatic dusty notes counting took a toll on.me. Thats another story wink

At my new duty post it was another kettle of fish..that gist would come later..

i dey my new job now and if you must know..its a thrill to be free from mails which turn out to be issues grin.

Hmmmm so I have read it all up to this point and really it's discouraging even though no better option exists now and considering the fact that the banking sector is one of the highest employers of Labour outside the civil service currently.

But please ex-bankers and bankers is there no body or organization that can stand up on behalf of bankers to address these anomalies bankers are passing through in this country as you have rightly lamented, and pls the hardship currently doled out to bankers here, is it commensurate to what obtains to bankers in other countries?

Banking , a bitter sweet job and career.
Re: For Bankers, Ex Bankers And Bankers To Be by jeamah1(m): 11:03pm On Oct 12, 2015
I have judiciously gone thru all post. Must confess am motivated and discouraged at same time. Learnt many and read tru some people experience. One thing is similar to all experience. Non satisfaction(left or want to leave).I ve worked with two top Nigeria bank with just 2/half yrs experience. Banking is basically a service industry in nigeria so u get little or no experience at it if you don't set your goals rit. Cos u do same thing for over 2 yrs or more. But banking for me is a very interesting profession that open up different opportunities.(they all got where they are now cos they got that experience remember!!) For me I have a reason to go into banking and I don't see any reason I shd work for somebody all d yrs of my life without a good retirement. I got opportunity to go into biz but choose banking. Let's be sincere, can anyone here who have worked with any bank leave without experience? It opens you up to reality. The stress of getting up very early and going late, the fact that u ve high integrity considering pple fortune u didn't temper with. The pressure of target and the satisfaction of accomplishment. The fact you interact with everybody in the society confidently without fear (rich/poor) and many more. I bet you its all worth it. (th cash also). Dear Op, one truth I can tell you is that if you are ever a banker you never be poor cos it opens you real up.*either way* Except if u not focused. "Growth is inevitable " from AM you are good as a banker.

I'd like to begin by telling you it's a case of different strokes for different folks. I quite agree with some of the posts here even though i'm tempted to say some appear a bit exaggerated, but most of them are right.

I have put in 8 years. So i can tell you i got into the industry when it was all red and rosy, and having stayed put till this time, and surviving all the shake ups and right sizing. I can say i've almost seen it all and thank God for guiding me. The truth is majority of us are trapped here due to lack of available alternatives, fear of the unknown, and will therefore leave only when the bank pushes us away.

It could really be very financially rewarding though. As a core staff in the Audit Group, I must confess the Pay is not bad at all, but whether it is commensurate with the workload, that is subjective. with most Middle management staff with an average of 12 years on the job from entry level pocketing 7 digit pay monthly,You will agree it's not bad. And did i tell you that some staff get as much as 12 times their monthly salary at Profit Sharing? If you are a performing marketer, you could get an 8-digit pay for PS alone. Yeah it is quite rewarding financially (as a core staff), but sadly, it ends there.

For those in Lagos and are operations staff, you barely have a life. Infact for women...don't just go there.

In my own opinion, I think marketers are the luckiest set of bankers. So many smart marketers build a network with their customers and before you know it...they are out on their own with a ready-made network to roll with.

In summary, for lack of options, you may not have a choice for starters...but you can be disciplined with your expenses and give yourself a target and leave when you can. It is hellish to be caught in the web of right sizing ooo. some dey almost contemplate suicide, especially if you've been living on loan. Avoid unnecessary loans and live modest.

By God's Grace, you will be successful.
