Official Nintendo Wii Softmod Thread by EvilBrain1(m): 12:03am On Nov 09, 2011
I recently helped a friend of mine softmod her Nintendo Wii to play pirated games. This was the first time I had done this (I'd never even played a Wii before) and I don't know anyone else who owns a softmodded Wii. Even the great Fisolucci doesn't mod Wiis or deal in Wii games. It seems Nintendo's console is not as popular among Nigerians as it is abroad.

Are there any hacked Wii owners on Nairaland? What are your experiences? Did you mod yours yourself of pay someone to do it? Which modding technique did you use? Have you had any problems since the hack? Where do you get your games from? I'm a huge fan of the Zelda games and I'm thinking of getting my own Wii to play Skyward Sword. But I'd like to hear from other owners before I spend money.

Wii pirates of Nairaland, Please post your experiences ITT.

Don't have a wii but seen homebrew versions with up to 1tb of games.

However, I'd picked up an original xbox for a fiver which would be softmodded to be used as a media centre running xbmc.
Plan to install larger hard drives as against stock 8gb by hotswapping to accommodate movies, games, emulators etc.
Never modified a console before, but would see how it goes.

I have a wii which I sofmodded myself.

I am a huge nintendo fan and I also have a gamecube with 8 CDs (Resident Evil Zero, Mario Kart Double Dash, F Zero GX etc). I even downloaded the playable demo of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Basically modding my Wii was fun and I am really enjoying the console.

i was considering starting this thread just yesterday

yep i have a soft modded modded wii 4.0u

got it last year

got plenty of stuff running on it - a usb loader for wii titles
emulators for classic nes, snes, atari and sega titles

the emulators for PS1 and n64 dont run so well

just got into wiiware - been downloading wads installaiung and moving to my sdcard

for hacks go to wiihacks.com

for pirated games go to wiiso.com
for covers etal go to gametdb.com

get wiibackup fusion for transferring games to your wbfs formatted drive

when looking for games, try to find those in wbfs or ciso format. this is because a Nintendo iso is 4.5gb - but a lot of that may be empty space.

right now theres a tool called modmii which apparently will do 90% of it for you

you will need an sd card(2gb) or pererably an sdhc card - try to get one thats confirmed compatible

external drive for storing games, you may have to make it into two partitoions, wbfs and fat32 - wbfs is a wii proprietary format

if you have kids, you will love the wii. there's plenty of kid friendly and educational stuff out there - which may really be why the wii is not that popular in naija - its a family oriented console

u shld see my 4 year old playing mario kart and larning with the pooyoos

i mostly download stuff for my kids. my serious gaming is on my pc.

Modding your wii is probably the best thing you can do to expand its functionality, I had 2 Wiis that I hacked and was able to install all sorts of channels on it. The most important of these is probably the Homebrew Channel, which is kind of like a gateway to all the wonderful homebrew apps that people have written for the wii including Mplayer, which enables DVD movie playback and playback of audio and video files from a flash drive, sd card, or usb drive, Snes 9x emulator which worked perfectly (used it to play Chrono Trigger, fantastic gem of a game), Wii64 emulator which like a previous poster said didnt work so well for some games, Neogamma which allows you to play Backups , USB loader which allows you to back up your games and play them, and alot more. The only downside to hacking your wii is that it takes a bit of maintenance if you want to play the latest games, many of the newer games come with updates by Nintendo designed to break or undo any homebrew hacks detected on the console, so you gotta be careful.

Out of the 3 consoles of this generation, the Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3 and Xbox 360, modding the wii is probably the most easiest and safest because its a softmod, not a hardmod. You dont have to take a screwdriver and open the console to install a modchip or anything like that, all you have to do is load the modded software onto an SD card, pop it into your Nintendo Wii, use one of the exploits that allows the software on the SD card to run and voila! The rest will be done. The whole process takes just about 5 mins.

I havent really been following the latest developments in Wii hacking, but I know of 3 exploits that crashes the Wii and can be used to allow software on the SD card to run, including the Bannerbomb method that doesnt require any game to use (this is how I modded mine), the Twilight hack which basically makes you load a save file in which the horse (default name is Epona) in Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess a very very long name, which crashes the Wii and allows the hack on the SD card to run (as of system menu 3.4 or so and higher Nintendo fixed this so this exploit wont work any more), and the Smash Stack hack which involves using the custom stage loader function in Super Smash Bros Brawl (a game I absolutely love  smiley ) to load the hack from the SD card.

Dont know why many of these console manufacturers limit what their consoles can do, when they have the potential to do so much more just by tweaking the software/operating systems on the console. Nintendo originally planned for the Wii to have DVD playback capability but scrapped it before the final release, citing 'cost' reasons. Dont understand how that is so when Wii games themselves are DVDs and the Wii has a DVD drive. Just like how XBMC greatly expanded the function of the original Xbox and how many people jailbreak their iPhones so that they can get out of the 'walled garden' that Apple seems to create their products with. Sony claims that the reason they took out backwards compatibility from the PS3 slim to run PS2 games was that there was a chip that was required for the PS2 games to run and that it was driving up the production cost of the PS3, but I'm pretty sure that chip or no chip, with all the processing power that the PS3 has, Sony could write an emulator that plays PS2 games just fine. Why they dont want to do so, beats me.

And I agree, its a shame that the Nintendo Wii doesnt really have that many fans in Nigeria. Its all about the PS2/3 and Pro Evolution Soccer with 90% of people here. Xbox 360 is kind of starting to get popular here, but there are many people here who I dont think have even heard of the Wii. Which is sad, because they will never know the joy of Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Smash Bros Brawl, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime, Mario Kart and so on. Oh well.
Re: Official Nintendo Wii Softmod Thread by Man51ut(m): 5:27am On Nov 11, 2011
the problem with the wii is that while the stuff that's very good, is very good, there's a lot of shovelware.

PS. apologies for my earlier comment. i have no problem if people want to mod their consoles to do other things, just feel that doing it to pirate kills what is in essence a baby industry.

I mean Harmonix were behind one of the most successful franchises in Rock Band, and still has problems breaking even.

Thanks for the info, very helpful. Was getting my games from isohunt and tpb before, but I'll try wiiso.com.

Nobody's trying to kill gaming. Most of us are big fans of the industry and support it by buying games whenever we can. Its just that it can get expensive. When we're forced to pay 2-3X what what Americans do for games despite earning less money, some piracy is inevitable

I mean Harmonix were behind one of the most successful franchises in Rock Band, and still has problems breaking even.

I think the reason Harmonix wasnt able to break even in past recent years wasnt because of piracy, but because the whole "rock music game" craze began to fade, and Harmonix's revenue began to decrease quickly, because Rock Band is their main source of sales, and also Guitar Hero. And when you think about it, Rock Band and Guitar Hero are games that are hard to pirate because while you can easily download the software off the internet, you can not download the physical guitar and drum that is required to play these games. Harmonix just released their results for the last annual period and they had a profit of over $100 million dollars, because of the excellent sales of Dance Central on Xbox 360 and the associated downloadable content for it. So Harmonix is still generating alot of income, piracy or no piracy.

fair points all.

And I'm being hypocritical as I download other media rather than paying for the DVDs or books etc.

I have over 130 games for a Nintendo Wii that has softmod, all you need is an external drive (thumb drive or HDD) to copy the games to and play from it instead of a disc.
