Tips For Djs by Djoshea(m): 2:25pm On Aug 06, 2014
Hi.i'm djoshea and i want to share some tips with fellow djs out here.
1.when you create your mixes, make sure all your songs are set to the same level of gain, mid, treble&bass.this ensures that your mix doesn't have various levels of volume and makes your mix better.
2.when deejaying at a party, don't keep the best songs for last.if possible start with the new hot jamz, this will make your party crowd love you.at least start with the top twenty trending jamz.
3.when mixing at a party, going a bit old school is not a bad idea at all.in fact, lots of party folks clamour for old jamz just to spice things up a bit.also dont stick to just one genre.
4.before going to a party that you have been given,a little rehearsal helps calm your nerves down if you are a newbie in the dj biz.its inspires confidence in you and makes you know which songs go with which songs
5.party folks are bound to come to you as a dj once in a while to make special song requests,do not turn them down rudely while also not quickly acquiesing to their request if the song they are asking for does not tally with the current song you are playing.
Keep locked on to this thread for more tips later. Hello everyone,as promised,Here are 5 more tips to help as a dj
6.when mixing songs, make sure you always check the bpm(beat per minute) of the songs you wanna mix, various songs have various bpm.if you are using a dj app like virtual dj,you will find the bpm on the right hand side of the song in the lower section of the virtual dj interface
7.before you can mix songs especially during a party, you have to ensure that you synchronise songs so that they are on the same bpm.when songs have the same bpm,it means your party mix will be on the same tempo through out.you can synchronise by either clicking the sync button on the software dj interface you are using or you will find the button on the turn table you are using.each deck on a dj software interface has its own sync button
8.even after you sync songs, make sure you still check the pitch bar(thats if you are using a dj software e.g virtual dj) and make sure its at the same level as the song you are crossfading from.there are times when the pitch bar doesn't respond to the sync command.this happens a lot if you use virtual dj 5.2.although you can prevent this by setting the pitch reset option to disabled in the config option
9.you can adjust the bpm of a song by right clicking on the song and choosing the option of manually editing the bpm.however don't just adjust bpm as you wish,an understanding of how bpm works is required.i'll explain this in subsequent posts
10.for those of you who already know a lot about bpm and are experienced djs, this last advice is for you.just because your party crowd is high on drinks or just cos you feel you want the party to be more vibrant, doesn't mean you have to set the bpm to neck breaking speeds of 140 and above. A decent bpm to use is 137 and even this is too fast but at least it doesn't mean your party people have to dance like their on fire and also because most nigerian afro pop, afro beat genre songs have bpms close to this range.on average most songs have a bpm of 131 or 132.thats all for now.watch out for more soon, where i'll talk about the use of cue in mixing.

I actually quite disagree with this point sir. Although, I don't increase my BPM to more than 135.00 but on more than two occasions, I was asked to increase the tempo so people could dance to the song. Had no choice but to increase to 139.00

However in my opinion, for making mixtapes the best BPM for afro pop and dancehall music is 133 to 135

For parties, its 139, 140. It must not go any faster

I am loving this. I use 8 too but looking for how to get traktor pro, the serato I downloaded needs a controller to work. You mean ur own song refixes?

I downloaded serato bt I haven't really started using it.
That traktor pro is usually a trial version. I tried to download it too but just left it on discovering most of d downloads on google are trial versions.
Besides, I once went on virtual DJ website and checked them out. They were like traktor is mostly a music production software. Not for pure DJing and it doesn't have as many features as virtual DJ

Lol. My song refixes are just like rearrangement of songs... Just rearranging the verses. Setting cues at different points to allow the crowd enjoy the music. They aren't as dope as all those other established DJ refixes tho. They have far more equipment than I do...

Okayyy bro.

It depends for slow songs like that. Songs that have BPMs of 83.00 - 112.00 in my experience shldnt be increased to more than 4.6 percent of their pitch.see the pitch below the BPM near the turntable in the image.

Its best for like to party not to be increased to more than 97.00 or at the very worst, 98.00

Was searching on how to make my dj skills better and I stumbled on this article. I'm a newbie in the dying area(i just do it for fun and my friends tell me I'm good at it). I've never performed at any gig before so I have 0 experience. I also use vdj 8.

if you're a newbie, use virtual DJing for now
it's self explanatory

for a pro or at the intermediate level, controllers ans virtual DJing isn't that much different

Continued using virtual dj since the last time I posted the message you commented on and I've gotten really good at it.

Wanna step up to the next level (using controllers) and I also wanna learn how to scratch (you know scratching in virtual dj isn't as nice as on a physical controller).

Planning on doing an hour long mixtape sef just that I won't have any of those scratches.

Your thoughts on this?

hehe. confirm. controller don cost small sha. be like around 80-130k tho.

besides why the hell do you need a controller to make a mixtape

I've made about 5 official mixtapes with about 25k combined downloads and I didn't have a controller. all was on virtual DJ and I have people that messaged me on whatsapp from nairaland appreciating the various mixtapes

My guy, so me sef I see price for controller and I fear fear oooooo.

Some set of people say you not having a controller doesn't make people take you seriously as a dj.

I also downloaded your Solo birthday mixtape and it was really nice to listen to.
