It's the right hand that should give offense actually. In these days of unbridled offense-taking I guess anything allowed. Before the advent of toilet paper, people used everything from corn cobs to green leaves to wipe their bum. Washing your bum with water was also quite common. Because the water was held with the right hand and left hand used to clean the bum proper, the left hand garnered an unsavory reputation. Giving or receiving anything with the "poo hand" became undesirable.

We don't wash our bums with our left hand anymore. We use toilet paper to wipe our bum. With our right hand.

So you should actually be offended if some offers you something with their right hand.

My two kids are both lefties and I make sure that no body,I mean no one speaks them down cos of that. I tell them stories of great men who are lefties eg Barack Obama. So if you are not comfortable with that,then too bad!

Whether we like it or not, it's our culture to use right hand to give and receive. There's no myth or superstition attached to it. If you are a southpaw however, you are free to use your left hand to do things for yourself - eat, write etc. But when giving or receiving, it won't hurt you to use your right hand. I have a cousin who doesn't believe in the culture of using the right hand. One day, while trying to exchange handshakes, I offered him my left hand. He was bemused and asked why it had to be with left hand, and I said to him: does it have to be with right hand? He got the drift!

there's something about the right hand sha, even in the Bible, it is stated that when Jesus ascended into heaven, he seated at the RIGHT HAND of his Father. But then God created both hands equally, when you love your right hand than your left hand or vice-versa, it is your own business.

I once asked an elder and her response was that in this side of the world after defecating we use our left hand to wash our ass, it is unclean to use that same hand to give, take or greet someone. And besides in the west you dont see people shaking hands with their left hand.

That made sense to me, no religious or cultural reasons, just courtesy.

Even in d West, there used 2 b superstition lyk dis d slight discrimination 4 left handed persons eg d word "sinister" originated from d Italian word dt literally meant left & even d French word 4 left "gauche" Is used 2 qualify an action as wrong/bad in English language. However it is sad 2 note dt while D West have evolved beyond dis dull thought, most Africans still blindly follow it as if dey lack sense. I have even heard cases of parents beating up their naturally left handed children 4 using their left hand 2 collect/give dem things.
