Your fishes may still have the symptoms but they are well , you know the wounds may not go immediately , it goes with time ,important you have killed the bacteria or fungus causing the problem, once they are no more dying and eating well no cause for alarm CONGRATULATION AND HAPPY SELLING

Good evening the Op,Gurus and guests of the house.All protocol observed. I want to say a big thank you for the good job u have been doing on this thread and on nairaland. Reading through the years of experience and various posts,It's as if we've already met and I must confess I've learnt a lot.

I plan on going into commercial fish farming by next year february during my IT as land and water has been acquired remaining pond construction.I bought some fingerlings (25) for practice as advised on the thread to start small on Nov 17th. I stocked them into a 20l plastic bucket(will sort into other containers as they grow). I lost 4 cos they jumped out during the night and 1 to cannibalism .
I feed them 0.8mm feed as recommended by the seller.I bought at 30# per fingerling and 1kg of the feed cost 1100#. They feed twice a day and eat aggressively as they should . Turned silver grey 4 days after stocking but i guess its because the container is white in colour but they are still as active as ever.I change their water every 2-3 days to avoid bad smell and feed to satiation. So far there growth is visible and positive as attested by most of my lodge mates. Will post pictures tomorrow after changing water.

I want to start my farm with at most 1000 fishes which would cost me 30,000# on fingerlings which I've come to trust as good seeds or go for an untested source who promised to sell at 15# when he spawns next that would cost 15,000#.Another alternative going through my head right now is to get a pair of brood stock,set up a vat and attempt my first spawning exercise and allow natural selection to give me my BEST 1000 IF they make it.

1]Pls I need advice on the best course of action on sourcing fingerlings.
2]Cost estimate for two 12x12x4 concrete ponds including sizes of drainage and inlet pipes diameter.
3]Price of the most affordable aerator,water pump,digital thermometer and pH meter.
4]Can tilapia fries/fingerlings effectively serve as substitute for catfish feed.If yes, how best should it be served to catfish.

For your first question you can order fingerlings from robonski , hatching is not about putting vat and taking 2 brood together to spawn . There are lot of technicality involve . Most succesful hatchery will tell u they dont sleep at night , you have to nurse them 24/7 round the clock just like a mother nurse a baby ,any slight change in any of the factors can make you loose all you fries in just a twinkle for an eye. Please am not scaring anybody hatching can be done by everyone but my advice to people , is to try seek proper training before setting up an hatchery . Money is hard to come by ,lets not throw it away. for question 2, go to the earlier pages of the tread, you will see were the cost is been analysed , but read my write up very carefully, i explained how to prepare a concrete pond, and ensure a 9 inches block is used, and when plastering, make sure u buy waterproof cement and mix equally with normal cement, also ensure the sand used during plastering is well sieved. And when drying ensure u put nylon all over it for slow drying . When u follow this steps to the letter your pond can last 99 years without lick or sip . To avoid the problems of plastering or repairs at end of every cycle . For 3rd questions ,i advice u buy rechargeable aerator its about 17k but this for the fish till juvenile , but if u are doing grow out then u need the low capacity blower it cost about 40k, water pump comes in different capacity.The type that can carry your pond should not cost more than 10k, the thermometer u need is not digital , the best is the aquarium thermometer cost 4k , for ph dont buy the meter type, buy the liquid type. It cost 5k. The liquid gives better accuracy than the meter type . question 4 , yes u can feed with tilapia fries , its also away of cutting cost .You have to construct another pond were u will keep the brood stock tilapia. Using the pond size u mentioned, u can create 3 to 4 hapa net in this concrete pond size, in each hapa net , place 2 male to 10 female in each hapa . Since tilapia are mouth brooders every week , when u check them for fries or eggs, u have to open there mouth to check for eggs or fries. Note u can feed ur fingerlings with tilapia egg which are very rich in crude protein or live newly hatch tilapia lava,are also very rich in protein.I will elaborate on this issue when i treat the topic feed, ifyou are not satisfied sir with the answers , you can ask any direct questions, and i will be glad to help. @soft777 Oga mi, I don't think sir Robonski would be able to send just 1000 fingerlings to port harcourt as I see it isn't too convenient for him. On the pond I thought non-hollow 6 inches blocks would be better as the 9 inches blocks are mostly hollow and filling with concrete would be money waste. I would adopt the double plastering technique u adviced.
Can u give me a name or brand I could use as reference when buying the waterproof cement.
can the tillapia fries find their way out of the happa net for easier collection without disturbing the brood tilapia and what is the mesh size of the happa net to be used?

the mason (who came highly recommended by expert catfish farmers in owerri) claimed there was no need to put pillars in the corners of the pond. Also, it appears he did not lay the foundation of the ponds on level floor and some part of the concrete blinding was weak.

Soon after completion of the plastering and plumbing, I saw crack lines in a lot of places running right down to foundation level.
So I had to engage him to break all the places with crack lines right down to the foundation level, place steel In it and cast concrete columns. Also, I chose some strategic points and had him break them down and cast concrete columns in them.
Unfortunately that was all I cud do and I hope it works.
I wud have liked to chain all the pillars together at 3blocks level from foundation but that will practically be equal to building new ponds. I don't have dat kinda cash on ground. The ponds are 6 nos of 7ft x 14ft and 4ft deep each.

GOLDLOVER:
If the capacity of ur biofilter is 45000 L, then i think it will be just fine since the combined volume of both ponds is far less than 45000 L.
( 1 cubic foot holds 28.32 L ).
(Cubic vol = L * B * H )
