The Largest Religion In Nigeria? Islam Or Christianity? Detailed Analysis by fedex01: 6:47am On Jan 01, 2016
There's is a lot of confusion regarding the state of religion in Nigeria, Africa's largest nation. I was researching on the topic and was getting different results. Some sources put Christianity as the majority religion (56%-58%) while other sources put Islam ahead with 60% of the population. Majority of the sources do tend to agree that the population of Nigeria is almost equally divided between Christianity and Islam (at 49% to 48% etc).

Amongst all of this, I started doing my own research regarding the future of Nigeria's religious landscape. My thorough research points towards one conclusion. It is be Islam that seems to be the future majority religion of Nigeria.

This year, United States premier demographic organization, PEW research center, released a report regarding the future of religion in the world. They did a thorough study of demographic trends across the world and published their results after 6 years. They looked at demographic surveys, age-structure of different religious groups, fertility rates of individual religious groups, and so on. This was the most detailed demographic report on religion till date.

The results of the report suggests that, when it comes to Nigeria, Islam will become the majority religion in next 20 to 30 years.

By 2050, there would be 230 million Muslims in Nigeria and 154 million Muslims. You can see the results for Nigeria here

http://www.pewforum.org/2015/04/02/religious-projection-table/2050/number/Sub-Saharan_Africa

Read full report here

http://www.pewforum.org/2015/04/02/religious-projections-2010-2050/

This projection is further substantiated by the Nigerian Demographics and Health Survey of 2013 (most latest one) where 51.5 of population is revealed to be Muslims by the survey (page 60)

https://dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/FR293/FR293.pdf

It should be noted that there some organizations, such as Afrobarometer, who released their own report in 2013, give the numbers more favorable towards Christians (with 58% Christians and 42% Muslims). Although it should be noted that the sample size for Afrobarometer was 2400 people while Demographic and Health Survey did a thoroughly comprehensive nation-wide survey with sample size going into tens of thousands.

Lastly, every single study (no matter what the results) agree on one thing: The fertility rates in Northern Nigeria are higher than Southern parts. Which means that Muslims have more kids than Christians in Nigeria. Keeping this one fact in mind, we can see the reports of a Muslim-majority Nigeria are, in fact, credible and have the backing of data.

For example, a detailed report on fertility done by the researchers of prestigious Princeton University of the U.S reveals that the different between Muslim and Christian fertility has increased over the years---with Muslim women of Nigeria having 2 more kids than their Christian counterparts on average.

http://paa2015.princeton.edu/uploads/151197

Conclusion: After analysis of available data from various organizations and credible sources, it is clear that Islam is going to be majority religion in Nigeria--if it already isn't.

Your analysis is very flawed because it failed to take into account the conversion rate between both religions and as it is now the rate of conversion from islam to christianity is growing at a phenomenal rate. Even the core north that was once dominated by muslims now have very sizeable ethnic christian populations and even in some communities the christians far out numbering muslims. Infact northern/middle belt states like Kaduna, Plateau, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue that were traditionally muslim are now christian majority states.

Another point of note is that in successive censuses, muslims have always vehemently resisted govt including religion in demographic data collected. Could it be that they know it will finally expose the truth that christians out number muslims in Nigeria and that islam is on a fast decline?

The Pew Forum in a 2010 report compared reports from several sources.[3] The 1963 Nigerian census found that 36% of the population was Christian, 48% Muslim, and 16% other; the 2008 MEASURE Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) found 53% Christian, 45% Muslim, and 2% other; the 2008 Afrobarometer poll found 56% Christian, 43% Muslim, and 1% other

As you can see from the above quote from wikipedia, islam is on the decline in Nigeria cheesy

There is no credible data on conversions. If there were indeed massive conversions going on, why would it not show on the Demographic and Health Surveys conducted nation-wide?

As I stated, DHS surveys are the most comprehensive surveys conducted nation-wide to get information regarding various measures (religion being one of them). DHS survey of 2013 clearly shows Muslims to be ~52% of the population in Nigeria from a sample size of tens of thousands nationwide.

Pew report that I posted in the OP does take conversions into account. It clearly states that conversions go both ways and the net impact of conversions is almost neutral.

You are quoting Demographic and Health Survey from almost a decade ago.

The most latest Demographic and Health Survey (conducted two years ago) reveals Nigeria's population to be ~52% Muslim.

Moreover, the latest DHS survey was implemented by National Population Commission of Nigeria itself---which is the most credible authority when it comes to demographic. Same authority conducts the census in Nigeria.
