Can Nairaland Programming Section Be More Like Stack Overflow by FincoApps(m): 11:39am On Jan 26, 2016
There are somethings I noticed about the programming section here in Nairaland.

First, when there is a general discussion of maybe a technology, notice how other programmers act like professors.... mentioning different terms and concepts of programming. However when someone really needs help and asks a question, people become very reluctant to answer.

I noticed in Stack Overflow, people willingly lecture others for free, post helpful links, even write helpful codes.

Some programmers told me it's because what they suggest might not help the person... true but at least it would help other people that comes across a similar issue.

Lastly, people that ask questions, be more detailed... sometimes you see questions like
My Eclipse is not working...help
My code is not working
I cannot add users on my blog

L cheesy L, is it magic... try to provide code samples of what you've done, screenshots or the exact quote of the error.

Let's be more helpful

Here you will see topics like:

- my php code is not working (no code sample or screenshot or whatever)
- help, my server is not uploading files (no error message or anything)

and even when they do dump codes, they will not dump the area that is not working but all the file.

here, you can see a script like:

$new=new CLASS;
....
...
...

not working. Because you dont have the code of the class, you cannot even run the sample code. And usually the nairaland programmers would not have known where area of the problem surprisingly.
Most times, i just use my eyes to debug and waka pass.

Guys I don't think it's the folkes asking the silly questions; bur the job of admins to follow up those questions asked. Either delete such questions or ask the person to add more detail. This will young programmers actually learn more.

And even the contents produced here will be really helpful to other visitors.

Maybe nairaland should also provide a feature for marking answers either correct or wrong.

Like Stackoverflow. Lol.

People with serious questions ask them on stackoverflow, they don't ask them on NL.

NL doesn't have the features to compete with stackoverflow on the questions front.

I agree with you but nairaland is not in anyway like stackoverflow....but this section can be improved if the mods are more active in scrapping useless topics and forcing users to ask detailed questions.... Try asking a silly question on SO it will immediately get download and be closed....asap

The aim of this post is not to compare NL to SO at all, but to complain about the programmers that ignore questions and about the newbies that ask vague questions

Many forming in here. I was once promised a code to help accomplish a task. Turns out the guy was playing Gui/Graphics tricks, just arranging buttons and Gui components to look like a working program. The task then was to join pairs of jpeg files (signature and passport) into a single jpeg file carrying both pic content side by side. The guy is prominent here. Always parading about deep computer science terms

That section needs some inspiring content. We need to start seeing HTML/CSS tricks more.

Hold up son! Hope you know Nairaland has no where near the membership numbers of stackover flow? You're comparing a toddler to an adult. Ask more Nigerian specific questions and people would be more likely to respond.

Nairalănd programming section is just for theory... actually I'm building a community.. it'll be cool for real programming discussions.. grin

If you understood the post well, you would get my point.

My point is, even if Nairaland had 2 X the membership of StackOverflow.... it would be more like 70% dull heads so it would only get worst. I would have said 100% dull heads, but I've met some good programmers here dat don't exhibit d irritating traits

It seemed I once promised such but didnt have the time to complete it as planned at that period cos most times personal and contracted projects always have a way to cos distractions but if you were actually reffering to me then I would say I am glad I spent my time doing something else instead of programming for you.

Some of us have slight health issues that you dont even care about, what is wrong in sending a mail, some of us have our phone numbers written in our NL signature, just a minute call or text message would do to say: ."Guy hello how are you today, hope you didnt forget to help me with that task.. "

We never even spoke before and you just expect an anonymous person to do your task for you, just like that without even showing cares..

I have a very good friend in here, he calls, sends mail, text for one assistance or the other and most times I am always in the middle of one project or the other and over time he got to understand me and cares for what I do and my time, now he asks questions and I reply to him on whatsaap and I sent written codes to him once on whatsapp..

Infact the first time I got a programming job from a company out of Nigeria, I called him to know, he knew when I was even on my way to the embassy and all of that.. this is a friend from NL I never saw.

When I arrived at the said country, I got a refferal to do another job while I was in the middle of one, he was the person I called back in Nigeria to know if he could do the task..

If you want a challenge between you and I in order to prove to you that I dont just design, that I also code verrrrrrrry well, kindly mention me.

Mscheeeeeew! It is on the same programming section, I developed a full Android App and to another person a full bureau de change software and till now I got no kobo after deployment, not even one naira and I used all my resources and time for those projects, hoping they would fulfill their end of the deal..

I would not come on NL to argue with anyone as it is the norm here, back to the topic... @OP have you also noticed the numerous java, python, etc whatsapp groups and the reasons for their evolvement?

There was nothing to complete in my own case. I never asked for beautiful ui and never forced anyone to do my task for me. I did it myself with the aid of ms-dos command in less than 6 days (my first encounter with ms-dos batch scripting) but wanted the whole thing i was promised to metamorph into something bigger and far more inspiring. I remember coming back to the thread to do multiple mentions. In the end, I am a better programmer without getting the expo . . .

Overflow is a technical, programming term, which literally refers the forum as a home of sound help to all your computer problems so far you've try your best, and have no clue, unlike here, I try o I no try o, just gimme the codes. I blame the secondary schools and university because of the examination we now have the only which is to look for answers without learning how we get there. As the common adage, there're many ways that leads to market, just tell me the way and I follow, we are so afraid of missing the road and taking the stress to find the track back, this can be related to our Nigerian Programming mindset.

I don't know if this really tallies with the OP's question, but the fact am typing this is to really back up the claims of someone. It's so hard to find someone to come down so low to render help, advice and all that even as we all know that there are lots of frustrating beginners' questions (lolls).

He's a good coder and great UI designer, believe it not, there's no hyping, even if there're strings attached, I just have to call a spade a spade, sometimes when I see him in this kind of scenario back then with some people, I always say "make this man leave this people jare, it's hard to convince people till they they see".

Well yeah there're times I feel so frustrated as there're are no return calls, the worst part are days he's mobile lines are off for a long period of time. But I tell you it worth it, because I understand how busy he has always been, (a building full of 0s and 1s, whatcha expect?). At the time we initiate communication back I be wan say there're no reasons for apologies jare, so far am able to communicate back with you, but yet he still go ahead to apologize for not picking calls due one reason or the other. We never see each other even though there have been many attempts.

And back to the OP ehn, just use the mediums you have, Mr. Seun has tried his best to bring this forum to us, as you know Nigeria is still a baby in terms of technology at large, so it would be so hard for peeps to know how to solve their own problems unless they receive motivations, which depends on how they receive it. (I have a friend, he was motivated because he asked a question in one of these yankee hacking website, and a guy on the forum bashed him with some abusive words, my pal now always tryna solve his problem him self unless he has no clue).

Pardon my English.

Normally this is simple but in my case, the stupid library I was using was the cause.... I found that out later after a full day of debugging.

The annoying thing is that very few people bothered to at least give suggestions.... but when it comes to argument, you'll see idiots claiming Ph.D, Ph.E and Ph.Z in programming cheesy
