Nigerian Nurses And Midwives With The Dream Of Working Abroad Let's Meet Here. by barbiee: 1:49am On Jan 14, 2016
This thread is dedicated to all Nigerian trained nurses and midwives in search of greener pastures either in Uk, USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA etc.

GREAT NURSES!! Together we stand, divided we fall.
I would like to use this medium to share my journey and experience as a Nigerian nurse aiming to be registered as a nurse in USA. Please feel free to comment and bring up suggestions as i share my step to step guide to nursing registration abroad. No man is an island of knowledge.

MY JOURNEY TO NURSING REGISTRATION IN TEXAS, USA : A GUIDE FOR NIGERIAN NURSES.

As we all know or must have heard, nurses are paid very well in USA, the opportunities, possibilities and career growth is endless and if you are ambitious like me, you would have thought of relocating too. if you have, then i have good news for you, it's not as hard and complicated as it seems if you follow the right steps.

You don't need any agent to assist you with your nursing registration, you can do it yourself. I repeat, YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF.

Now enough with this chatter and let's start already.

To register as a nurse in USA you have to first of all decide on the state you want to work in, I'm not going to give the pros and cons of each state because this post is about my personal journey so I'm going to be limited to what I did and didn't do.

I decided to choose the state of Texas because in my opinion the Texas Board of nursing is not as strict to foreign nurses when compared to some other states. For example, they don't require English exams, they are customer friendly, they take their time to respond and answer all your questions. I know this because i took a long time to research and arrive at this conclusion. Moreover working as a nurse in Texas also has its benefits like no income taxes, it's a compact state and most of its population are black. I'm not racist but i figured being in a new country with no friends and family close by it would be comforting to see more blacks around you. shocked

After choosing a state, the next step is to register with CGFNS

This can be done at www.cgfns.org
Take note that the application fee is $350

CGFNS registration /application procedure

Log in to https://www.cgfns.org/cerpassweb/register.jsp to create a new application. Your application is only valid for 1 year so i would advise that your application fee of $350 and your credentials are readily available. Your documents has to be sent by the appropriate authorities issuing them and must not come from you the applicant.

When you log into the cgfns page, go to the drop down menu and scroll to the almost the last part where you will find..

Cgfns connect (for applicants)
Cgfns connect (for state boards of Nursing)
Click on the cgfns connect for applicants. It will take you to another login page where you can register as a new user.

*Are you a nurse?: Yes
*What is the country of your entry level nursing education?: Nigeria
*Do you have or have you ever held a registration or license issued by the respective authorities from the country where entry level nursing education was completed? : Yes

*Select a service

Choose credentials evaluation service (CES). For Texas and other states except New York.
Or Credentials verification service(CVS) for New York state only. (the pathophysiology of New york state registration is totally different from other states. Please do not apply my experience if you are registering with new york)

Click on NEXT to take you to the next page.

*CES RECIPIENTS

*What type of CES report would you like? Choose professional report if your aim is to register with a state Board of Nursing, get licensed and start working. Choose Academic report if your aim is to send the report to a university where you want to further your studies or upgrade to a Bsn. I chose the former.

Wait for the page to refresh itself so that the other questions following your chosen report will come up.
If you picked professional report then read on, if not then this is where our journey ends for those choosing the academic route.

*CES report type: Professional Report

*What type of license are you applying for?: Registered Nurse. (you cannot use two stones to kill a bird here like for Canadian registration where you can choose both LPN and RN. It's either you pick lpn or RN. I had to deliberate for a long time before finally going for RN because I was thinking "what if my credentials are not equivalent to RN, wouldn't it be better to pick lpn so that my money won't be wasted?) But after many calls to cgfns and emails to Texas Bon, I was advised to go for RN. smiley wink[s]just in case you were thinking the same thing [/s]shocked wink

*Have you already passed the NCLEX exam?: No
*for Recipient #1Are you applying for Licensure in the US?: Yes
*State Board of Nursing: TEXAS BOARD OF NURSE EXAMINERS. ( you can choose more than one state but additional charges apply. I choose just Texas.)
*My recipient is on the list above: Yes

Click on the SUBMIT button
It will lead you to the cgfns connect service purchase wizard. Click on next to begin the 12 steps of your application.

This is a modified post.. To avoid it being too lengthy i am going to continue with the steps from page 7 of this thread.

Keep in mind this is made as a reference guide, not as a primary source! For the most specific information to your case, please use the contact information to ask each Board of Nursing yourself. Either call or email to ask your questions!

Overall, becoming a nurse in America is made up of three steps:

Step 1: Applying with the State Board of Nursing where you will be practicing.

Step 2: Registering with Pearson Vue to schedule your NCLEX location and date. Registration costs $200, plus additional fees if you are taking the NCLEX outside of the U.S.

Step 3: Getting into the Country. This involves immigration, visas, and getting approval to stay and work in the country.

STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR STATE, MEET REQUIREMENTS, AND APPLY TO THE STATE BOARD OF NURSING

What is the State Board of Nursing?
Each state has a committee called a Board of Nursing (for example, there are 50 Boards of Nursing in the U.S, one for each of 50 states). These are the people who decide if you are able to take the NCLEX and get licensed in their state.

Before you can even consider scheduling or planning where you want to take the NCLEX, you have to make your application to a State Board of Nursing.

How do I Know What Requirements I need to Meet?

Each state has different requirements. They will charge a fee ranging from $200-400 depending on each state. If you don’t know what state you want to be a nurse in, now is the time to choose!

In the United States, nurses don’t get licensed for the whole country. The United States has 50 states, and each nurse is usually licensed in one state at a time. That’s why the first step is to choose what state you want to apply for!

However, no matter what state you apply for, everyone takes the same NCLEX to be a nurse in the United States.

Each state’s Board of Nursing has a website where you can find out the requirements.

When can I take my NCLEX?

There are no set test dates for the NCLEX that you have to plan while doing the application. You can apply and register anytime. Once you do, you can then schedule your NCLEX for a date that is comfortable for you! The only requirement is that there might be a 90-day time limit (you have to schedule your NCLEX within 90 days of your application’s approval).

What is CGFNS?

First, we’ll explain to you what credential evaluation means. Credential evaluation means that a company has to look at your nursing school transcripts and education history from your home country to make sure you’re qualified to even take the NCLEX. The Boards of Nursing don’t do this because it would take too much time – so they let companies like CGFNS do the job. CGFNS then sends reports to the Board of Nursing if they feel your education meets requirements.

CGFNS is the most popular and well-known company that does this. You should know that different states require different “levels” of CGFNS evaluation:

Credentials Evaluation Service Professional Report

This report is less involved and cheaper than the Certificate Program or VisaScreen.

English Requirement
Secondary School Documents
Licensure Documents from your Home Country
Nursing Education Documents from your Home Country
$350

CGFNS Certification Program

This evaluation is the same, but requires you to take the CGFNS Qualifying Exam.

Everything in a Credentials Evaluation Service Professional Report
CGFNS Qualifying Exam
$445 Fee

VisaScreen®: Visa Credentials Assessment

The VisaScreen has the same requirements as the Certification Program, but is meant to qualify you for getting a Work Visa, after you’ve already passed the NCLEX exam.

$540 Fee

CGFNS is not the only credentialing service! There are others that may be cheaper and still accepted by State Boards. You should first check to see if your State Board accepts these alternative companies (and let us know in the comments below!).
If you decide to use CGFNS, different states require different CGFNS evaluations. You can see a chart here of which state requires which certification. At the time of this writing, CGFNS reports cost $350.00.

Alternatives to CGFNS:
International Education Research Foundation (IERF) ($350 per report, see states that accept IERF)
Educational Records Evaluation Services (ERES) ($375 basic fee)
Josef Silny & Associates, Inc. ($300 per report)

Other Requirements

Fingerprints: Some states require students to get fingerprints, which can be a complication if you’re currently in another country.

Social Security Number: Some states require students to have a social security number in order to apply or take the NCLEX in the first place. Other states allow you to use your visa or passport in lieu of that. Some other states have special forms for you to fill out if you don’t have a social security number. You can also learn more about how to obtain a social security number from the social security website.

English Proficiency Test: Many states require you to take either the TOEFL or IELTS test to make sure your English is fluent enough. This is usually a part of your requirements for your CGFNS report. Again, follow instructions that are listed for each state and feel free to contact them for specific details.

you need the ielts academic when applying as an Rn. Its lvn/lpn that requires the general test.

In the US, nurse refers to LVP/LPN while RN is Registered Nurse.

In Nigeria and perhaps elsewhere, RN is nurse and this distinction is not made.

Here is the salary structure for RN:
