who are they even trying to fool? they're just looking for a new means to steal the remaining money in Nigeria if not, how on earth would they ever think that french or any language is the problem we have in the Educational sector is french? rubbish!

you are the one who needs to do a little research. Official language of Canada is majorly English .about 22 per or so speak French . Do your research then come back and apologise to the world .

LOL. Guys like you don't fail to amaze.

Check ttmcoys' earlier 'post', and 'reply', and convince yourself of how much sense you'r making.
Really? French more important than mandarin? [s]how many top countries speck French aside France?[/s] Spanish is spoken by Latin american countries as well as a major language in the US.

The number of speakers is a strong indication of the importance of the language.

So if Canada's official language is English and French, would indicating just 'English' be a correct answer in a test question?

My dear, you can avail yourself the opportunity of reading my earlier posts and comments, I rarely say anything theoretically, I've lived most of them.

P.S. Contrary to your 'previous knowledge', French is the official language of over 45 lands, or 32 countries. I hope you've learnt something new today -- we learn everyday son.

Add the below to your wealth of knowledge:

French is second only to English for the number of countries where it has official status – 32 as opposed to 45. And, with 56 members, f La Francophonie is is now larger than the Commonwealth, which has 53.

French is also the only language, with English, that is taught in every country of the world, with 100 million students and 2 million teachers – 20 % of whom are outside of francophone countries.

Between 6 and 11 million Americans speak French, as does half the population of Algeria, and 15 percent of Israelis.

French is still a working language of the UN, the EU, and dozens of international organizations including the International Red Cross committee, International Labor Organization, Amnesty International, and Doctors without Borders. Francophone countries form an important bloc in the UN, the EU, the African Union, and the Arab League.

Two G-8 countries (France and Canada) and six European countries (France, Belgium, Switzerland, Romania, Luxembourg, Monaco) are French-speaking countries.

France is the most visited country in the world with 75 million tourists every year.

wow change indeed, the next in line would be Arabic compulsory for all. don't I just love this president, I would have thought security in the north would have been more compulsory than making French mandatory, "these leaders are jokers".

That's a great idea from the FG, I earn about 25,000 monthly as translator from Mandarin to English in markets/business transactions and also as a translator from French to English. Well, as for those of you saying you'd prefer Spanish, well, Spanish is totally almost useless in Nigeria except you wanna live in Western USA or latin america (which most nigerians don't do). So for Nigerians, I think French and Chinese are the best options.

French is well down the list and only spoken in backwater countries! (Like France!)
If a Nigerian politician is saying this it is only because of the "gifts" that he has been given!

That is in population , in spread it is second only to English.

Re: FG Declares French Compulsory For All Students by VirginFinder: 8:44am On Feb 01, 2016
Nonsense!
All our neighbours have learnt and are still learning English.
That's good enough.
Even in France, English is widely spoken and understood by a significant population especially the learned.

Oh dear , very daft , are we? It's not even in the first ten list of most spoken languages in the world. The only reason we are learning is because we live a region surrounded by francophones , I am better of learning mandarin or Hindi.

After you learn Mandarin finish just move go China or its neighbouring countries to use the language

Even if you have not been privileged to travel wide, a little research could come handy.

French is the official language in over 45 countries/lands.

I guess if you were asked, what is the official language of Canada; you'd say English.

Canada is bilingual and has two official languages - English and French.

I don't think it is a good idea. Why should French be made compulsory when Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa Languages are now optional in our schools including history. Who are those formulating this retrogressive policies?

Where did you get that from?

The most common language by number of people are Mandarin, Spanish, English, Arabic and Hindi. French comes in a distant 18th.

While I see the benefit in being multi lingual, I don't understand why it has to be French. Why not make it mandatory for our students to study a second international language and give them the choice. We are not a former French colony who have lots of dealings with France, and French is not our official language so why does it have to be french?

The reasons were given in the article, yet you don't understand?

SMH!
Re: FG Declares French Compulsory For All Students by ALLPISHON: 12:46pm On Feb 01, 2016
French as second lingual-franca? Very myopic. The country should rather go for Chinese. Chinese is more of grass-root than French. Economically, there is almost nothing the world power can come up with today that the Chinese will not spring a surprise. In fact, they have come a long way to take over our economy in the areas where the world power had kept secretly for us over decades: Electricity, Construction, telecom, rail transport, Alternate to power supply. I am sure they will have their own science around manufacturing of weapons. FGN, Wake-up think of future and not immediate nor personal gain.

I support this move. I think Nigerian should be bilingual in the face of French neigbours. It will help in economic integration of the region. Added to French, Chinese and Arabic should also be taught in Public schools. Thses are the languages of the future.
Why can't we be like China? Build your economy and let people learn your language. French has no economic importance. why learn the lang?" The English that is our lingua franca, how many Nigerians(students) do we have that can actually speak the language correctly?
