I think the black hibiscus has to be bought because it's a hybrid or its modified.

I thought as much
I will keep my eye out for it
Its just so beautiful

I have a modified rose. I got it from a garden show
They modified it so that it doesnt have thorns, has a deeper colour and they say its not as prone to black spot & rust which ive noticed is true (Rust and black spot can be a nightmare to get rid of)
Its really bizarre cos about 10% of the flowers are white and 90% are purple
I'm not sure why that happens
maybe an expert can explain this phenomenon
it only started doing this after the 2nd year
Below is an example of the rose

thanks, will check out gardens around Lagos to see if I can get some.

I took them with me from the UK, but its likely that some gardens will have some

With Jesus joy in my heart, i'm very happy to announce the orange coloured plant I was referring to earlier today. This thread woke that urge in me again and i went 'agoogling' LOL and this time, I was rewarded with the right result. Some of us on this thread may recognise the plant abi na only my mama dey grow am those days? This is the blog that led me to the plant; http://chingchailah..com/2015_08_01_archive.html

It is called Chrysothemis Pulchella. Wiki says ''Chrysothemis pulchella (also known as sunset bells, black flamingo, copper leaf' or simply chryothemis is a tender tropical perennial plant that belongs to the Gesneriaceae family. It can be used as a shade area house plant or interior ornamental plant or in a greenhouse''

If I tell you how excited I am about finding this plant, you wont believe it. I'll be sending the pic to my mum tomorrow morning.

This is gorgeous
its not often that one finds such bright orange flowers
Ive never seen it before anywhere
I will see if I can find the seeds

modified
Just read that it takes 3 years for seed to bloom sad
Looks like a garden centre trek grin

Probably the original plants' DNA is coming through.

Could you write about common issues with growing, such as diseases or pests?

West indies female. The best hedge trimming flower. You can use it to form any shape.

There's this professional gardener around Anthony, I believe he uses this so create some geometric shapes. Just on the express, close to a pedestrian bridge, that's his place.

Perhaps abroad. I notice some folks (online) from the west saying it lies dormant for most part of the year until spring (e try sef)

I don't think we need wait that long in Naija. I recall seeing this plant bloom all the time as a kid. I haven't seen it since then though and for some weird reason, I never quite forgot the plant. The flowers don't last for too long though.

Please does anyone know the name of the plant popularly used to bathe babies that have skin coloration? It's a dark coloured leaf and looks very much like dried hibiscus...

That's not much description to find o and I know a lot of people use different plants on children's skin (they once used some tree with small green and orange leaves to bathe me because I'd been bitten by black ants and it was swelling). Sorry I don't know.

Purple Heart

This is called Tradescantia pallida "Purpurea," formerly Setcreasea pallida.

Yeah, neither of those names are nice, so let's call it "Tosin" grin

Tosin is a succulent plant, nice and compact. It has purple leaves and tiny pink flowers. It likes sunshine because the more sun it gets, the deeper purple are its leaves. Occasionally pruning it from time to time will make it grow nice and bushy.

Coleus

If you live in Festac, on 2nd avenue before the Police station, there's a very well-tended professional garden run by a lady called Mrs Ogbonna. She has this plant there (and several. others, speak to her because she's pleasant and smart. She also does fresh flower bouquets and wresthes and altar pieces as well as sells plants.

modified: I saw a beautiful dark pink/wine coloured Coleus in Ikoyi, just on Ruxton road yesterday. A lady is charge of it or go to David on Glover road, Ikoyi.

Coleus are really pretty and their colours are nicer in the shade. So it's a shade-loving plant which likes a well-moist soil. Easy to grow from a cutting (just put it in water until roots form). They come in all sorts of colours too. Their leaves have this velvet texture. The darker the leaf colours, the more sun it can tolerate apparently.

Crown of Thorns/Christ plant

I think this is what we called "chookie-chookie" as children grin

Native of Madagascar, the popularity of this succulent is legen-(wait for it! ) Dary! It is used as a hedge plant everywhere you look. Oh take a moment to think of the poor Agama lizards who were toasting and chasing each other and accidentally ran into this plant grin When you check online, you'll see its flowers bloom in several colours but I have only ever seen it bloom in red flowers in Nigeria. I know it needs sunshine to bloom.

I sadly don't know how to grow it, but any average pro gardener will sell you the plant cheaply. Or better yet, ask them to come help you plant it, as its thorns are not something to joke with.

Regular palm we know is Palm Kernel tree and I believe this is another specie of non-oil bearing tree (like across tropical areas with Palm trees).

Other picture, I do not know at all. And I've seen it before. I'll find out.

Asparagus Fern

Very pretty indoor plant (it looks like suspended grass to me, very floaty and airy feel) and it is idiot-proof to grow, alright! cheesy It purifies the air. It does well in containers, big or small (small glass jars to can planter to clay planter, it does well in everything). The fern likes water (so mist its leaves from time to time) and shade. It also looks great in bouquets and flower centre pieces (I've never seen it used for some here sha).

Red Acalypha

Thanks to Olerismith and Babythug for this one. I've seen it around but didn't know its name or anything about it

This is a shrub. It does well in full to partial light (the colours are deeper the more sunlight they get). You can propagate it by stem cuttings and it does well with moist soil that doesn't sit in water. It is actually studied and proven to cure over 70% of several fungal skin infections! (there have been published medical papers, just check on Google) and traditionally people have been using it. I think it's a good plant to have around the house if you have space in your compound for it.
