Hello, Nairaland!

Our other visa thread, U.S. Non-immigrant Visas: We’re Listening, has been a success in dispelling some of the myths associated with the visa process. We have enjoyed answering all of your pertinent questions and as we get ready for the upcoming summer cycle that sees a huge increase in student visas, we wanted to create a new forum JUST for applicants with questions about student visas (F1, M1, & J1).

We are U.S. Foreign Service Officers working in Abuja and Lagos and we are looking forward to answering your student related questions. Please note that we do not comment on specific cases, we do not offer advice, and we will not answer abusive or insulting posts.

While we will attempt to explain U.S. immigration policies on student visas and provide overall visa application guidance, any opinions expressed are the personal views of the writer and do not necessarily reflect the views of the United States Government.

There is a separate Immigrant and Diversity Visa thread at https://www.nairaland.com/1792591/u.s-immigration-questions-ask-u.s., also handled by a U.S. Foreign Service Officers in Nigeria, so please use this thread only for questions about student visas. If you have general non-immigrant visa questions, please visit the other thread here, https://www.nairaland.com/1792662/u.s-non-immigrant-visas-listening.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Hello Abuja NIV,

Thank you for the great work. Good to have you here. You have really saved us from the hand of fraudsters in the name of consultants.

I asked a question in the previous tread and would also like to ask again.

My friend went for his appointment yesterday, but was given a TB by the guy checking the documents; He was not allowed for the interview because the barcode on his DS-160 is different from the barcode on his interview appointment letter.

He was told that he will be able to use his receipt after 48hrs but he is not really clear on what to do next.

Does he have to fill another DS-160? please can you explain what he is expected to do.

Secondly, apart from 1-20, SEVIS fee, Admission letter from the school, & Bank statement, is there any other documents that may be required during the interview.

Thank you for your help.

Hello victor4u,

The issue with the DS 160 is something that is handled by CGI and I would recommend to your friend to check in with them here (http://www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/ng-niv-appointmentschedule.asp) - they should be able to help with the technical aspects of the interview scheduling.

As for the documents, students MUST show their I-20 and their SEVIS fee receipt - the rest is up to the discretion of the officer, but 95% of the time, no further documentation will be asked for during the interview for students. Students must show that they are qualified and credible and have a concrete plan for returning back to Nigeria when their studies are over.

You guys are just super awesome.

I'm one satisfied customer of the US embassy, and from the insights you provide here, I just might consider a higher degree in the USA!

Good job!

Hello nedum360,

We are able to look at and verify foreign bank documents, but be advised to all people on this forum, bank documents are NOT required for an F1 visa. The officer may ask for them but they are not required and 95% of the time, the officer will NOT look at documents except the I-20 and the SEVIS receipt.

Hello abujaniv. Thank you for providing this platform to help clarify our doubts as regards student visa process.
I am a PhD applicant who got a Graduate Teaching Assistantship position with the
department I will be joining for the next fall semester. The position waives tuition and covers all living expenses.
Will I still need to go to the embassy with a bank statement?

Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello abujaniv

Thank you for creating this thread to help prospective and admitted students with their student visa process.
I am an MSc student who got a scholarship that covers almost half of the tuition fee.
Will I still need to go to the embassy with a bank statement that covers the whole tuition fee or just the remaining balance of the fees.

Also can i take to the embassy a bank statement belonging to a sponsor different from the one presented to the school to issue the 1-20 (name of sponsor was indicated on 1-20 as the person who will provide funds) due to some changes in circumstance

Thank you.

Hello sirRiddy,

Bank statements are NOT required for an F1 visa. You are welcome to bring those to the interview, but they will most likely not be requested from the officer.

Hello. Thank you for creating this post. I want to go for my masters this fall. I have two toddlers who would go with me. My husband would remain in Nigeria as he has he's work to do. With that said, what evidence do I need to show that we are financially capable for my kids? In addition, my last child is a US citizen, in requesting for the F2, do I need to put he's name as part of my dependant? Especially since he doesn't need a visa.

Hello malory84,

You will need to convince the officer that you have the ability to afford all associated fees and living expenses during your studies - you will do this during the interview, question and answer period. Your son that is a U.S citizen will not need a visa, but it is good practice to disclose all children on the forms that you complete for your visa.

Hello NairaSea23-

The same requirements are true for all students. You must prove to the VO that you are a credible and qualified student. You only need to bring your I20 and your SEVIS receipt. Be prepared to answer questions about why you selected the school you did and how the degree program will help you accomplish your professional goals.

Is there an age limit when applying for an undergraduate study in the states?

Does the VO ask for Toefl or SAT test scores

Your response would be highly appreciated....

Hello Anderson25,

There is no age limit for student visas. However, it is imperative to show that you are a credible and qualified student. This means that the bar is higher to cross for an older student who is now going back to get an Associate's or a Bachelor's degree. You must explain why you have selected the school and the program and how it will enhance your professional goals. Not all universities or colleges require tests, but taking the tests is a great way to determine how successful you will be in school as there is a direct correlation between higher tests scores and success rates in the first few terms of a program.

Hello Anderson25,

We cannot provide information on the chances of a visa being issued as all cases are different. You must answer the officer's questions honestly and clearly explain your choices for school, program and how it will help your professional goals.

Dear VO,

Good afternoon. My elder brother who works in the US invited my dad and I being the last child of the family for the summer holiday, I currently work with my employer for about 2 years now and plan to take my annual leave around July for the purpose of the trip with my dad as he will need assistance during travel due to his age. We went for interview on Monday and the visa officer did not ask my dad a single question, instead he asked me what we were going to do in the US, he also asked me what I do which I told him I work as a Drilling supervisor stating the name of my employer as well, he latter asked if I was married wish I answered NO, he also asked if I have travelled out of the country before which I also answered NO. He then approved my dad and denied me. My concern now is;

After I submitted our application for B1/B2 visa, a school I applied to in the US for my Masters degree granted me admission and I am expecting the admission letter and my form I-20 soon as it has now been couriered. (N.B: this was before we went for the interview but I did not make mention of this new development to the visa officer)

I hope the denial of my B1/B2 visa based on the visa officer's assumption that I might not return won't affect my application for a F-1 student visa.

This is really given me a whole lot of concern as my intentions are genuine and I am going for a Masters degree in the same fied I have my Bachelors degree.

Hello OTUNBACODED,

Your recent application for a B1/B2 will be noted in the system, but the officer you see will look at your F1 case with fresh eyes and ask questions specifically related to that. However, we would advise that you are very upfront with the officer about why you have had two applications so close together and be sure to explain in detail how the school and program you selected further your career goals.
