Thank you for that information and for those asking what the benefits are, you will get to understand better if you are in the public sector cause if u ain't a registered Engr, then your promotion will be limited to certain level.Even for those who are into construction will also understand too, that you can't be a consultant if not registered as an Engr.

NSE is an association
COREN is the body backed by law to register Engineers, NSE does not have this power
It was the former president of COREN who happened to be a former NSE president that initiated making NSE registration mandatory for all engineering personnels. He did this cuz many engineers registered by COREN were not part of NSE as NSE is not responsible for registration of Engineers.

COREN is the parent body, NSE is just an association

Apart from bequeathing you with the Engr. title and collecting outrageous annual practising fee, COREN is not useful to engineering, please do not even mention NSE cuz its so unnecessarily useless yet makes the loudest noise. NSE has never fought for engineers yet they collect annual fees from them, only God knows what the money is used for, EFCC needs to look into this.

Engineers have very poor salary structure yet NSE does nothing but collect annual fees and send their excos on foreign trips

Ignorance at work in ur life.... shocked

But truly who has COREN/NSE helped? I am speaking of engineering firm all those COREN rules are just on paper imagine in an engineering base firm HR, accountant are either earning same or more with the registered engineers especially in all these government and private engineering firms.Where OND evens earns more then B.Eng and combined with the registration by COREN just because of maybe 2years post experience. Engineers are suffering this can't happen with NMA and NJC

This is what has been pushing me off registering. I missed the April diet(registration window) just because of this and other responsibilities. Hopefully, one will be buoyant enough by July/August/September to get on the September Diet bus. Just wished there was a cheaper alternative to this! angry

You're so on-point.

NSE is just like money-making association that only believes in your pocket and not your brain.

I still remember what I experienced during my first attempt at NSE Lagos. Imagine someone marking me down because the Oba of the village I come from insulted him. He practically told me I was gonna fail and truly, I failed the interview even after answering correctly 7 out of 8 questions.
Sat beside me was a mate that couldn't answer correctly 1 question except know where he works- Deltafrik.

My advice has always been DO NOT apply for NSE in LAGOS... Go to places like Akure, Osogbo, Ado-Ekiti. #LessWahala #LessMoney

I paid around 300k to be MNSE... My COREN is on it's way n hopefully by the end of the 2nd quarter, I shld be a R.COREN...

Yes there are! For an engineer, it usually not about titles. It more of problem solving, innovation and ingenuiTy.

So once you a member, u are expected to relate othe engineers and solve problems

Then the workshops organised that one can attend. U. Can only know of these workshops when u say say network of engineers u relate with.

What if you did not do engineering at undergraduate level and you later go for an MSC in engineering,.will you still be entitled to all this?
someone should pls answer this important question.

It's funny when we read of things like this. We can not verify the strong allegations. It is very possible. Some people can be petty and very unreasonable.

Their pettiness cannot dampen the need for engineers to associate and have a statutory body regulating our practise.

induction is 20k
Registrations depends on your year of experience before you register like in my case, I paid 61,800
Local workshop also depend on state e.g kd was 15k when I registered in 2014.

for the OP, you are only entitled to the prefix Engr. when u are COREN certified, that does not stop u from being addressed as Engr.

It’s about time a Nigerian Design Consultancy start taking the design lead on our bridge, rail, highway and building projects. We cannot afford to continue procuring engineering services from abroad.

The Nigerian resident Julius Berger also needs to up their game. The 29 billion naira (145 million dollars) spent on building the cable-stayed 1.4km long lekki-Ikoyi link bridge will build a grandeur and iconic suspension bridge for that bridge span. Julius Berger needs competition from another major residential Design Consultancy.

When a country allows foreign Engineers to come in and design her project, such country will be exposed to an underdevelopment of local Engineers, Capital flight, less employment in the Engineering sector and will also face National Security Issues (the country that built the structures know what the capacity of your infrastructures are and can use them during war time, God forbid!!). Our Engineering Graduates and Technicians are intelligent enough and what they need is the appropriate experience for them to be the best they can possibly be.

It's not about the Professional institution (NSE, Coren, ICE, IStructE) recognition but what an Engineer can deliver, the accreditations will chase you when you have the right experience

Before u do Msc. In engineering you must have studied engineering or a engineering rel course like maths, physics, etc

So yes you can apply but make sure you have practised engineering too for a minimum of 4yrs.

Cheers

I am an Engineer (11 Yrs post grad experience) and to be honest I don't give a poo about having Engr before my name. It is a very naija trait to want to have a title before your name though so I get your scope. In the UK if you are a chartered engineer all you do is have the letters C.Eng after your name on official comms. Again many folk dont care about doing that. lol

Sadly expensive angry but necessary. You can not even be promoted from Level 10 to Level 12 without being COREN registered.
Some Agencies have professional allowance pay 8%, 10% of your monthly gross income which can only be accessible if you are registered, some pay a flat rate of 50k, 100k or 150k irrespective of your monthly salary while depending on how buoyant the FG Agency is.

Thank you so much bro. I find it very pompous that they call people Engineer in a non-work location in Nigeria. You will never see the Engineers that built Burj-Arab, Shard Building and other big projects like the Dubai Skyscrapers been called Engineer John (for Example). People laugh at us for these things.

You don’t even know that Engineers have the CEng MICE until you receive an Email from them. It’s about the experience for an Engineer.
As a Structural Engineer myself I would choose more experience over the institution’s accreditation, not that I don’t want it, I am actually going for it, but it does nothing for the client if you cannot deliver.

If you must pratice as an Engineer in (govt circles)NIGERIA and win those juicy government contracts or help some big shot win the contract by fulfilling the engineering requirements while collecting your share, then you have to be registered.

Yes it is beneficial becoming chartered through either IMeche, MICE,MIET, MEI depending on your discipline. I advice you to go ahead with it. It will obviously enhance your employability and remuneration. The most important way of seeing it is this, with each passing year your degree certificate loses its appeal most especially if your job role is not in line with your degree. Becoming a chartered engineer demonstrates not only your technical engineering and managerial competence but it also demonstrates your commitment to the profession and your continued development which is not expected to wane until you retire.

And you can also call yourself Engr. Shine12 whenever you are in a naija setting cheesy
