Good day VO,

Hope this message meets you well. I am a Nigerian residing in Canada with a PR status. I recently got married, my wife resides in Nigeria and we are still gathering the documents to apply for her to join me. However, she got admission to a school in the US to resume in Fall of 2016 (we have received the I-20 and SEVIS receipt.

I was thinking that she waits till she gets to Canada but the Spousal PR processing in Canada takes a while. She really wants to go for the program because it will enhance her career prospect.

Is it advisable to apply from Nigeria?

Hello rolaesh,

You can typically only miss 2 interviews before you have to pay another fee, but check with CGI Nigeria if you believe that the appointments were missed by error. The website is http://www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/ng-niv-appointmentschedule.asp

Hello mevisbleek,

Your wife can apply in either place - but keep in mind that she will have to explain her plans to depart the U.S. after graduation.

Hello AbujaNIV,

Assuming someone is going for studies this fall 2016 and has already gotten his F1 visa. due to some reasons, he wont be able to meet start classes in fall 2016 and defers his admission to spring 2017. I understand he will have to get a new i20 from the school but will he also need to apply for a new visa or the earlier visa will cover all that?

Thanks

Hello lionlee216,

You do not need to reapply as long as you have a new I-20 and your status is still active in SEVIS. You will need to verify in SEVIS that your school has updated your status and changed your start date. You may get a few extra questions at the POE, but just explain why you deferred your admission.

Good day VO, please I need an expert advice here. I was denied an F1 visa yesterday in Lagos.
I applied for a language course in ESL because I work as an ESL instructor in a non-English speaking country (Republic of Georgia) and it is compulsory that I get recertification at my place of work.
I am still perplexed as to why the VO denied my visa. Although I filled in my application that I wasn't working at the moment (because I didn't bring my contract of employment letter with me to Nigeria as I never thought I would be needing it). However, I have made plans for it to be mailed to me. I earn an income of $2700 monthly.
Please, advise me on how my re-application should go. This course is compulsory for my career. The course starts on the 6th of June and I intend to reapply for the F1 early next week.
Please, What and what should I do differently this time around?

Hello tjwolex,

You are welcome to apply again. You will need to explain very clear and concisely why you need an ESL course if you are already an ESL teacher and why you came back to Nigeria to apply if you live in Georgia. The officer is looking for proof that you are a credible and qualified student and that you will return to your country of residence after your program is completed. If you do not live in Nigeria, it may be harder to prove that your ties are strong here and compelling a return here. Have you tried to apply from Georgia?

Yes I tried to apply from Georgia but I was told that I stand better chances if I apply from my country of origin. Besides, I came back to Nigeria for vacation and since it is compulsory that I get recertified, I decided to apply for the course.

hello abujaniv i have a question concerning the ds160 that part where they ask for US POINT OF CONTACT where you are required to fill the surname and given names of the school official and also the organization name which is obviously the name of d school, Below, they ask about your relationship with what you have filled above and one is supposed
to pick school official among d options then you go
ahead to fill the address, phone number and email
address of the school official. the part I'm having
issue with is the organization name and the surname and given names of the school official. it happens that i cannot fill the two at the same time, the other
automatically ticks do not know as soon as you
start filling one of them. I hope u understand

Hello abujaniv / Student Visa Team

My phone was recently stolen and it contained a very clear picture of my F1 visa. That is, every detail contained in the visa was clearly visible in the picture. The thieves may or may not have access to the picture, depending on whether the picture was on my phone memory, or the external memory card.

Do I need to do anything?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

I am in a similar situation right now. I applied for a B1 visa to attend a business conference in America at the University of Washington, but my visa was denied on the 11th February 2016, Reason being that i was on unable to demonstrate strong ties with my country which will show that i will return to my home country after my visit to the United states. I have concern if this will affect my new F1 visa application to study in America. I applied for visa on the 5th of May 2016 and my Embassy interview is on the 31st May 2016. Please can anyone assist with helpful advice/information?

abujaniv:

Hello OTUNBACODED,

Your recent application for a B1/B2 will be noted in the system, but the officer you see will look at your F1 case with fresh eyes and ask questions specifically related to that. However, we would advise that you are very upfront with the officer about why you have had two applications so close together and be sure to explain in detail how the school and program you selected further your career goals.

Hello salo4resolute,

First of all, NEVER use an agent for help with a visa. Anyone that charges you for advice or has tricks and tips to get a visa, will do you more harm than good. We have seen very good applicants get refused because some agent incorrectly filled out their DS160 or provided them with fake documents or travel stamps. They do not have your best interest at heart - you should only rely on U.S. sponsored pages such as www.travel.state.gov, www.usembassy.nigeria.gov, and https://educationusa.state.gov/ to name a few.

There is no limit on age for studying - visa have been granted to 50 year olds going to the U.S. to study BECAUSE they were qualified and credible students with a clear professional goal about why studying at a particular institution in the U.S. will help further their career and life goals. As an older student, the bar is higher because we expect you to be able to clearly discuss why you selected the school and the course of study and why it makes sense at your age and how it will boost your earnings and your career.

Hello,
I just obtained an acceptance letter and I-20 for ESL. I originally applied for M.sc but was offered a conditional admission to enroll for ESL as my Test of English score was a mark below the cut-off. Please I would like to know if this on its own could have any effect on my chances of being issue F1 visa. Thank you.

Good day Abuja VO,

Hope this message meets you well. Please, my wife made an mistake on the DS160 form. She is applying for an F1 visa, she has a valid B1 visa. She was denied a B1 visa in 2012. While completing the DS160 form, she mistakenly filled NO to the question that asks if you have ever been denied a USA Visa.

Please, will this pose a problem during the interview? Do you advise that she fills out a new DS-160 form.

Look forward to hearing from you....

Hello graco,

The same qualifications are required for all student visas. You must explain to the officer what your plans are, how you selected that school and why it is good for your professional goals and career. From a country where English is the medium for education in schools, it is a higher bar to reach when explaining how you are still a credible and qualified student if you were not able to show that you are proficient in English. It may serve you to retake the TOEFL, so that you don't have to waste your time and money on an English proficiency course.
