Forget graphics, if the story and gameplay are weak, the game has failed its purpose.
Yomieluv, go and look at The Order: 1886, one of the best looking games ever, but it failed in gameplay.

I agree with Missie Cao and the op,my comment will be thus;we have to look at gaming as a whole, firstly, video games aren't free/open source like facebook et al where the owner has the right per se to do whatsoever he wants on it and we the users have little or no say, after all it's free.Imagine a gamer buying a game for so much only to end up playing and having an anti-climax after all of it.Good games are know for their replay value(the higher the better) regardless of graphics. That's why most folks tend to Soccer/football games more than others because of it's high replay value(money well spent).Secondly, most programmers have seized this craze for graphics and technology as a means to cheat us,They've gone lazy and hide all their shortcomings behind graphics of the game but still want to earn their as much cash inspite of their incompetence. To be fair to them, programming isn't easy but i expect them to do the logical thing(create games according to your strengths).Core gamers know a good game when they see and play it.I'm no programmer but i believe certain constraints come with it that don't allow for them and us to have the best of both worlds(something has to give, graphics or gameplay),story has nothing to do with it.No programming company has an excuse in the area of story. So it's either you have a balance of graphics and gameplay as this enhances the replay value hence the gamer is satisfied and considers his money well spent. If anything should be sacrificed;it shouldn't be story or gameplay, graphics should be it after all no matter how hard they try they will and can never recreate us as we are and put it into gaming. The best they can do is make it life like.Lastly, games are supposed to be mentally tasking, challenging and fun as well, you surely can't get that with graphics.Ciao to Cao and my fellow gamers.

Storyline!!!!

This is what made nfs carbon better than nfs most wanted even if MW has better graphics

Carbon has a better gameplay too.

For sport games, omo its graphics o. Cos poor graphics can be frustrating. Imagine referee obstructing my player movement in fifa. That can never happen in pes
Plus neymar resembles monkey in fifa

Graphics are extremely important.

I tried playing some ps2/ps1 games recently and just couldn't carry on.

For me I will say a good storyline with better graphics... If a game lack any of the two, it's a NO NO for me..
.
I played Far Cry 2 on my PC, the game have good graphics but the storyline is not too good or not good at all cause I just wake up one-day and uninstall it, it got very boring at some point... but game like GTA5, despite the fact that my PC lack in the games specs requirements, I still download it and was able to able to play with low settings (still lag tho)... The things is it has better storyline and superb graphics (even on lower settings)...
.
Also MK9 have nice storyline, played it and love it.. I have MKX but I haven't play the storyline cause of lag, but it's also have nice graphics and storyline (so I heard)...
.
the two work together for me..

Gameplay is more important than storyline. Gameplay is definitely more important than graphics. Infact the only thing more important than gameplay is gameplay.

Imagine if Grand Theft Auto V as beautiful as it is walks like a drunken man or drives like the tyres are made of rubber and shoots like a blind man, would you still be playing it?
Or if Mortal Kombat X or Street Fighter V with all their beauty only allowed just punch and kicks, would you even buy them?

Graphics catches the eye quite alright but gameplay is eternal.

People still enjoy Mortal Kombat 3, even ranking it as still the best in the series above Mortal Kombat X. People are still replaying Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas till this day & it's definitely not because of the graphics. Many games that survive till today owe it to their fantastic gameplay and not graphics or storyline. Examples are Street Fighter Alpha, Mortal Kombat 3, God of War, Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas, Marvel vs Capcom 2, e.t.c.

And lest I forget, the recent Xbox release Quantum Break while praised for its graphics & storyline was criticized for having little gameplay, making the IP more movie than game.

So, Mr. Moderator, accurate timekeeper, panel of judges and guests, I hope that with these few points of mine, I have convinced you that gameplay is the most important of the three.

Thank You.

When it comes to adventure and action games, storyline and game play does the magic.

What am I using graphics to do if the story and gameplay are rubbish?

Think about Burnout: Paradise the most graphically superior game in the burnout series but also the worst.

Look at The God of War series it's widely accepted that the 1st two are the best in the series even if they have the worse graphics not counting the PSP games.

Or is it later Gears of War games or Halo or even Call of Duty?, all these games where graphical beauty were given priority over gameplay and story they rate lower than the previous games in their respective series with uglier looks.
very true assertion by you, mu experience with gears of war was utter rubbish, I was sent a limted edition cd and all the complete packaging stuff but playing the game became a problem because the story and game play didn't just freak me, had to abandon the game after playing it just three times, and guess what game I dumped it for?...call of duty (1,2,3,) which I finished sharply and in quick succession.

i beg to differ, god of war 3 is superior to previous games in the gameplay and graphics department, and it was the most epic entry in the series.

your post dsnt make sense. Story in video games has been there since the nes days, only with limited tech, they couldnt do it exactly how it should be done.

Am sure you hvnt played chrono trigger from the snes, which had great story to go with it, stories has always been essential.

And in recent times, we see good stories in games like the last of us, uncharted 2 , red dead redemption etc.

Gaming has evolved past when you just kill enemies to reach the last boss (contra).

you do realise gow 3 is the continuation of gow 2 right? So its not like it had a seperate story, its just finishing what gow2 started and you its understandable that its story would be less impactful.

On the other hand, gow 3 had better gameplay, battles, world, and overall epicness

oops, Its my bad I dint personalised my claim but as long as am concerned. in the hack and slash category no game beats the darksiders. the storyline of God of War for me it's to boring and I have heard it in different platforms and that's why I think the darksiders brings something new to the gaming community. cheers
Re: Graphics Vs Storyline Vs Gameplay Which Is More Important? by ndividual: 4:11pm On Apr 29, 2016
Graphics is the easiest to achieve relative to all three. Plus, its the easiest way to grab the eyeballs of everyone. Its an easy marketing point.

Storyline and Gameplay? Not so much. Any new breakthrough in gameplay gets copied to the point of it becoming standard (remember cover fire?).

Storyline & Gameplay require creativity that's not afraid to depart from the norms and bring a fresh but enjoyable perspective. But the industry has become so high-risk publishers are playing it safe

In order of priority:
1) Gameplay (it is a game afterall)
2) Storyline (Make me invested to see the end)
3) Graphics (Good enough not to distract me from 1 & 2)

True, it's just that I realised that graphics is not the be all and end all that some folks on here try to make it seem. There are some games that I've played that I really got into the story eg Life is Strange. Now, I'm not usually a fan of these type of games, but I got fully engrossed in LiS, I wanted to know what happened next, and the added benefit that I could change my decisions by rewinding back time just really did it for me. There was a scene where a character died & I literally started yelling "Rewind! Rewind!" while frantically pressing the L2 button while waiting for the cutscene to end. I followed Max through all the episodes, that when the final choice came, I didn't hesitate, after all the things I've done to get her character that far. Even if it was not the logical choice. Because of LiS, I've decided to actually give similar free games I've gotten from PS+ a try (in this case King's Quest).

In fact thanks to watching some game movies, I even got into The Wolf Among Us, I was so intrigued by the overall story the episodes were telling, I've been waiting for the price to go down so I could buy it for myself.

Then you see games like Super Meatboy and you wonder how are they so popular? That's simply down to gameplay.

for me gameplay is the most important.
followed by story line. look at NFS underground 2 for example. it has fantastic night mode graphics but the physics of the game play is so poor. it has a very bad story line also. so boring playing it. now look at NFS most wanted. the game play is very nice and the story line makes you want to defeat all blacklist members to face razor. though graphics matters too but wen graphics is high at the expense of gameplay, then... why will I even play it

Better gameplay is arguable since it's basically the same formula with the 1st two.
As for the battles, they didn't really have as much impact, the others had suspenseful and exciting build up to big fight, fought and interacted with numerous creatures and personalities from Greek mythology, before that final fight with an Olympian god, but with GoW 3 you literally kill a good in the very 1st mission then go on to kill every other greek God throughout the course of the game like they were minor characters.

It was like they didn't care about the story anymore, they just wanted a reason for Kratos to kill things in the goriest way they could think of, by the end I was asking myself "what was even the point?".
