Good day Abuja VO,

Hope this message meets you well. Please, my wife made an mistake on the DS160 form. She is applying for an F1 visa, she has a valid B1 visa. She was denied a B1 visa in 2012. While completing the DS160 form, she mistakenly filled NO to the question that asks if you have ever been denied a USA Visa.

Please, will this pose a problem during the interview? Do you advise that she fills out a new DS-160 form.

Look forward to hearing from you....

Your response would be highly appreciated. Sorry to bother your team this early.

Hello pristine88,

You will be best served by being upfront with the officer about your dual intent - you intend to study in the U.S. while you wait for your immigrant petition to become current. Again, with this kind of dual intent, the bar is sometimes higher and you will need to explain how you plan to return to Nigeria and wait for the IV petition to be current and that you understand the negative ramifications of remaining in the U.S. illegally or out of status. You are not mandated to pay tuition before you receive the I-20 - that is your acceptance to the school.

Hello vo,

I currently have a b1/b2 visa which will expire in jan 2018 and which I have also used for the purpose it was granted and I am happy to be back in Nigeria.

I came across a study program which will last 8 months beginning in oct this year but the institution offering this program does not provide i20 for f1 visa application for that program.

I want to know the appropriate steps to take if I still intend to pursue this program so as not to misuse my current visa.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hello,
I applied for a f1 visa and my interview date is next week. my sponsor currently resides in the US. Is it okay for her to send a scanned copy of her statement of account which I may need for the interview?
The original statement of account was lost in transit and I had already booked my interview date.

Dear VO
My friend was denied, a B1/B2 visa category and was not really told the reason why he was denied but the last question the Consular officer asked him was " have you traveled out of your country before ?" and he said no and the Consular officer replied sorry you are not qualified for this visa. From his experience i think that previous travel experience is a big determinant for B1/B2 visa class and his visa denial was due to the fact that he has not traveled out of Nigeria previously , Does previous travel experience also determine Student visa? will lack of previous travel experience also cause a denial for student visa ?

Hello Everyone, please i need an advice. I and my wife applied for USA visa last year Nov and we were refused... my uncle who lives in Florida invited us back then but the consular didnt ask us much question before we were refused.

My questions are:

1, i applied as a self employed with a certain business name but i am now into another business, can i use the new business documents to apply?

2, we intend to go to New York this time for holiday and we will be renting an holiday apartment, is that advice-able or is it a must that my uncle still invite us?

Please your advice will be much appreciated.

Hello. Is there any major difference between F1 and J1 visa? They said J1 has stringent conditions. How true is that?

And what is the probability of getting an F1 visa for a student who has been offered a full ride undergrad scholarship by a US college?

Hello victor4u,

The issue with the DS 160 is something that is handled by CGI and I would recommend to your friend to check in with them here (http://www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/ng-niv-appointmentschedule.asp) - they should be able to help with the technical aspects of the interview scheduling.

As for the documents, students MUST show their I-20 and their SEVIS fee receipt - the rest is up to the discretion of the officer, but 95% of the time, no further documentation will be asked for during the interview for students. Students must show that they are qualified and credible and have a concrete plan for returning back to Nigeria when their studies are over.

Regards,
Student Visa Team

Please what exactly could somebody say or present to show that you have a concrete plan for returning to Nigeria after studies..I would really appreciate your response....

Hello AbujaNIV,
Please i need clarification.
I got my F1 Visa in January but unfortunately could not travel. The school deffer-ed my admission and send me another 120 form. I have also done sevis transfer from the old ID to the new one.
Can I still use my Visa to resume in Fall as I intend to?
Some people say I do not need to reappear .
Please help clarify on this.

Thank you

Hello cbaldwin2013,

You cannot study or do a long term course on a B1/B2 visa. You will need to apply for an F1 or an M1 from an accredited school that will provide you with an I-20. You may chose to find another institution that will provide the proper documentation.

Hello kayuscares4u,

Tests like the GRE are one way officers assess qualifications, but it is not required. Be prepared to clearly and concisely explain your reasons for study and how it fits in with your career goals.

Hello anderson1223,

The requirements for students are slightly different for tourists. Students must prove that they are credible and qualified students, while tourists must show strong ties to Nigeria.

Hello akagson,

F1 and J1 are very different visa classes. F1 are to study in the U.S. while a J1 is an exchange program, that can include a study portion but it is not what you would get to pursue a degree in the U.S. Scholarships are a great way to prove that you can pay for your education and they often are given for good grades or test scores, which also help to prove credibility.

Hello UNIXLover,

If your visa is still valid, you can travel, but you must make sure that your SEVIS number is the same as the one printed on your visa in the annotation. A few comments though - you may have trouble at the POE with the CBP agents because you did not start as intended. Also, your visa will only be valid for another year after you start, which means you will have to come back to Nigeria for a renewal, if you plan to leave the U.S. during your studies.
