I remember meeting Wole Soyinka's "supposed" friend at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in 2011. This man started giving us Wole 's history and his too while speaking grammar that I had never heard before in my life.

He explained how Wole first wrote down the book "The Man Died" on "tissue papers" because he was too broke to buy an actual note book.

Been wondering if it was true.

Op Pls Google zainab alkali and Abubakar gimba. And again, there is only one nobel prize winner of literature, he is the number one. His works cuts across all literary genre, unlike chinua achebe that only writes prose fiction.

Not just writing.

The Igbo man is highly philosophical. A very rationale specie who strives to understand life at the basic and cosmic levels.

This quest for knowledge and his unusual struggle to assume the highest levels of consciousness means a lot. Contributing in no small way to the complex yet effective social systems the Igbo community is known for, the Igbo man continues to appreciate the need for a deeper understandings of the workings of life.

Chinua Achebe spares no ink in trying to expose the Igbo consciousness is his writings.

Igbo is mature and yet still growing.

Proudly Igbo!

We are supposed to be one Nigeria right? Like where a yoruba, Igbo or an hausa man is successful a Nigerian is successful. Why are we now getting touchy about the success of fellow Nigerians.
In the world of literature, ur tribe, race or origin doesn't count but your ability to convey your thoughts into a comprehensible piece does.
I applaud these great minds and I wish to be listed amongst the best one day.

Loool.

Funny list...though I have never heard about most of the people on that list.

However, I do know that Ben Okri is light years ahead of Chimanmanda in terms of literary skills. Heck, Helen Oyeyemi writes far better than she does.

As for the King of them all - Wole Soyinka is on the throne by himself.

[size=28pt]OP, JP Clark should replace Elechi Amadi.

John Pepper Clark, pseudonym J.P. Clark-Bekederemo (born April 6, 1935, Kiagbodo, Nigeria) the most lyrical of the Nigerian poets, whose poetry celebrates the physical landscape of Africa. He was also a journalist, playwright, and scholar-critic who conducted research into traditional Ijo myths and legends and wrote essays on African poetry.

[size=28pt]John Munonye should be included.

Obijulius:
Pleas create your own list of Hausa writers and move it to the front page - Elechi Amadi, Ola Rotimi and Wole Soyinka are now Igbo.

@op: your list is perfect. Adichie, Soyinka and Achebe deserve their spot on this list!!!! I have read books from almost all the writers but these three stand out.

Nice one

I shouldn't have dignified a response to a bleak mind but I guess u needed to be informed and thus my response.
Have you ever heard of D.O. Fagunwa, Mamman Vatsa, Akilu Aliu, Dan Fulani, Abimbola Adelakun, Zainab Alkali,Uwem Akpan, Tolu Ajayi, Gabriel Okara. Etc.
I know some of the's names are strange to you probably because you don't carry out proper research before writing.
In view of this, You are strongly advised to change the misleading title from 10 Greatest writers in Nigerian History to 10 GREATEST WRITERS I PREFERED.
By so doing, nobody will crucify you.

[size=28pt]Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is not yet a great writer.
She is not greater than Helen Oyeyemi.
In a 2016 interview with Slate, Oyeyemi was named as one of the "most gifted" writers at work today.
