modified:
Just left her Wikipedia page where it states she is British even though we know where her true origins lie and amongs her many awards the Man Booker prize ain't there

He was also a journalist, playwright, and scholar-critic who conducted research into traditional Ijo myths and legends and wrote essays on African poetry.

Strange, this is even my first time of hearing about that your Helen Oyeyemi ooor whatever.
Bruv Chimanmanda is good better than Helen in my opinion but that doesn't take anything from Helen she is also as good as it gets

I love this thread, the bashings notwithstanding, its highly informative.

Im not a fan of reading African novels but ive read the books of Elechi Amadi, Chinua Achebe, Buchi Emecheta, Ola Rotimi and JP Clark.

Funny enough, never read any book by Wole Soyinka. But for him to win the Nobel prize, he's up there.

Quota System has truly damaged the mind of an average Nigerian, Everything must and should be shared equally. Someone was even listing out Names of some Hausa writers who probably wrote there books with Hausa and where only read in the Hausa community, I'll fault the OP in some of the names on his List of Nigerian Greatest writers, but then 70% of the names deserve their position, At JP Clark should be on the list............ While some people out of tribal bigotry said Prof. Wole Soyinka should be ahead Prof Chinua Achebe because he has the Noble prize award, I mean that's their only excuse "Noble prize". From the topic the OP was referring to the "10 Greatest Literary Writers In Nigeria History", the emphasis is on "Greatest Literary Writers" and not the biggest award, if it were to be the biggest award, I will give it to Wole Soyinka any day but here is for the "Greatest Literary Writers" and the OP rightly place the Father of modern African writing as the number one. Common guys this tribal sh*t is becoming too much to bear.......
But what makes writers great? Awards acquired for their works is what makes them great and not insinuations and thought. I love Things fall apart and believe is one of the greatest novel to come out of Africa. For certain reason the author never made it at the Nobel prize.

Probably he never met the criteria to be awarded a Nobel prize which left a great dent on his resume.

The OP has no background history worth of note to rate any Author to warrant a front page. Like religion MOD should be sensitive to pushing gossips to front burner least they misinform future generations that will rely on the Internet for research. Cyprian Ekwensi and JP Clark are among the top five writers in Africa...where are their names in Nigeria's so called 10

You people haf come again please leave Chimanmanda for me biko, If you had said Ben Okri I agree with you but Helen Oyeyemi come on bruv and as to Wole being the King of them all you seem to forget a Chinua Achebe is also on that list...

Also, in terms of literary gift...Helen Oyeyemi is much more gifted than Chimanmanda. I believe Chimanmanda just got a huge break with the help of Achebe and cos "half of a yellow sun" was based on a bloody civil war. And the world generally gravitate towards things like that. That's also the only decent book she has written thus far - the rest are trash and they lack soul. She's also more into commercialised crap than the art.

Cyprian Ekwensi is on the list. It would have been a sacrilege of immense proportion not to have him there. The adventure of Api written by - Desmond Ohaegbulam was one novel I read growing up... I read it twice at a go, it has excellent settings with vivid story telling style. Then we cherish books.. The guy with the latest book is well known all over town as we queue up to borrow.

Telephone conversation of Wole Soyinka was a poetry of intense quality... DSTV is killing the upbringing of our children.

before Chinua Achebe, Cyprian ekwensi, Wole Soyinka, Flora Nampa and the rest of them, arrived on the literary scene in the 60's, I believe that honor should be given to the forerunner of them all....AMOS TUTUOLA : whose classical novel of magic realism " The Palmwine Drinkard", opened the floodgates of African ( not just Nigerian) writers works to be published in in the West.

he may not be the greatest of them all, but he surely does deserve to be amongst the top 10.

my humble opinion.

Nobel prize is just an award every writer mustn't be presented with the award to be recognized as the best take a look at times most influential people in the world , richest people in the world, greats in every field of life how many of them have the award even uncle Shakespeare never got it that is to tell u that the award is limited to time and chance
My God see response. But if it is chinua achebe that got the prize, u will praise him to the highest heaven. So Nobel prize is just an award, I don't blame u but ur reasoning. Go and google those influential people that have taken the award and their antecedents. U need knowledge.

I asked the same question "Who the hell is D.O Fagunwa", believe me most people if not all don't know him, for someone you claim to be the greatest Nigerian writer....... His name should ring a bell at least, his name should be associated with his ground breaking work, I have a Friend his name is Oluwale Matthew, we call him Wale Soyinka, because Wale Soyinka is popular and is associated with success, during my university days I had this guy in our football team his surname is Achebe, that's what everyone calls him, till today non of us know his first name, it was Easier to call him that, in fact whenever I call him Achebe ''Things fall apart'' comes to mind. Hope you understand my point?

I don't really want to get into this cos folks will most likely turn to a tribal dyck waving contest. And I'm not really familiar with Nigerian literature - apart from the popular ones. Loved the first part of your comment I don't want a tribalistic war on this thread either that being said I agreed with you about Ben Okri the guys is somewhat underated and if you noticed I said as much albeit not in as many words. Him over Chimamanda is understandable. Now unto the matter of Helen vs Chimamanda you're right her first novel was about a civil war and the world generally "gravitates" to such things, She, Helen is truly gifted writer. That being said Chimamanda is also gifted this is an excerpt from her Wikipedia page Adichie has been called "the most prominent" of a "procession of critically acclaimed young anglophone authors [that] is succeeding in attracting a new generation of readers to African literature" and her third book " Americanah" which I love so much was put among the top ten books of 2013 by the New York times so I think that settles the fact that she is just as gifted as Helen or better, she has achieved all this with just three books by the way compared to Helens five or six dunno now. There is something that I also want to talk about tho just my opinion but I would love to hear yours on it also. As an African writer breaking into the literary world and doing so with books whose plots are centered around an The African world is no mean feat it's one of the reason Chinua Achebe is held in high regard, that people all over read a book that predominantly talks about the Igbo culture or has its plot centered around it, which is something they don't understand but can now relate to because of the literary prowess of the individual who wrote the book, the ability for him to do that i.e. make that world so real to them is pure genius. The few who have been able to do this have become some of Africa's great I'm talking of the like of Chinua, Camara Laye and Wole Shoyinka. This I believe is one of the reasons that makes Chimamanda outstanding she mixes that blend of Nigeria and the World in such a very unique way, with such ease and is able to sell it to not just Nigerians but the whole world.
