I just took my time today to read about the "Tucano jet" ; I never knew it's a very awesome bird that has seing much action in war/CION and incredible payload, avionic system and armament.

My question is why would our top brass hesitate to go to Embraer Defense and Security in Brazil and get these affordable/cost efficient jets. I mean these is a jet that has a beautiful performance to its credentials;

Afghan,
Braszil;"anti-farc military operations"
Chile,
Colombia,
Dominican Republic,
Ecuador and even united states...etc.

So why av we being waiting all these years, if united states refuse then let's get our brown new from Brazil.

Embraer would need US permission to sell the planes to Nigeria because of certain component issues. The engine is made in the US for example and this means automatically before it can be sold to any country, Embraer first has to get a green light from the US. Considering the US-Nigeria relationship, that would not have been possible. And if they forcefully sell them to Nigeria, that would automatically put them into problems with sourcing parts from the US in future and Nigeria would not be able to but engine parts, especially to service their stock.
In my opinion, the problem is that Nigeria has never been serious about anything. SU-25 is a dedicated ground attack aircraft, better than the Tucano in all aspects and it is being produced up till now. Also, the price is in the same range as the Tucano. The only advantage the Tucano has is the "cheaper" operational cost. Theoretically, the operational cost of the Super Tucano is about half that of the SU-25. But then the SU 25 has triple the pay load, better protection and survivability (consider the armoured cockpit and twin R-195 engines that can survive 12.7 mm rounds) that only the A10-Warthog can match, longer loiter time, better armament, redundancy...if you consider the overall advantages, plus the fact that the nation least likely to kill your deal or ground your equipment through sanctions is Russia, you would chose SU 25.
Nigeria needs to think long term in acquisition too. You just don't want to acquire something for boko haram only, you want to acquire something that serves a long term, extended purpose, beyond insurgency threat. Super Tucano is good, but the airforce should think more strategically.

OFF TOPIC....

Get Ready, NATO: Russia's Cold War T-72 Tank Is Set for a Big Upgrade

http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/get-ready-nato-russias-cold-war-t-72-tank-set-big-upgrade-15642

I was quite happy to read this. If Nigeria means business, Nigeria can buy off a large stock of T-72 from different Russian arrpoved sources and upgrade them under this program. If Nigeria has 250 T-72 with this upgrade, you have a tank in the class of T-90 or most modern tanks out there for a fraction of the cost!
The size of Nigeria of today requires at least 600 tanks but then due to cost, the country can key into this upgrade to get 250 upgraded T-72 and then buy 100 T-90 MS, all tanks conditioned to the harsh, hot Nigerian climate. This would be a steal for Nigeria and for a reasonable length of time to come (at least until 2030), the army can put money into other equipment and forget about buying more tanks.

Just like he said before, Brazil will also source most of the parts from US just like Sweden source Gripen's parts from them. EMB312 tucano is even different from super tucano. I prefer the super tucano sha.

The bird is a fantastic air craft. With the Super-Tucano.... I really could careless about what the American media has to say about Nigeria.

The Super-Tucano is simply the world's best COIN aircraft. Yes it looks like the "Spit-Fire" from world War II, but it's a Spit-Fire with modern, 4 GEN Avionics, impressive recon/loiter time, no fighter jet would give you 8 hours of loiter time, day/night bombing capabilities and an impressive weapons load.

In 2013, Vice-President Namadi Sambo had a bi-lateral talk with the current President of Brazil(Temer), when the latter was still V.P. Namadi Sambo indicated strong interests in the Air Craft, however the Americans blocked the sale.

BRASILIA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua)

Sambo expressed Nigeria’s interest in
purchasing Brazilian-made Super Tucano airplanes, a
move that would reduce Brazil’s 5-billion-U.S. dollar trade
deficit with the African nation.
“Nigeria is Brazil’s main trade partner on the Africa."

So, there is enough evidence that we tried to purchase the plane.

It's not a jet, it's a Turboprop plane. It is great for COIN, but won't last in a conflict where the enemy has some sort of coordinated Air Defence System.

The problem is 70% of the parts of the Super-Tucano are from the U.S.

There is also similar problem with the Gripen which uses 30% American parts, including it's pratt & Whitney Engine.

The T-129 from Turkey also uses American engines. So in essence we are pretty much fvcked and we do not have a lot to choose from.

It is a great plane...... The best plane for our current requirements. However it is imperative that we also replace our front-line fighter jets with proper fighter jets.

So, there's a place for the JF-17, Super-Tucano and Super Mushak in our Air Force.

The T-90 has proven it's mettle in Syria. It is a great Tank. We should go full trottle for the T-90. 250 units of T-90 tanks, supported by 300 units of light tanks/IFV.

Getting the T-72 as well as the T-90 is a waste and does nothing but duplicate capabilities.

An upgraded vehicle would only give you 10 years of active service life before it becomes a thirsty dinosaur.

They av nothing to offer than sanctions.

I pray that sales of the Tucano jets are blocked, so we face russia and China for better options.

I'm not aware that SU-25s are still been made, most countries buy surplus stock SU-25s or upgrade older models.

I agree we need to think long term interms of acquisitions however at the moment realities are realities. It can't happen just yet.

Super-Tucano consumes less fuel, has less operational cost and has are larger loiter time.

I support Nigeria buying only T-90 tanks. But then, Nigeria is not willing to pay up...anyway, the T-72 upgrade is not just something peripheral. It is more like building a new tank because the old tank is stripped down to its carcass, it gets a new, more powerful engine and drive system, new electronics, new sighting systems, new armour package...this is more or less a new tank, that kind of upgrade does not make your acquisition a financial burden at all. And considering the fact that it comes at a few hundreds of thousands of dollars a tank, it is a BARGAIN. The question though is will Russia allow Uralvagonzavod to sell an upgrade kit to the T-72B3 version? Is the Nigerian military even ready to do any acquisition? Are they willing to do an open, transparent acquisition that maximises the reach of the money spent?
Personally, I wish to see Nigeria fielding only only T-90 tanks in their hundreds!

If we run an open, transparent corruption limited process, we should be able to afford 200+ T-90 tanks for sure. However we need to show the political willingness to make such a purchase.

However, an MBT purchase has to be followed immediately with a light tank or IFV order.

A cashier at the Nigerian Air Force headquarters, Emmanuel Abu, who earlier testified in the case as the second prosecution witness, had narrated to the court the role he played in the alleged monthly diversion of N558.2m from NAF accounts by Badeh.

Abu said he routinely converted the N558.2m to dollars, which the prosecution alleged was being handed over to the former air force chief monthly.

Abu, who was led in evidence by the lead prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs(SAN), on Wednesday said he converted N558.2m monthly removed from NAF’s Personnel and Emolument account for 14 months between November 2012 and December 2013.

He said within the 14 months period, a total of over N7.8bn was set aside and converted to dollars

Ok boss, let's conflate human lives to the cost of tomatoes to demonstrate 'laxity'!

Surely the rot wasn't started from Jonathan, but with stories like this showing hard nosed thieving in the middle of a war, I got to ask that question.

Highest oil levels and we still barely scratched the surface in levels of hardware.

For all I care, the new president would have been better as EFCC chairman seeing his handling of other sectors but this is a military topic and I sure would ask over again as to what Jonathan was doing.

Yet you are using the same hardware bought by the previous admin to fight boko haram?

Pray, Has Oga even bought kettle for washing blokkos since he came in

And by the way, isn't it shettima that said boko haram is better armed than the military; Now buhari says boko haram are not better armed but are using weapons seized from the army bases to defeat the soldiers?

If Jonathan didn't buy any weapons then what magnitude of firepower was seized from the military bases

Something doesn't add up

BlackBaron:

Ok boss, let's conflate human lives to the cost of tomatoes to demonstrate 'laxity'!

Surely the rot wasn't started from Jonathan, but with stories like this showing hard nosed thieving in the middle of a war, I got to ask that question.

Highest oil levels and we still barely scratched the surface in levels of hardware.

For all I care, the new president would have been better as EFCC chairman seeing his handling of other sectors but this is a military topic and I sure would ask over again as to what Jonathan was doing.

@blackbaron don't even let us go into such topics, it might turn into another argument or derail the thread. Those military chiefs r fucken too corrupt even at the expense of those soldiers fighting & dying in soft skimmed hilux vehicle.
The then national security adviser once called the frontline troops carward's in a UN security council meeting. How do u except troops to lay down there lives when funds meant for arms procurement r being diverted into personnel pockets.
May God av mercy on these country.

You wait and see the the procurement coming up...not some rusty-72.
My only pain is those bokos will not be able to taste the wrath of those machines...?
