Google was not the first search engine but they came up with good algorithm pagerank. una think say na just to crawl links, what about the storage to put the links. you can use any language to build search engine but you need to experience before you can do that. u must consider so many things like architecture, scalability, falt-tolerant,speed,storage,algorithm and so on. Google no release some of their algorithms so that you no know how to build some of their powerful internals used in Google search engine. all we know here in Nigeria is to learn language, rebuild what have been built before,they can't write or read algorithm. make all programmers wise up. big techs don't use only one language, so remove eye and believe say only php and mysql fit build search engine.

That is why i was saying that i go don reach heaven before them finish this search engine - wey no fit find goat.

The issue now is not even a database issue. I'm sure he doesn't have that much content indexed yet but why is the search so slow?. As if he is crawling on demand and the script kind of timeout in between.

^^^Arguing over this is not the solution, Even doe the OP is learning a lot from it. If he is willing to make it an Open source He can put it on GitHub and let do more coding than talking. Debating on which technology to use am cool with anyone. but for the indexing C++ or JAVA should be used.
If he can make it a Nigerian / Nairaland project I will commit for free when am less busy.I hope other programmers are willing to do the same.
If it take 4 Years or more I think it worth it.

Funny as it may seem, if you ask me to test a search engine - the first thing i need to ascertain is - if it can find goat and cows first - then we can talk business.
In order words - a search engine that cannot find a missing goat is not qualified (or even quantified for that matter) to be called a search engine - as far as i am concerned.

I know that sachng.com is not actually getting the some more complex search terms, but it is not as bad as you are describing it.

I have both a mobile app (a multinational one used in various countries), and more than one website that fall into those categories.

Err, with a little exaggeration on my part (as usual). It is not as bad as I say jare, i think it is because i cannot find my missing goat that i am beefing the sach engine.

But as an aside, i really want to commend you on doing something fantastic as this. Keep up the good work. Many years ago, i embarked on a similar project to this one with basic php/mysql.
Right now, the app is doing well and marketers are on my neck, but the thing don slow pass this your sach engine, i really need to find time to optimize, but time has been a serious problem for me. when i started it then, this was how people were laffing at me on nairaland - but i still went on to complete the stuff - took me like 4 years to perfect (since i was working alone off-and-on).
It is a search engine too - but on the surface, i gave it another name. And no, it cannot sach for goats - and i am not sharing the url yet - not until i optimize and make it hit the market (make boys no go steal am).

@op, i think you should take a look at seekquarry.com and see if it can help you to improve your sach.

The script doesn't timeout, and the search is onlu slow at first. If you research that same term you see improvement in speed.

It makes me remember Samsung first galaxy phone series, imagine how it evolved to be among the best smartphone today.
Your argument is not in vain because I acquire lots of knowledge from them.
I must say that sachng.com has brought lots of new challenges to me, and am working to fix them.
