I don't know if this is the right section to post this.

I've always wondered what's so wrong in collecting/giving items, using your left hand?

If one tries to give/collect an item to/from someone (usually, older people), it gets rejected, with a stern remark... "use your right hand".

What's the big deal? A hand is a hand. If the left hand is so "bad", why not cut it off?

Or, is there more to it?

Psst...it means nothing. But the fact that it is unpleasant to people around you should make you use your right. I'm ambidextrous, because I didn't have a choice but learn to use my right as effectively as my left.

I'm sure it has any side effect or anything bad just that it's a norm, a norm we grew up to know like many other dogmas

Most people are born right handed. Only the greatest overcome it.

You have heard about culture, right?

Well,Incase you haven't, culture is the peoples way of life.In our country especially in Igbo land,using your left hand to give something to an elder is a sign of disrespect.

Just like killing of a cow is an atrocity in some parts of India but shey cow na animal wey we suppose dey kill,eat their meat?

That's culture for you.

Really no big deal.....just cos of our traditional beliefs. Overtime,this will be wiped away with so many other unnecessary beliefs in our society.
This just reminds of the hell of beatings I got cos I was born a leftie........I now use more of my right hand but u don't need a second glance to know that Bammy is a leftie......

Its part of culture and thus makes it socially acceptable.

In the US,tipping is the acceptable culture.
Of course it sounded weird that I was expected to tip and was frowned on, for not tipping.

I mean,c'mon its my money and besides,you're paid for your job , so why must I tip you?.

Culture differs around the world. From my undergrad days, I've known that there are different traditional practices.

1.. Harmful cultural practices.
2..Neutral cultural practices
3.. Harmless cultural practices.

Right hand preference is a very neutral practice. It can even make south paws become ambidextrous ..

You don't go throwing cultural practice away simply because you've travelled abroad.it is what makes us WE.

We must only discard the harmful ones..
